Penalty decision which enraged The Amex - with video

The Argus: Albion debate Simon Hooper's penalty decision Albion debate Simon Hooper's penalty decision

It was the decision which enraged The Amex.

Now, if you have not seen it already, judge for yourselves.

Did Inigo Calderon really foul Marc Pugh for the penalty which put Bournemouth ahead yesterday?

Or, as Albion argued vehemently, was it a fair tackle?

Then watch how Albion finally secured a point thanks to Stephen Ward’s late header.

From where I sat near the half way line, it looked a penalty. However seeing the video, I dont think it was.
We had more than enough opportunities to win the game which were wasted

The standard of refereeing is at an all time low. I'm struggling to believe so many refs and officials (there are 4) can be so incompetent. I seriously hope we don't have corrupt refs.

We can all make mistakes, but Caldes tackle was perfectly timed and got all of the ball. I'm in the Wsu at the front and 100% he got the ball first! to be fair to their player he didn't make a meal of it either. IMO, errors as blatant as that should result in a fee reduction for the official.

I am not defending the ref, however the player looked as though he was "taken " before the ball was touched from the video, I have to say that managers constantly complain about refs ( David Moyes ) but never take players to task for diving! Having seen this angle, it looks like caldi took the player, but from my seat he took the ball first! Was it a slight dive?

We need a video referee for all critical decisions such as these, there are camera's at every game nowadays and a 5th official or a panel to make an instant decision is a must imo. could have resulted in a red card for Caldi.
The ref didnt have a clear view so how could he make such a call, did the linesman give it! i dont think so, so the ref should be hauled in for a good talking to because he is no good at his job.
The Chelsea player that dived at the weekend is another thing that a video ref could sort out, the ref got it right on this occasion but how many get away with CHEATING! send them off and it will soon stop and a fairer game be had by all.

The other thing is he tackled with his left foot rather than his right which made it look worse, if it was a penalty... Why was Calderon not sent off as last man? Terrible decision by the ref , who then got it wrong again.

Yes that's a strange development with the game - defenders tackling with the wrong foot I mean - it happens all the time nowadays and I can't see and reason for it.

Can't believe we only played one up front again until it was too late, especially after the success with Barnes and Ulloa at Blackpool. I guess the reason is that the Blackpool was a bog and we had to have two up front to hoof it to!

I watched the replay with a Bournemouth fan after the game, and even he thought it was a fair tackle! He did take the man as well..but the ball contact was first, and football is a contact sport (or at least it was!). It wasn't booking as the challenge was not reckless, it was just a foul. Also didn't deny a goal scoring opportunity as the ball was going to the dead ball line - so no red card either. Some fans seem to think every foul in the penalty area is a red or yellow card. - but of course this wasn't a foul at all.

Having said all that, I agree with the comment above the refs have a very difficult job, and players and managers have a nerve to complain when they are all trying to con the referee or put pressure on officials with histrionics on the touchline etc. Everyone is trying to extract some kind of advantage, and the poor ref (and his assistants) has a split second to make a decision. I think the standard of refereeing is generally better than when I first started watching the game, which was a long time ago! There will always be mistakes, and they all get exposed today, with the benefit of slow motion replays.

The reason they now tackle like this is that the trailing leg cannot take out the player, Caldi clearly got the ball with his left foot, had he led with his right he would have wiped him out with his left/trailing leg, so a skilled calculated tackle by Caldi.

Hi, A question! Do you think that maybe refs in the lower divisions are actually to old for the job, can't keep up with the play?
I can only watch on-line but just seems they are on many occasions to far away and seem to forget they can consult with the linesman.
Anyone notice what the linesman gave immediately after the tackle?

To be perfectly fair to the referee I could understand why he gave it - Caldy went with his left foot and did make contact with the player, albeit that he played the ball as well. According to Eddie Howe, he is a really good referee and although he thought the decision was wrong, he got pretty much everything right thereafter. Referees make mistakes, simple as - have been worse decisions this season (the failure to see Watford's second "goal" earlier this season for one) - it is just part and parcel of the game.

The reason we all get annoyed is that ref's don't usually come out and say 'I made a mistake'. It did start to happen in the prem' with the press on their backs for days. That idiot in the middle yesterday could at least admit he was wrong. It's not often you hear the whole ground chanting at the referee. But clearly this was a huge misjudgement. He needs to be looked at by his superiors. They were saying on MOT'D yesterday that Howard whatsisface had produced the biggest **** up in history at Old Trafford. It wasn't as bad as at the Amex, that's for sure. UTA

Was never going to be a sending off even if the referee did deem it to be a foul. Going towards the touchline and wide of goal as well as other defenders possibly coming across. The referee definitely got that part right!

And there was me thinking the Watford 'goal' had been proved beyond ANY doubt to have not crossed the line... it seems to me that people want to think of us having had the benefit of a bad decision, even when the right call was made.

Anyway, that is water long under the bridge. The penalty decision was very, very poor, I think we almost all agree on that. The referee's angle wasn't the best as he may not have seen how cleanly the ball was taken by Calde, but he obviously couldn't have been sure it was a penalty yet decided to award it anyway.

Still, it wasn't as bad as the last penalty they got against us, or the one Soton got a year or two back.

I'm not complaining as a pay as you go but would like kids prices to remain low as they are the future fans and possibly players.
I hope we give March, Dickenson and Chicksen a good go

He definitely gets the ball first and then the player. No way was it penalty. What's more annoying is that sometimes referees must realise from the players reaction that they've made a mistake as I'm sure he did on this occasion. The Albion players were telling him to go and check with the Linesman but he was so arrogant and stubborn that he refused and he's made himself look ridiculous as a result.

Can anyone remember whether Kuszcak, great as he is, has ever saved a penalty for us? I don't believe he has - maybe worth him looking to alter hiss technique for this on the basis that on average you'd want your goalie to save ideally one in four (reckon he's let in maybe 7?). Am sure someone will know. He's been very close a few times

Beside Keith Andrews - have we had a "Keith" play for us since WW2?

Let's hope for experimentation come Saturday and see what we can really do when we put our minds to it. 25 shots on and off target in appalling conditions that don't suit our game is excellent - another day, 5 - 0

Have a look at the video again and pause it at 17sec.
You can clearly see Calde touching the ball and the player is still on his feet.
So contact was made after ,
Definitely NO penalty. Also the forward was not in a goal scoring position and there were 2 covering defenders. So NO it would not be a red card.

From where I was, it looked like a penalty, but I couldn't be 100% certain.
From the view the referee had, there was no way that he could have been 100% certain either.
If uncertainty exists, then the assistant referee should be called upon for his own viewpoint, and not just be used to indicate throw-ins etc.
Frustrating though it was, these incidents happen week in, week out elsewhere in the Leagues, and no matter how irritating it is, human error is constantly on display as a result.
Our ref' may have had a bad Christmas, or just a bad day. Whatever the reason, we take the point and move on. After all, we did actually move up the table after this draw.

You make me sick.

You are old enough to set an example but all you you do is act like a twelve year old, all decisions against the Albion are wrong, what a joke, no not decisions, you, your the joke..

Sorry, you're not really making sense. Unplug yourself for 10 minutes, reboot and try again with the 'rant' option switched off.

Also, it might be worth installing the 'spelling, punctuation and grammar' option.

Palace actually
Some on here know jack all, Calderon is right footed! My point was had his hip and thigh look very close to the other guy from the first video angle, had he slid with the right leg ( that would be less likely to trip him)
The tackle was perfect, I thought that Saturday , from the first angle, the player starts to go over before contact with the ball, that's why I said did he dive?

Very poor decision by the ref.
The reaction of the Bournemouth players suggests it wasn't a penalty.
Grabban also to his credit looks embarrassed when he scores the pen.
The only Albion player to come out of this with any credibility was Inigo who remained calm and clearly tried to explain himself whilst quite a few of our boys were all over the ref like a rash. Not a tactic designed to get the ref to change his mind!
Also Oscar remained relatively calm in his comments. A good example to our players unlike David Moyes who I admire greatly but appears to be losing the plot.
Referees have one chance to get it right and sometimes get it wrong as in this case.
We'll just have to get over it and move on. UTA

Only confirms what we all saw and knew in real time at the time from the WSU - a great possibly goal saving tackle in a risky situation. The arrogant whistler points to the spot within a micro second. Ex-pros/'experts'/ex
perienced football journalists always compliment the ref that takes his time to rethink contentious incidents through, and at the very least he should have consulted his team. Instead this arrogant fool pointed to the spot in a flash.
Hopefully the FL take action in the same way the PL have in the past where there have been blatant blunders by officials.

100% a clean tackle - decision was disgraceful....as was the next worst I've witnessed when opponent STEVE FLETCHER handled the ball OUTSIDE the area and the interfering lino persuaded the ref out of his original free kick decision. Who were those opponents that day? Oh yes, Eddie Howe's Bournemouth.

(Ref was atrocious when Eddie Howe's Burnley came to town in 2011-12 too!)
