Goal hero Upson loving life at Albion

The Argus: Albion goal hero Matthew Upson Albion goal hero Matthew Upson

MATT Upson says dropping out of the Premier League to join Albion has rejuvenated his career.

Upson celebrated getting married yesterday with the only goal at Middlesbrough to lift the Seagulls to eighth in the Championship, their highest position of the season.

A head wound suffered by the 34-year-old former England centre-half spoilt his wedding photos but Upson is a picture of contentment with Albion after signing on loan from Stoke in January and then permanently in the summer.

He told The Argus: “I’ve got to a stage where I need to enjoy what I do. I wasn’t playing and there were times at Stoke when I wasn’t getting the level of enjoyment that I should have out of my football at that stage of my career.

“I have come here and it’s been a breath of fresh air for me. I’m really enjoying it. Football is about what you are doing in the here and now. You can’t live on past achievements or form. There wasn’t an appetite from a Premier League club to want to take me and play me in the team.

“I was more than happy to come to Brighton, which has the structure of a Premier League club but finds itself in the Championship. It’s striving to be a Premier League club and that’s important to me.”

Upson’s downward header from Craig Conway’s corner four minutes from time, his second goal in three games on his 40th straight League appearance, exposed Boro’s vulnerability defending set pieces.

“Yes, that got mentioned,” Upson said. “They were quite a big threat themselves from set plays. (Daniel) Ayala attacked the ball really well and was a handful but we hit the post in the first half (Ashley Barnes) and probably should have scored.”

Albion, two points outside the play-offs, have now lost only once in nine outings ahead of mid-table Huddersfield’s visit on Saturday.

Yep, agree with all on here. Upson has been a fantastic signing, true pro, and a real asset tot he squad. He is clearly enjoying life and his football at Brighton. Can we get another season or 2 out of him?

Journeyman whos never achieved anyhthing in his career, now been found out in the premier league for being too slow and thinks he can use the Albion to fill up his bank account while turning in 'ok' performances. We seem to be a magnet for these old dinosaurs, where's all the players of the future? Oh they're all injured.

Ironic, what with you becoming a journeyman troll who really can't be bothered making the effort any more. You turn up here, dutifully, but your enthusiasm for the task has gone, that spark is missing. Long since are the days when you even pretended to be an Albion supporter. Time to move on perhaps?

shame when some folk only look at the negative side of things---not that there are many at Brighton at the moment---they are the grey people of society. i much prefer reading from all those enthusiastic and sensible followers of Brighton. Remember---negative people never get anything positive out of life. Attitude is what counts.

To the WithdeanYears
Would not normally bother to address you but Upson I know to some degree a really good approachable and hard working guy and who in case it slips your memory played for his country many times and probably are most consistent and injury free signing. Positional sense second to none, just like when he played in the Premiership and for England.
Great shame you have to slag the club off, make constructive criticism by all means but personal attacks are not for this site.
Don't bother slagging me off either you won't get any response unless its from my lawyer.

Well you're easily pleased, the guys never won any silverware, played for England, one of the most underachieving nations in world football so no I really don't think he's quite the elite player you think he is. Just a middle of the road plodder overpaid for what he does. And don't be so pathetic having to hide behind a lawyer in case someone calls you names, stand up for yourself and fight your own battles, I wont even bother you'll probably burst into tears by the sound of it, what a fragile individual you must be.
