Wright stakes claim for England one-day recall
Luke Wright has been tipped for an England one-day recall after blasting Sussex to victory at Worcestershire in the YB40 yesterday.
The all-rounder smashed 112 from just 69 balls in a partnership of 184 with Matt Machan as the Sharks cruised to a seven-wicket win with more than ten overs to spare at New Road.
It was his fourth century in his last nine innings, including a brilliant unbeaten 143 for England Lions against Bangladesh, and ensured Sussex sealed a fourth straight win in the competition to finish third in Group A.
Wright is part of the England squad for the t20 series against Australia, which begins on Thursday, but has not played a ODI for two and a half years.
Sussex coach Mark Robinson said: “Luke has been in outstanding form and you have got to think he is close to getting another chance with England in the one-day format.
“He can bat anywhere in the order, is an excellent fielder and can bowl as well so I would be surprised if he is not pushing for a place.”
Wright will miss Sussex’s Championship clash with Warwickshire at Edbagston, which starts tomorrow, due to his England commitments. Any recall to the ODI squad would also rule him out of the Championship games against title rivals Durham and Yorkshire.
Meanwhile, Robinson has confirmed that wicketkeeper Matt Prior will not be available to play at Edgbaston tomorrow after helping England clinch the Ashes. Warwickshire will also be without Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott and Chris Woakes – who all played in the final Ashes Test at The Oval – along with Boyd Rankin who is in the t20 squad along with Wright.
