Sussex v Middlesex LIVE
This live event has finished
- Sussex were bowled out for 229 in their first innings
- Ed Joyce top scored with 101
- Middlesex resume on 445-5 on day three
- Sam Robson top scored with 166
Ok. That's it for me today. Thought I'd be writing about Sussex's first defeat of the season by this point but Wright has at least given them an outside chance of getting something out of this game. Report now at http://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/10561354.Wright_century_gives_Sussex_hope/
Reaction and pictures in The Argus tomorrow. Unfortunately I'm not here tomorrow to see if they can pull it off but I'll be back on Sunday for the t20 v Essex
Great stuff from Luke Wright. Probably going to be in vain but at least he's restored some pride. He finishes on 151, Jordan is on 1 and Sussex are 288-6 - leading by 21. If Sussex can bat all until midway through the afternoon session tomorrow they have a chance. It's a tall order but at least they're still in there fighting
150 for Luke Wright off 165 balls. 20x4, 1x6
Wright has no intention of shutting up shop for the close of play as he launches Dexter down the ground for 6 to move to 149
Time for Chris Jordan to show what he can do with the bat. Robbo really rates him but hasn't really shown too much yet this season. Had a miserable time with the ball in this game but maybe he's still going to have some say in the outcome. 3 overs to go. 275-6
4 overs to go. Lead is 7 now. Don't want to get too optimistic but if Sussex could get a lead of 150 then who knows? Long way to go I know and probably wouldn't be enough but trying to find the positives
Sussex go into the lead so Middlesex will have to bat again. Jordan almost run himself out there with a suicidal piece of running

Needed to show this resistance in the first inning. Bit futile now.
They're going to change the ball after 73 overs. Seems odd
Brown goes for 38. Flashed at a wide one from Berg and Voges takes a sharp chance at first slip. Partnership of 107 but he really needed to stay there. Jordan comes in and he's the final hope really with Mags, Anyon and Monty to follow. Sussex 262 so still need another 5 to make Middlesex bat again. If another wicket goes now we could have an extra half an hour
9 oves to go today. Sussex badly need to get through to the close without further loss if they are to stand any chance in this game. Still need another 26 runs just to make Middlesex bat again
Ouch! Ben Brown takes one in the place where it hurts most from Steven Finn. Got to give Brown his dues. He's been a bit out of touch with the bat recently but has really dug in well here. Put on 83 so far with Wright. Brown 24, Wright 119. Sussex 238-5
15 overs to go today. It's looking like Sussex might take the game into tomorrow after all. Hope I'm not speaking too soon. Double Nelson now 222-5
Luke Wright brings up his century with a lovely cover drive for four off Collymore. 127 balls with 20 fours so he's not hung around either. Middlesex must hate the sight of him after his exploits at Lord's last month! Sussex 217-5
Luke WRight on 99
59 partnership between Wright and Brown. Wright on 93, Brown 17. Sussex 205-5
Here we go again after tea. Can Sussex take this into a 4th day. Need Wright to stay there and Brown or Jordan to give him some support
Well, it could have been worse. There was a danger Sussex wouldn't even make it to tea when they lost 3wkts in 10 balls just after lunch. But from 45-4 they have recovered slightly to 172-5 now, thanks largely to Luke Wright who is still there on 67.
DROP. Although that might be a tad harsh on Sam Robson to call it a drop. Brown fended a short ball off from Finn and it hit Robson at short leg
Finn's back on too
Don't want to do Sussex a disservice but I think Joyce's departure raises the prospect that this will not go into a 4th day. Brown has been out of form with the bat recently and CJ has not really produced much this season apart from one good innings. After that we're into the tailenders. 35 overs still to go. Could take the extra half hour too if needed. 158-5
Dexter brings himself on and takes a wicket 1st ball. Joyce gets a little nick to the keeper to fall for 47. I'm afraid that might be game, set and match. Sussex 155-5
100 partnership between Joyce and Wright. Really good effort but they need to make it a double hundred stand to give Sussex a fighting chance in this game. 146-4, trailing by 121
Wright brings up his half century with a 4 off Berg. He obviously likes playing against Middlesex having made half century and century at Lord's. Gets lucky next ball though as he's dropped by Robson in the slips

Sorry, Scrote, you're outvoted on this one. Sussex have been dire in the one-day format this season so the Championship has been their only saving grace ... until this game that is.
If you actually include the T20 game, Middlesex have outplayed us for four days in a row – and by some distance.
With the exception of Joyce, the batsmen have lacked application and Monty's five wickets came when the game was over as a contest.
Nash should have been pushing for an England place by now but gives his wicket away time and again after getting a start. Wells isn't faring too well as an opener and RHB has hardly been the second coming. Time for him to make way for Machan.
Okay, so according to Steve the wicket gave the bowlers some assistance on day one, but Sussex should still have made 300-plus. Not good enough, I'm afraid.
2:43pm Fri 19 Jul 13
The halcyon days of early summer now seem a distant memory. The 20-20 and 50 over tournament are already over for Sussex and now an embarassing hiding coming up in the Championship. Its time for Mr Robinson to shake up his currently underperforming team. Unfortunately he does not seem to have too much depth in the quality of his fringe players.
100 up for Sussex as Joyce drives Murtagh for 4. Also the 50 partnership between Joyce and Wright. Only need another 200 from this pair to give Sussex a chance! 101-4
Bad news. He was only changing his socks and is back on to bowl
Good news. Finn's off the pitch now so at least he can't bowl for a while
Drinks and Sussex have steadied the ship somewhat at 88-4.
The one player who I would say didn't deserve his place in the team for this game on his form this season was Monty - and he went and took a five-for!

You reckon Jordan should be dropped even though he's the leading wicket taker this season? Anyon is in the top 10 wicket takers. Nash is averaging just abuot 40, Wells ditto, Yardy at 45. Yeah, lets drop players! IT IS ONE MATCH SINCE WE ANNIHILATED SOMERSET.
Right, I'm off for the weekend - too much nonsense on here. Have a nice time Steve H - you are exempt from rants :-)
Haven't won any games at Hove in any format all season. Some pitches have been relaid and Robbo was moaning the wicket didn't play how they expected in this game.
2:38pm Fri 19 Jul 13
Am I right in thinking we have not won any championship matches at Hove, this season, same for T20. Why is is we cannot win at Hove,is it a different pitch this season?
DROP. First slice of luck for Sussex as Rayner fails to cling on to a difficult chance at 2nd slip. Would have been another wicket for Finn. Joyce is the relieved man as he got an edge attempting an ambitious cut. 68-4
Can't argue that Sussex have been dreadful. Bowled poorly apart from Magoffin yesterday and with the exception of Joyce have batted poorly in both innings. Not too great in the field either so not many positives. This was a game they had been targeting to win along with the next home one against Derbyshire. Still very much in with a shout of the title but will have to improve hugely and it's going to be much harder now.
2:29pm Fri 19 Jul 13
We've been truly dreadful in this match. It's very difficult to believe that we started this match at the top of the table. We are going to get a much lower score than our first innings 229 this time round. Middlesex are a totally different class to us - they will get 24 points to our 2 and that's about how many times better than us they've been. Look at their innings - opener gets 166, all their top 7 get runs, all of their top 7 had a strike rate of over 50 and all of their first 6 partnerships were at least 50. Look at out feeble efforts - Nash 40 and 0, Wells 15 and 19, Yardy 0 and 18, RHB 16 and 1. Pitiful. Robbo implied we were going to fight hard today (Argus this morning) but this is an abject surrender. And why, having scored a century in the last Championship match, is Machan not playing instead of either Wells (who hasn't scored any runs for an age) or RHB (who is a major disappointment). What sort of selection policy is that? I assume that there will be some changes after this debacle because our batting, bowling and fielding have all been dreadful and other than Joyce, Magoffin and Monty (eventually) all the other 8 could justifiably be dropped. Nothing at all wrong with losing a match obviously but we have just been so bad especially for a team who were at the top of the table. We're now down to second, their are 4 other teams in touching distance, we've played more games than everybody else and we have a very tough last 4 games. I had expected us to win this match and that would have left us genuinely well placed.

Old Scrote of the Amex says
It's just a bad game. Reality check.
Brings up the 50 too for Sussex. Now 63-1 so only 204 behind!
Four 4s for Wright in this over from Finn. Three lovely shots and one thick edge which went between 3rd slip and gully. Ruining Finn's figures who was 2-2 from 3 before this over
2:12pm Fri 19 Jul 13
Unfortunately this is all becoming very predictable. Hats off to Middlesex really up for it,sad we can't say same for fragile Sussex batting again. Can Wright get his head down now with Joyce.
Oh dear. This is looking like a procession here. RHB goes for 1. Finn picks up his 2nd wicket with his 7th ball. Caught low down by Voges at 1st slip. Sussex 45-4 having been 42-1
Middlesex pick up there 2nd wicket in 5 balls as Collymore has Yardy caught behind for 8. Not a good game for Yardy who went for a golden duck in the first innings. Sussex in deep trouble yet again at 44-3. Got a feeling this could be all over today.
Finn strikes with his fourth ball of the match. Wells is caught at 2nd slip by Rayner for 19. Said it was going to be a crucial period now the England man is on and that appears to be the case. Seems he's keen to prove a point rather than disillusioned. 42-2
Finn into the attack now. Not sure why it's taken so long but we'll see what frame of mind he is in - keen to prove a point or a bit disillusioned. Sussex 41-1
Here come the players after lunch. Expect to see Finn come into the attack pretty soon. Not sure why he hasn't bowled yet. He'll want to impress the watching Ashley Giles
Sussex get through to lunch without any further loss on 31-1. Nash was the wicket to fall for a duck. No sign of Finn bowling yet but his replacement at Lord's has taken a wicket for England before lunch. Long, long way to go for Sussex in this match.
Berg into the attack now for Middlesex. Finn is obviously 4th choice seamer for this match. 30-1
Nash goes for a duck. Not happy with the decision. Stands there for ages but he's got to go. Looked to have gloved one from Murtagh to 1st slip but the fact he didn't walk suggests he thought it hit his arm. Not the start Sussex wanted 11-1
Be interesting to see how Sussex approach things here. Obviously got to bat for at least 4 sessions to save this game but you need to be positive on this pitch. Collymore to open at sea end so Finn has to wait
Nash and Wells at the crease. Need at least two big partnerships to save this game so it would be good to start with the opening pair. Murtagh opens bowling down the hill
Those figures for Monty do flatter him a little bit. Mopped up the tail while Berg was caught on the boundary trying to up the tempo. Hopefully will give him a bit of a spring in his step
11:30am Fri 19 Jul 13
Old Scrote of the Amex says
So Monty would've possibly had 3 for 80ish if Joyce hadn't dropped the catch yesterday. Not too shabby for someone apparently out of form.
Monty's figures this morning were 4-16 from 6.4 overs. Will have impressed Mr Giles
All out in fact. Sussex finish things off pretty efficiently this morning. Shame all the damage had already been done. Monty mopped up the tail to finish with 5-95 while Jordan also got a solitary wicket this morning for his efforts. Middx will be disappointed not to get to 500 but 496 all out still gives them a lead of 267. They've also got 45 minutes to bowl at Sussex before lunch now too.
Monty does a little jig of delight as he gets his second wicket of the match. Berg didn't quite get hold of an off drive and is caught on the boundary by Magoffin having made 39. Rayner the new man. Middlesex 476-6
Simpson (who was dropped on 24 yesterday) brings up his half century by driving Magoffin through the covers for 4. Took him 99 balls
11:09am Fri 19 Jul 13
Not lost yet - c'mon G.O.S-b-t-S!
Jordan didn't get long this morning. Replaced by Monty at the sea end. 451-5
10:57am Fri 19 Jul 13
Old Scrote of the Amex says
We'll just have to chalk this one down to experience. Every other team has lost a game so it's probably our turn - we're still doing well in the Championship. #sanguine
Jordan to open the bowling from the sea end. Simpson facing on 39, Berg on 26
England limited overs coach Ashley Giles is here today. Wonder who he is taking a look at? Obviously will be running the rule over Steven Finn as part of his role as one of the Test selectors. Monty too I suppose but don't think he'll like what he sees at the moment. Luke Wright for the one-day stuff and Chris Jordan too
It's another glorious morning at Hove but things are not looking quite so bright for Sussex I'm afraid. Middlesex will resume 216 ahead today on 445-5 and will be hoping to take that lead to about 350 by lunch before having a go at the Sussex batting. They've got Steven Finn to help their cause too so things aren't looking too optimistic. You never know though.....
