Albion's development squad goalkeeper Christian Walton has been called up by England for a training camp.

Walton is among 18 of the best young keepers in the country selected for regional camps in January.

He joins nine others from clubs in the south at the Surrey Sports Village in Guildford on the 16th and 17th for specialist advice from England's under 21's goalkeeping coach Martin Thomas, national team goalkeeping coach Simon Smith and Mark Mason.

Former Plymouth prospect Walton has been on the bench for Albion's first team for the last two matches as cover for Peter Brezovan in the absence through injury of both Tomasz Kuszczak and Casper Ankergren.

spank78---how naive!! Many Many players from the lower league clubs have gone on to become world class players. and I hope the young lad Walton is one of them. All credit to the club for spying him in the first place and then bringing him on to be selected for this special training---feather in the cap of Walton and the Club

This sort of recognition should boost his confidence, a lot of how well a 'keeper performs is due to confidence. The expert advice won't hurt either.

It may come as a surprise to you but, nearly every player comes from somewhere when you don't have a top class academy and the facilities that come hand in hand with that academy.
The fact that this particular lad was scouted and then signed doesn't diminish our involvement in his progress, wasn't Bridcutt a Chelsea cast off, he hasn't done too badly as he, and I think Brighton can take the credit for his success.
If we as a club can spot young talent at other clubs, there isn't any reason why we will not be able to do the same when our new facility is up and running, but we will still use our scouts to find some of these lads.

You're all completely missing the point - yes of course it's fantastic we spot these players such as Walton, Bridcutt et al from other clubs, but an Academy is not built, or created, and does not exist to develop players such as this. It's an ACADEMY - it's there to train players from Sussex and beyond from a young age with a view to being developed for the first team. Sorry - was Bridcutt from our academy or was he home grown?!
