Albion stun the leaders

The Argus: Craig Conway sets Albion on their way (photos Simon Dack) Craig Conway sets Albion on their way (photos Simon Dack)

Ashley Barnes scored a goal in each half as fired-up Albion beat the Championship leaders.

Craig Conway was also on target and David Lopez played a starring role in two goals as the Seagulls defeated Leicester City 3-1 on a pulsating afternoon at The Amex.

It was a perfect way for the Seagulls to bounce back from the shock midweek defeat by Barnsley.

And a result made all the more impressive by the loss to injury of Tomasz Kuszczak in the warm-up and Gordon Greer early in the game.

Albion went ahead with a beautifully crafted goal down their right on nine minutes.

Bruno slid the ball into the path of David, who made ground and angled a superb ball along the turf, across the defence and into the path of Barnes, who converted beyond the far post.

Leicester responded with a bight spell and Matthew Upson had to produce a potential goal-saving challenge as Jamie Vardy prepared to let fly in front of goal.

But the Seagulls broke out of defence with a terrific second goal on 29 minutes.

Again David was the creator, with a perfectly weighted and timed ball through for Conway, who chested down on to his right foot and flashed a low drive past Kasper Schmeichel.

Leicester offered plenty of glimpses as to why they have enjoyed such a strong start to the season.

They worked their way back into the game when Andy King was left unmarked at the far post to head home at a free-kick on 64 minutes.

But Albion rode out the storm, with Brezovan in assured form between the posts.

And they restored their two-goal cushion when Barnes crashed home a penalty on 77 minutes after being pushed by Wes Morgan.

Great result today. Much more positive tactics from Oscar and a deserved 3 points as a result.
There was a lot of understandable negativity on here after the Barnsley debacle but to be honest I was confident Oscar would bounce back from that criticism, learn from it and get us a result today. I think the Manager of the Month award has given him a lot of new confidence.
Ince has started to settle in nicely and gone from a liability to an asset in 3 months.
Good to see LuaLua back in action as well.

I so hope that all those that slammed Oscar for his team selection of Tuesday will now back off. Oscar can only send them out to play the match, once out there the players have to go to work, Tuesday they didn't and today they did.

Have to agree with you sussexram40. Excellent response from an Albion team who received a lot of unfair critisism from the fans in midweek. Barnes works his socks off, but still gets a load of stick. I would be very upset if that were happening to my only fit striker. Leicester look like a team in decline. Don't think they will be joining us in the premiership next season. If Brighton keep playing like this we might get to enjoy a decent derby again next year.

I have to disagree Vegas.

Surely the best managers can alter their tactics during the game.

Oscar needs to learn the lingo and he is still riding on the back of all Gus`s great work.

Actually I think the flak the lads took after Tuesday's match was fully warranted, they just didn't show up, today they responded and got the result. Oscar was the one that should not have been singled out after Tuesday's result, he did his part, the players didn't.

What you are suggesting is that a football manager has no responsibilty once the game starts.

So what you are saying is Oscar can go home.

The thing is Ringtone, Oscar didn't tell the lads to switch off for the first 45 minutes, no more than he told them to sit deep and not press higher up the field on Tuesday evening. The reports say that our second half performance was better, but that is small consolation.
The players, 'own,' Tuesday's result, they knew that and put it right today.

I agree.

It reminded me of boxing day when we beat the saints.

I feel Leciester where unlike most teams and came looking to win the game, this suits the Albion who can play on the break.

Once we acquire the ability to beat teams who park the bus, then we will go up.

Great performance
Ince and Bridders pushed up early on their midfield with excellent pressing in the middle and forward thirds, supported by the rest of the midfield, with Barnes holding well. OG did his homework and the tactics were spot on. Nice to see some urgency from the start to give us the confidence to build a cushion when we were under pressure from an accomplished side.
Brez was very good apart from one near 'moment' in the second half and Mr Albion provided great cover for the injured Greer. MOM? Barnes worked hard as usual but we seemed to have a couple of new Spanish players that whilst looking similar to the two who played on Tuesday, could not possibly have been the same players. Bruno in particular was superb but not forgetting 'Mr assist', Spanish Dave. Ince was good, very good. If the midfield can put in that first half shift every week, we will be there or thereabouts.

What a difference from Tuesday night, great tempo further up the pitch really unsettled Leicester, and we matched them physically which was my worry. Barnes worked very hard and finished well from a sublime Lopez pass, one of two he made. His best game this season by far, many questioned his inclusion today and I was one but he was back somewhere near to his best.

My m.o.m was Ince, just an outstanding display, didn't put a foot wrong today, and those who worried about him and Bridcutt together, needn't have. Gonna be hard keeping him as he improves with every game, and I think has it all, won't be long before he gets on the score sheet.

Special praise for El-abd, he was fantastic when he came on, and Brez didn't let anyone down, a solid display from him thrown in at the last minute. Just picked out a few but everyone played well today, and the Amex was back to its very loud best.

The last man of the pitch was Oscar yet again, fantastic to see him applauding the whole stadium, very refreshing from Poyet who just dived down the tunnel after every home game. Great entertainment, and a fantastic win today . UTA

Good play from all today and a gliimer of hope re Lopez. When he plays like he did today the he is deadly. Went quiet later on hence the sub with lua lua taking over. Ince composure was great; he realy thinks, does nothing stupid, looks up sees the run and makes the pass. Conways runs were great and personally I would like us to swoop and buy in Jan. Bridders put himself in the shop window today and showed he can also storm forward and get in the box. Persnally I hope he stays because there is a place for both Ince and Bridders. Lua lua looked quite good in his 15 mins; still looks sharp. Looking forward to smashing the borough away.

I'll hold my hands up and admit I was wrong - I thought that Bridcutt and Ince were competing for one place and probably couldn't play together but boy did they show me they could!

Lose to the bottom team, beat the top team. This league is always weird, and I'm loving it.

Again, an almost completely different bunch of contributors on here compared to Tuesday. I guess some people just love to moan.

At the match today and well played the albion. I would not have picked Lopez on past form but today he was good and back to his best,so well done OG.
Our tempo and possession was better today and we pressured them high up the pitch which was good.
Still don't like the continual long ball to lone striker Barnes but Lua Lua made surging runs which occupied their backs. We certainly needed that third goal and although the penalty was poorly taken, credit Barnes for taking it.
Mom for me probably Upson, very calm and dominant in the air closely followed by Ince.
Would be happy to get Wood back if we could.

Just back from the game today and have to say that "chalk & cheese" springs to mind.
The outfield starting 11 carried only 1 change from that which was so woeful on Tuesday, yet the difference in performance was remarkable.
Yes the boys stepped up to the plate today but equally I think that Ince made a massive difference to the side.
Both Rohan and Liam playing together today looked very effective, the latter even bursting in to the box at 1 point to shoot on goal.
I think the bosses need to sit our very own Viera down... IMHO a decent 5 year contract wouldn't be out of place.

Special praise for a lot of the boys today. Bruno looked good and Adam when he came on was extremely solid.
The midfield duo of Ince and Bridders looked very influential, Conway was superb (I sincerely hope he returns) and even Lopez chipped in today... Still went missing a lot of the time but credit for his vision on the two occasions he looked up and played the killer pass.
And Barnes.. What can you say about this guy... Not the most talented but what effort.. He got kicked blank and blue today yet continued to press hard, try try and then try some more. Deserved his MOM imho.

Happy fans tonight and rightly so. Good to see Kaz back too.. Looked a little of the pace but you could see his threat even whilst a bit rusty.

Finally a big up to us, the fans... Best atmosphere I've experienced for a while, it was a joy to be involved today.

Well done lads. Let's see today's efforts copied week in week out.

I stated yesterday that Liam was a ''luxury we cannot afford''. Well I retract my words and eat a big dollop of humble pie.

Liam and Ince today were magnificant and should be played together from here on in. The interchanging between the two going forward and covering the back four was exquisit.

My thoughts are that now the pair are playing together in mid-field neither of them is a ''luxery we can afford to lose.

In my book, either Liam, Ince or Bruno could have been chosen as MOM.

Play the same at M'brough and another 3 points should be in the bag.

Can't agree with the quote about Ince. From the 1st game he played he has looked good and just gets better. He has a real presence and power, something we have missed in midfield even with Bridcutt playing.

I have to say I was dubious about the outcome particularly when I saw the team with only the lightweight F-C left out. But so much better performance, one of the best I have seen from the team. They just never allowed Leicester to settle on the ball. Bruno had his best game for ages, El-Abd looked very assured in place of Greer, playing really well with Upson to his left. Ward another good game against a very tricky winger.

Lopez two assists, Barnes as hard working as ever. Conway worked really hard too and took his goal really well.

Great, great performance. Very well pleased.

Now when we got beat on Tuesday, there were a whole bunch of comments decrying the starting eleven, today, with just one outfield change, no complaints, why is that?
Ince for JFC and everyone is happy, I guess it was all JFC's fault that we didn't play well against Barnsley, or perhaps Ince is so darn good that the whole team plays better with his presence on the field.
One change, no place for Lita and no complaints that Lita didn't start, and yet so many after Tuesday's result. No one stating that David should not have started, again so many opposed his selection before the match.

Where have all the moaners gone.

Just got home, chuffed after that performance. I dined out on a small serving of humble pie, nothing too big - I'm still not convinced AB, but well played even so. Something else that occured to me is that Bridcutt may not be the target of a PL swoop in January. It is far more likely to be Rohan Ince who is showing incredible potential and, given the chance - and good guidance - will be a superstar for us. All in all and in spite of a few squeaky bum moments, great result

Interesting headline. Should be albion stun fans , worst game at amex on tuesday followed by the best(this season so far). Ince and bridders will take us far. Strange ,after today i am not manager. Lopez rediscovers from but my heart sank when i saw him on the team sheet similarly Bruno and Brezovan and yet all came though with flying colours. Good start which helped atmosphere even before the goal.
Two queries , no fast song albion build up which was missed and i wish they would stop sponsors mom by some nobody judge. Mom split today between many but Ashley not choice even though he scored two.( never comfortable when he takes penalties)
Hope for the season after all.
Another 5 mins and we may fined someone has reached their ceiling ;-).

For me, our most complete performance under Oscar - Ince AND Bridders have to start, Spanish Dave showed glimpses of why we loved him last season, including a sublime ball for the first. Bruno's best game for ages, Adam immense when he came on. Leicester are a very good side - when they brought on Knockaert, Wood and Taylor-Fletcher, I feared the worst but we weathered the storm and saw the game out. After Tuesday, I said we needed to step up - credit the management team and the players - and the fans, who got right behind the team - very satisfying afternoon.

There was every reason to critisise the team on their mid-week performance particularly as they showed today what they are really capable of,those fans who are prepared to accept the type of play produced against Barnsley only encourage management to do nothing to raise standards.

Best performance of the season.
Our spanish pair combined superbly, especially in the 1st half.
2 superb deliveries from Dave for the goals.
Brezovan played with confidence,
El Abd slotted in perfectly.
I will not argue against the MOM for Barnes, he worked tirelessly and deserved his 2 goals, that is now 5 in 5.
My personal MOM was Ince.
I like the way that Ince and Bridcutt marshall the midfield.
Bridcutt is able to push forward because he knows Ince will cover him and vice versa.
A great reaction after tuesday night's disapointment.
Well done Oscar

Watched the game live here in Spain and was very impressed. Like others I think the Ince/Bridcutt midfield combo works excellently.

The question in my mind is Gus really going to place his faith in Liam right now? What I mean is, in his position is he really going to take a punt on a Championship player? Especially as I imagine TB is not going to give him away, we saw that with the Elliot Bennett situation.

Watched the Sunderland game as well. They are starting to look more like Brighton every time I see them!

Tuesday = dire. Today = awesome. What a match..!!!
Good football by two good teams.
I believe we have the new Yaya Toure / Patrick Viera. The guy rocks, & with OG guidance he will grow as the only flaw i see thus far is the ability to push into the box. Maybe he doesn't have that freedom or maybe he doesn't have that confidence but blimey he gets better & better & with LB back they compliment each other so beautifully. The Spanish right flank was fantastic as was the Celtic left. Brez looked assured, AB has a never say die attitude much like El Abd. Kaz was back to his fast low gravity running like he hasn't been away.
Without a doubt it was the finest 90 minute display I have seen this season at the Amex, we pressed over the park as a team & suffocated what Leicester tried to do (if indeed they actually had a game plan.?)
Everyday is good to be an Albion fan, Today was a little it better.

You change 1 dodgy spark plug on a car and it runs smoothly. You maje the right change in a football team then it runs smoothly. I had a little moan Tuesday and like many others said Ince should have been on. I also stated we played far too deep on Tuesday and today we pressed. I am pleased but still would like to see a real goalscorer like Lita play.

What a great team performance yesterday. Possibly the best all season after possibly the worst on Tuesday. I can't think of anyone that did not have a good game or was not fully committed to the game and team - well done to all of them. As fans, all we ask if that the team show that level of commitment and attitude for every game.

If we can turn in a performance like that every week, then playoffs and maybe promotion are ours but we MUST play like that every week.

For me, Bridcutt and Ince playing alongside each other was great to see and I hope that becomes a regular feature in the team from now on.

UTA!

That is a bit harsh on JFC, comparing him to a dodgy spark plug.
Yes he needed to be replaced by Ince after 2 below par performances.

few teams play 442
You cannot drop Barnes, For Lita to play, Barnes would need to move out wider at the expense of Conway or Lopez.
You need 1 out and out winger, so in reality Lopez would have to go.
And he was MOM in the 1st half yesterday

How can we possibly have a derby next year? The scumhurst pile will be in the Championship next season. If Tony Pulis tracksuit bottoms get any higher up his waist he won't be able to see his side getting beat every week. UTA

akbion64 didn't you see the result yesterday? Not the 3-1 but the 2-0 at Selhurst? Oscar suggested we try and pass the ball around a bit and blow me down it worked! Easy this management lark when you get the hang of it. We will stay in the Prem no doubt about that. The derby will be on next year if you manage to up your game and get yourselves promoted. I'm looking forward to a trip to the seaside.
