Ward could be struggling for Boro date

The Argus: Stephen Ward Stephen Ward

Albion could be forced into another defensive change as they prepare to face Middlesbrough.

Left-back Stephen Ward is racing against time to be fit for the clash on Teesside after taking a kick to the foot against Leicester on Saturday.

Ward did not train with the first team squad at Withdean yesterday.

Goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak (stomach muscle) and centre-back Gordon Greer (calf) are expected to miss out at the Riverside.

Assistant head coach Nathan Jones described Ward as “touch and go” for the weekend.

Albion have Inigo Calderon as a ready-made replacement at left-back but their defensive resources could face their biggest test of the season to date.

Centre-back Lewis Dunk played 90 minutes in an under-21 friendly at Charlton yesterday and would be an obvious option to bring into the matchday 18.

Dunk was up against senior striker Marvin Sordell in the first half and young pro Joe Pigott in the second as Albion came from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

Jones insisted Greer, who limped out of the 3-1 win over Leicester last Saturday, would be doing all he could to make a swift recovery.

He said: “He wants to play, he wants to come back.”

For crying out loud, the injuries just keep going on and on and on. The whole squad must be singing from the same hymn sheet because whoever is out or comes in doesn't seem to upset the rhythm of the side.

He's a development player brought in for the future.

Calde is a right back, and therefore not a ready made replacement for Ward. He can do an OK job but is far from a natural on the left side.

I did see Maksimenko play for the DS squad in lancing recently. He had just played for Latvia National team and looked the part. I’d trust him against the Boro

All these players we've bought in "for the future". When does the future actually arrive? We seem to buy them for the future, give them a few games in the reserves and then let them go (Agdestein, Bergkamp . . .). Where's Ben Dickinson been during our striker crisis? It's an odd strategy if we're not getting these people into the first team. I too have been impressed with Maksimenko; less so with Chicksen when I've seen him, his positioning seems questionable. But they need their chance, surely? We need to know if they can cut it or not and if they can't let's get someone who can.

Ward will be a big miss, he's developed during the season into a very solid left back and he's contributing much more going forwards now too. Sure, he's no Wayne Bridge but they were always going to be big boots to fill. Ward is certainly more than capable at this level and I think he is one of the first names on the team sheet, deservedly so. Cover for him on Saturday will need to be whoever can defend the best - I expect our approach to be much the same as for other away games recently: concentrate on not conceding any goals and see if we can put a chance away when we get it. That will be harder with a new-look defence but I have confidence in Brezovan and El-Abd, and it could be Conway's opportunity for a farewell gift...

Chicksen played for the DS yesterday in a friendly against Charlton which the DS won 3-2 after going 2-0 down.
If Ward doesn't play I would expect either Chicksen or Maksimenko to be on the bench on Saturday in addition to Dunk in view of GG's absence.
I must say the injury list isn't getting any shorter. Kuscszak, Ankergren, GG, Orlandi, CMS, Ulloa, Hoskins, probably Buckley still and now potentially Ward as well. One can see why one needs a squad of about 26-27 players just to put out a team.

And for all those on this site who wanted us to break the wage structure at the club and pay a fortune in wages to keep Wayne Bridge. Will be aware I hope that he is out injured.

Stephen Ward will be missed, as someone said, he has developed and his contribution increased as the season has developed, so much so that I have heard that Andrew Lloyd Webber has a new musical based on him.

Three from our regular back five likely to be missing, we know that two replacements slipped in with zero problems, a testament to Oscar and his training staff, filling the left back spot is not quite so easy, IMHO. I only say this because in the recent past Calde has stepped in to fill the spot, even though we have Maksi, who is a left back available. To me this suggests weakness in this position.
My guess is that Calde will start, Maksi on the bench, and I can live with that but, if not for this season, then certainly for the next one, we should target the signing of a fully fledged back up left back, IF, Maksi is deemed not up to it, and if a natural right back is having to fill in ahead of him, then maybe he isn't up to it.
My hope is that Maksi starts and has a good game, stakes his claim for that position, but if Oscar leaves him out, to me that will be saying a lot.

Ulloa might be fit to start but I can't see it happening, the last fifteen to twenty minutes seems more likely, no way is he going to be rushed back into the starting eleven, and he shouldn't be. The team played great last week and I don't see Oscar making changes. Brez and El-Abd, two enforced changes, should get the nod, and a replacement for Ward, other than that we go with the same line up.

'Ward could be struggling for Boro date' - strange headline. He must be the only bloke ever to struggle pulling up there. Very accommodating and extremely good company those Boro lasses.
