England ask Sussex about guest player
Sussex have been asked by England if they would potentially field a guest player in their three-day game against Australia.
Kevin Pietersen is a doubt for the third Test at Old Trafford due to a calf strain and England selectors may want to give a potential replacement such as Nottinghamshire’s James Taylor match-time as the game at Hove from Friday is the only first-class cricket between now and the resumption of the series on August 1.
Sussex coach Mark Robinson confirmed: “They have asked us whether we would want anybody to play but we haven’t had anyone given to us.
“It would not necessarily be a batsman, it could be a bowler. England are doing their duty to make sure they have options if they need them.
“It was not unexpected and you try to help where you can.”
In-form Taylor, 23, has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Pietersen while bowlers Steven Finn and Graham Onions were not selected for the 347-run win at Lord’s, although Finn returned to club duty for Middlesex in the win over Sussex.
