Sussex batsman set for England Lions debut
Luke Wells insists he will not get carried away after being called up to play for England Lions for the first time.
The Sussex batsman is one of three debutants – along with Warwickshire fast bowler Keith Barker and Yorkshire batsman Alex Lees – who will feature in a two-day game against Australia at Northampton next week.
The 22-year-old from Eastbourne has previously played for England under-19s and was part of a development tour to Sri Lanka in the winter of 2011 and a good performance against the Aussies would enhance his prospects of further international recognition in the future.
Wells said: “I didn’t even know there was a game coming up so it was a bit of a surprise when I got the call.
“I try not to think about that sort of thing as I have been guilty of looking too far ahead before in my career.
“It’s a nice boost to get called up and I’ll go there and enjoy the game but I won’t get carried away. I’ll try to take the opportunity and if I get a big score you never know where that can take you but my main focus is to continue scoring runs for Sussex.”
Sussex play Netherlands in the YB40 today (4.40pm) attempting to record their first win at Hove for more than a year.
