Hughes has not given up on winning Ashes
Phil Hughes insists Australia can still win the Ashes after the tourists’ batsmen rebuilt their battered confidence at Hove yesterday.
Hughes made 84 while Steve Smith is unbeaten on 98 as Australia reached 354-5 at the close on the opening day of their three-day match against Sussex.
Australia trail England 2-0 in the Ashes after being thrashed at Lord’s last week but Hughes said: “We’re disappointed to be 2-0 down but it is about what’s in front of us now. There is still three Test matches to play and I’m sure we can turn it around.
“That is our main focus now. Doing well in this game and then going into the next Test match and putting things right.”
Hughes was out for just one in both innings at Lord’s and hopes he has done enough to keep his place despite falling 16 short of a century.
He added: “It was good to get a few but it would have been nicer to get three figures and maybe a few more too. “The last Test match didn’t go to plan but that is just one game but I am feeling at the crease at the moment and hopefully I will be in the side for Old Trafford.”
