Albion captain Gordon Greer is on course for his first senior Scotland cap – seven years after he last played for his country.

In-form Greer has not represented Scotland since the second of two B international appearances in 2006.

That is about to change under Gordon Strachan, former Albion manager Mark McGhee has revealed.

Greer, 32, has been involved in recent Scotland squads without getting any game time.

Strachan went with Blackburn’s Grant Hanley and Norwich’s Brighton-born ex-Albion youth prospect Russell Martin for the World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and Macedonia last month.

Scotland cannot reach next summer’s finals in Brazil and McGhee, Strachan’s assistant, says Greer’s turn will come in the build-up to Euro 2016 in France.

McGhee told The Argus: “Every time we see him he does well. He is never embarrassed. When he came into the squad he trained well.

“He was good around the camp and he certainly endeared himself to everybody on our side. I kind of mooted that he may have been given a chance against Macedonia, but we eventually came to the conclusion it wasn’t a game where we particularly wanted to change it for the sake of changing it.

“The two that were playing had been doing really well, but we know we have got to find out about Gordon. The day will come when either of the two in possession at the moment are injured or suspended. Then we need to know who we can trust to put in.

“I think we felt the friendly games coming up will be the games when we best give him that opportunity. The Macedonia game was really important for us to try to win and we didn’t want to put too much pressure on Gordon in that game.”

Greer leads Albion out again at Ipswich tomorrow with the defence bidding for a fifth clean sheet in seven matches.
