Gordon Strachan handed Albion’s captain his Scotland debut last night – and insisted it would not be a one-off.

Seagulls centre-back Gordon Greer played the full 90 minutes of the 0-0 draw at home to the USA at Hampden Park last night alongside Blackburn powerhouse Grant Hanley.

He took the place of Brighton-born Russell Martin as boss Strachan assessed his options ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Greer played his part on a busy international night for current Albion players.

Craig Conway also started for the Scots while left-backs Stephen Ward and Vitalijs Makismenko went up against each other in Dublin as the Republic of Ireland hosted Latvia.

Hanley and Martin have impressed as the first-choice defensive pairing during Scotland’s recent upturn in fortunes.

But Strachan has hailed Greer’s contribution to the Scotland squad at recent get-togethers. And he said the 32-year-old could expect more game time.

Speaking to the BBC’s Sportsound ahead of kick-off last night, Strachan revealed: “I promised Gordon Greer this chance. If he deserves it, we need to find out.

"But it’s not a one-off game. You don’t judge somebody on one game, that’s for sure.

“He has done fantastic in training. He has added to the squad and he has helped the victories previously with his enthusiasm and what he does for the team.”

Asked why he did not give top duo Hanley and Martin another match together, Strachan replied: “We know that’s good, that’s fine.

“We need to find out if there is anybody better out there or will they be needed if one of these two lads get injured."

Strachan expects to make changes for the game in Norway on Tuesday.
