Sussex’s match against Australia ended in an inevitable tour after James Taylor completed his century on debut in the morning.

The Nottinghamshire batsman, who was guesting for Sussex, celebrated his recall to the England squad for the third Test at Old Trafford by making an unbeaten 121.

His painstaking five and a half hour innings helped Sussex reach 368-7 from their 100 overs to give them a lead of two after the first innings.

Australia went on to make 152-2 in their second innings with Ed Cowan scoring 77 not before the teams shook hands at 5.20pm with 16 overs still to go.

Taylor had resumed on 64 and continued to play in the same dogged manner he had adopted on Saturday.

He needed a slice of luck when he was dropped – on 90 - by Ashton Agar after skying a catch to mid-on off the bowling of the unfortunate Nathan Lyon.

Taylor went on to bring up his 16th first class century by driving Lyon for four through the covers, his hundred taking 233 balls with 11 fours.

He put on 82 with Chris Jordan who fell three short of his half century when Mitchell Starc nipped one back through the gate to knock out his leg stump.

Callum Jackson made 26 on his first class debut before becoming Lyon’s first victim of the match when he was lbw the ball after lofting him for six down the ground.

Australia lost Usman Khawaja early in their reply when the left-hander – promoted to open the innings – edged Lewis Hatchett to Jordan at first slip having made just one.

Hughes survived a couple of dodgy moments to make his second half century of the game having survived a big lbw shout from Hatchett when he had yet to score and then being hit on the helmet by a Jordan bouncer.

Hatchett – who took 2-28 - did get his man for the second time in the match when he trapped him lbw having added 38 to his first innings 84.

Cowan looked a lot more solid at the other end as he completed his second half century in the match, although it is unlikely to boost his chances of a Test recall.

Monty Panesar was unable to celebrate his England recall, however, as he went wicketless with 0-40 from his 14 overs.
