Bridcutt set for starting role

The Argus: Liam Bridcutt is set to start against Barnsley tonight Liam Bridcutt is set to start against Barnsley tonight

Liam Bridcutt is poised for his first home start since May for Albion against Barnsley tonight.

The defensive midfielder, player of the season twice in a row, has not started a home game since the Seagulls lost to Crystal Palace in the play-offs.

Hernia surgery and a recurrence of a pubic bone injury have restricted Bridcutt to one full appearance since then, in Albion’s opening day defeat at Leeds.

The influential Scotland international made his comeback midway through the second half of the last home outing against Blackburn and was given further game time in the draw at Bournemouth in place of Jake Forster-Caskey.

Team-mate Stephen Ward said: “Liam came on at half-time on Saturday and I thought he was outstanding. He made us tick and got on the ball.”

Fantastic news - it will be great to have him back and making midfield tick. I really think he and Ince will work well together.

Coming together nicely, Buckley hopefully, need some width, Andrews on the bench. Can't wait for tonight haven't seen them since the Watford game.

Well if lIam does come back to the starting line up, I wonder how the rest will line up? Not sure I like Ince any further forward, where there are perhaps better options available ( I know he gives a physical presence and has played very well but…) This is the sort of game you would expect us to win. It's also the sort of game that could bite us on the bum. If however, we have any serious intentions regarding out stated ambition, then a win it is. I am looking forward to seeing how OG deals with this evenings little conundrum. As we all know, all games in this league are difficult. Barnsley come here in managerial limbo and barring any major surprises, they will be looking to steady the ship and perhaps park the bus. My main concern is our lack of punch. This is not solely down to injuries and is more a symptom of how we play sometimes. I would like to see us go for the throat, rip it out and watch the life slowly drain from the twitching carcass. Over to you OG.

Not sure how the Argus knows that Bridcutt is starting tonight but if this report is correct, the question is, will Oscar start both Bridders and Ince, I don't think he will.
The back five plus Bridcutt should be good enough to ensure that we don't lose this match, so the remaining five players have to be those that can win the match. One wide player will start for us, probably Conway and Barnes and Crofts probably will too, they are scoring goals so why not. Two places left to fill, has Ince staked a claim for one of those spots, possibly but if Buckley is fit Oscar might go with two wide players and that could point to JFC starting.
No game is easy, we know that, but we are at home to a team that we should beat and that might give Orlandi a chance for much needed playing time, again making it harder to start Ince. There are plenty of matches coming up, Ince will be back if he stands down today. His strength and height might well be needed when we take on Leicester, this could be the match for both Bridders and Ince to start.

With Ince forced off with cramp at Bournemouth and 3 games in 7 days, I cant see him starting today tbh .Its going to be an interesting team selection today anyway . Poyet put the Senior players strait back in after injury but Oscar seems to put more emphasis on match fitness so we could see some more changes, perhaps Crofts also if he is still carrying an injury

Any chance, I wonder, of both Barnes and Lita being in the starting lineup tonight? Lita must be chomping at the bit to get a game.

I doubt it will happen as (a) it would be a dramatic change of tactics by OG and (b) there would be no recognised striker on the bench and it's nice to have Leroy in reserve in case things go pearshaped.

Hope we go at Barnsley from the start.

If by chance it did happen, I guess Lita would be up front and Barnes behind, maybe a rehearsal for Ulloa and Barnes. Perhaps something for the last 30 minutes after, and if, we are 2 goals up, in those circumstances I'd try it.

Just got back and not happy. Good to see Bridders back but their goals came straight through the middle as we were far too deep. We gave them no respect and got punished for it. Barnsley are not a rubbish side and it was alwsys going to be hard with buttland. We need to field a team with intent and have buckers on from the start and Ince instead of Bridders for now. Lita up front please and midfield need to support and get well forward. Enough said; Conway seems to be playing with some belief so come on Brighton, I don't expect you to win all the games but at least hammer the bottom of the league side at home. I am looking for an improvement for Leicester and will be cheering away as usual but the Barnsley game may bite us in the butt.

Agreed been saying it since the Bournemouth game, had to go for it tonight with two up front and Buckley out wide, looks like he picked up another injury tonight, such a lightweight in the tackle. Poor tactics tonight from OG and Jones, left chasing the game when the right line up would have won the game. At half time we should have made three substitutions, Buckley,Lita and Ince, very poor Brighton all the momentum gone.

Completely unadventurous line up for the kick off for at home against the bottom team with the worst goal difference led to a dreadful first hour performance with 3 shots on and off target. The continued bad performances, midweek, at home against bottom teams.

Lita got 11 mins of normal time - so, so little time really to properly do anything.

No Ince in the starting line up after being most people's MoM t Bournemouth and clearly someone we could have done with.

barnsley didn't "park the bus" but came to play and brought more passion and vigour to the first hour than we did. Such a shame we didn't go for them.

Kemy at least brought some incisive on the turf passing once on and Buckley initially livened up events and could and should perhaps have had two.

Both their goals really should have been stopped by Kuzscak - abject defending especially for the first.

A bad day at the office but compounded by the lack of willingness to really go for it at the start - against the bottom team - at home. I don't get it

3 good saves by Buttland.

Good games for Ward (as so often) and Conway where most who were on the pitch for the whole match wouldn't score more than a 5/ 10

2 shots on and off target by half time!! Yes, "TWO" - sums it up and so much of what we are lacking in the last third

What a joke! worst ever game at the Amex, booed off at half time and rightly so, where was Ince, on the bench while Lopez done his invisibility act again! No one on the right for Bruno to work with until Buckley came on and why the hell no start for Lita again! We were 2-1 down with 15 minutes to go and we take off Barnes for Lita, should have been a defender off and left the 2 strikers on and gone for it. To much negative passing and as good as Bridcutt is I think he needs to be blended back into the side, tonight we lost all cohesion as a team and couldn't get it back. Jfc ineffective, Lopez invisible, Crofts grafted as did Barnes, Conway was quiet first half but improved second half once play was stretched due to Buckley being on. Oscar needs to put a rocket up them before Saturday, play like that against Leicester and we will get stuffed. Sore throat from tonight but will be back for more Saturday. UTA

O/t, but did people notice the 1/2 season ticket offer posters today? I haven't worked out how these compare to a full season ticket but heard a few disgruntled full season ticket holders on the train afterwards. Think this is quite a risky policy by BHAFC as can see a few full season ticket holders opting for this option next year. Futhermore games like tonight were already subject to some discount offers.

Gonna have to start spending if we are to progress any further up the leagues. Barnsley outplayed us in the passing department. Apart from Bridcutt, the rest of the midfield looked very average. Barnes was running around at the front with little support. The lack of pace and movement was quite obvious in most departments. In the first fifteen minutes or so, Barnsley stood off and gave the Albion much space and time on the ball - this is when the pace should have been stepped up. The substitutions should have happened much earlier, or the team should have changed formation as it was obvious the tactics weren't working.

Just home from the game and feeling pretty dejected right now. I think the fact that we've dropped 5 points at home to the teams sat bottom of our division says it all.

OG had a stinker tonight... Really did get things wrong. JFC had the worst I've seen from him. I didn't realise Lopez was on the pitch until he got substituted and Barnes had a bit of a shocker.

For the 1st 60 minutes tonight we were awful.. What do you expect though when you start a games with no pace, flair or creativity in the team.
It was certainly no surprise to me that we looked better when Buckley started the second half... The second goal a big blow though.
I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it but I thought the turning point arrived at the hour mark when Kemy was introduced. All of a sudden we had a bit of urgency and creativity in the team. Add to that a bit of pace on the flank and we looked a completely different team.
The subs also seemed to rejuvenate our left side with both Ward and Conway looking a threat.

Really didn't get the Lita substitution.. He looked surprisingly sharp when he came on yet got only 10 minutes at best.
Don't get me wrong, Barnes has grown on me but there was no hiding his shocker tonight and IMHO Leroy should have been on a good 20 minutes earlier.

I'm afraid that for me it was OG that got things terribly wrong this evening.
I really hope that tonight was a wake up call for our management team... Play the best players and we've a good chance of winning... It really isn't rocket science.

Sorry to be miserable tonight but I'm really disappointed by tonight's events and I like many others don't like to see such a poor showing.

A quick big up to one of the Barnsley players. I thought that Paddy McCourt was the best player on the pitch and completely ran the show.

Here's hoping for a better showing on Saturday... A missed opportunity tonight

I'm sure I will be ticked down for this but I believe that if a good offer is made for Bridcutt in January we should accept it. The squad have shown in his absence that they can go to the likes of QPR and put in a good defensive performance. £5m + could get us an option we're lacking or improve the position re FFP.

There are some results that make you just wonder, how the hell did that happen. I have no idea how the lads played, other than the reporting of those that were there, but what ever the reports, this is a bad result.

There were three other, 'what the hell happened,' results today, Ipswich, Yeovil and Sheffield Wednesday, I reckon there other three sets of fans are asking the same questions we are asking. Last Saturday there were two more, Watford and QPR both got beat by teams that you would not have expected to win.

This is the Championship, crap happens and it will continue to happen. Oscar, Jones and the squad must learn from our last two matches, evaluate the good and the bad and make decisions that will make a difference. Our season won't be defined by today's result.

Ringtoneyears, you really need to grow up.

Just got back and not happy. Good to see Bridders back but their goals came straight through the middle as we were far too deep. We gave them no respect and got punished for it.
UTA
Agree about Lopez & Caskey, the latter substituted at half time in the last two games, that should tell OG something. Barnes tonight was isolated and shouldn't be on his own against the bottom of the table side, Lita must wonder what he has to do to get some decent time on the pitch.

Couldn't put it better myself . First half utter rubbish as so many have been this season. Chap who sits in front of me summed it up at half time'if we cannot come back from this and show required desire ,forget play offs . Mid table mediocrity beckcons' am afraid he has it spot on.
Why after almost half a season can we not start a home game at least,up tempo and at them,am sure an early goal would have finished them.
Also many fans stood and applauded their goals which were excellent ,which should have fired our players but didn't.
In summary this result was coming all season at hm.

Inept performance tonight. Bruno, Greer, Bridcutt, Forster-Caskey, esp. Lopez, Barnes, Kuszak all need to reflect on their performances and ask themselves, was it good enough. Garcia needs to reflect on his team selection and reflect on whether it was good enough.

An absolute joke in terms of the team and the performance.

I am glad they did not salvage a point as the team got what they deserved, beaten and booed!!

OMG, that was very poor. Where to start? Just generally we were very poor in all departments. Even Mr Dependable TK (who has been more responsible for our clean sheets and points this season than the defence) had a poor game. It is hard to highlight any positives. Perhaps Augestein could be a good championship midfielder if he can get fit and stay fit. He seems to have some skill on the ball and an eye for a pass. Bridcutt did fairly well in his customary role, leaping like a salmon claiming balls in the air you wouldn't expect him to have a right to (he probably shouldn't try passing more than 10 yards though, that's not his role - Vicente any one?).

Unfortunately the honeymoon for Spanish flair looks over. I was a fan of Lopez but can no longer see how he justifies a starting place. He looks unfit and so shot of confidence. Surely Lita could offer more even slightly out of position? Bruno is often caught napping away from right back and made some very surprising passes today including one from the attacking third which went out into touch near our own corner flag, and his cross into the crowd on 88 minutes when we were crying out for pressure in their box summed up Brighton's night.

I hope OG does make some changes as despite the decent run of results we haven't actually been playing that well and our league position has been a bit flattering. Whereas last season I think we did frequently play well only to throw away points the opposite seems to be the case this season where I can't really claim that we've been unlucky. After 30 minutes today my son sitting next to me said Barnsley were the better side, and he was right. I didn't think it would last but unfortunately they were and it did for the majority of the game. Both their goals were superbly well worked and made our defence look very average.

What an absolutely inept performance that was. Where was the passion? We were out played, out fought in the first half and that McCourt fella was a class above everyone else. The first goal was a classic and I had to applaud it. Yes we improved slightly in the second half, but why do we keep having to play catch up in the second half of our games? The Spanish contingent must be colour blind, as they seemed to be passing it to the wrong payers. Maybe it is a reality check for those who thought we'd be in the play off positions tonight. The atmosphere was bloody awful and this rebounds on the players. And for the record, I don't think Ulloa need worry about his place after tonight!!
