Virgo calls it quits

The Argus: Adam Virgo Adam Virgo

Adam Virgo has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 30.

The former Albion defender has been forced to hang up his boots due to knee damage.

Virgo knew the game was up after playing in a pre-season friendly for Crawley.

Talking exclusively inside tomorrow's Argus, he said: "I went up for a header and when I landed the pain was just excruciating."

Virgo speaks in an in-depth interview with The Argus about his injury woes, the moment he was told he was going to Celtic and the best and worst moments of his career.

I can't believe he's still only 30. Seems to be around the game for a long time.

A good, honest trier.

Thank you Adam for the late goal against Swindon in the play-off semi in 2003! That is one of the great Withdean moments, not least because we really didn't deserve to win that game!

Agreed, and the winner at Coventry, playing as a lone striker, Micky Adams was managing Coventry at the time, watched the game in the Eclipse, great night.

Good pro who made the best of his ability. Club did really well to get reported 1.5 Million for him and shame it did not work out. Good luck for the future.

I was soaked, miserable and wishing the whistle would blow so I could go home, then Virgo, then Penalty kicks, then an immovable grin for the rest of the week.
But it was 2004.

Agreed Duncan. Adam was and is BHA through and though. He has always been an ambassador for the club - might it be that his most valuable contributions or BHA are still ahead?

I agree with all the above posts and also thank Adam for his contributions. A good honest pro.

Regarding the posts I've quoted here, Adam stated on the Albion Roar that he has some sort of involvement with the forthcoming youth academy so he is already back on board.

No doubt we'll also keep seeing him in the media - he's in the SKY studios for tomorrow's match for example.
