'Brilliant' Upson can be key to play-off hopes

The Argus: Matt Upson Matt Upson

Matt Upson has been hailed as a key man to Albion’s hopes of making the play-offs.

The former England centre-back has helped the Seagulls enjoy the best away defensive record in the Championship so far this term.

They are being kept out of the top six only by goal difference at the halfway mark of the season.

Former Fulham striker and Brentford manager Leroy Rosenior – now a regular Championship pundit – tonight told BBC1’s Football League Show that they are a side to look out for thanks largely to Upson’s form.

Rosenior said: “Anybody can get on a run of results and get in that top six.

“I was really worried when Oscar Garcia took over. It was a difficult job taking over from Gus Poyet.

“He had injuries, he didn’t have forwards, but they have been solid and slowly but surely they have come into decent form.

“I think Upson has been brilliant for them and they have shown that, with consistency, you can get up there.”

Yep, Upson, along with Bridcutt, Ulloa, and Kusczak could probably hold their own in a promoted side, and Ince would be a decent bet for that also, given more experience this season. Jury is out on whether CMS can get back in that fold. Get the cheque book out Tony, you may need to buy a few come June.

Upson has been a fantastic signing, solid, reliable, low maintenance. He has made a big difference to our defence.

Top player for us last season and this. If bridcutt does go ,( I hope he waits till the season end or a top 8 club for his own benefit as much as ours) then give Upson captains arm band if GG still out injured.
Great result yesterday. Very topsy turkey form the last few games but we did say at season start please not so many draws !!!

Matthew Upson has proved to be a top signing for us with his experience, playing record and chipping in with a few goals. I still maintain, however, that Oscar Garcia is our best signing in recent years. Considering our injuries this season he has managed to get 100% plus out of the team. I know we've had a few blips but the progress we've made in the last 5 months has been nothing short of miraculous. After the CP debacle we could easily have gone into free fall. Watch us go in 2014.
