Crofts sends Albion through

The Argus: Andrew Crofts fires Albion into the fourth round (photo Simon Dack) Andrew Crofts fires Albion into the fourth round (photo Simon Dack)

Andrew Crofts fired Albion into the fourth round of the FA Cup today.

The Seagulls were well worth their 1-0 home win over Reading, despite a few nervy moments late on.

Crofts fired home after an Ashley Barnes lay-off on 32 minutes to secure a place in tomorrow afternoon’s draw.

His shot took a deflection off Alex Pearce to beat outstanding Reading keeper Adam Federici.

But Albion were due a bit of luck.

Keith Andrews, impressive full debutant Solly March and Barnes had all hit the woodwork before the goal went in.

Federici later kept out March’s low drive and a Kemy Agustien curler.

Reading improved late on but the busy Adam Le Fondre headed their best chance off target.

Gordon Greer successfully came through 56 minutes on his return after a calf injury.

Adam Chicksen had his first start for the club at left-back and Lewis Dunk also enjoyed welcome game time after replacing Greer.

Good win, although some more goals would have been good. Doesn't sound like any new injuries, and a run out for GG, and a couple of the younger squad members.

Settle for that. We've hit the woodwork an extraordinary number of times in the last few games. At least today it wasn't the difference between winning and not. We're a good side, and it's so encouraging that March, Dunk, Chicksen and JFC had decent game time in a good match against good opposition (albeit not at full strength, Reading have a strong squad). Also that Agustien seems to be getting into his stride. He is real quality.

Would be gratful if any spectators can report on those players' performances today.

Good result considering the changes, hitting the wood work 4 times although how barnes hit the bar with the goal gapping, god knows. Andrews my MOTM by a mile, bossed the midfield and Solly played excellent ad well. Man Utd away please!!!

sounded like a good performance today, especially from March, Andrews and Crofts. Glad we are creating lots of chances, hope we start putting them away better soon. Even against B'mth where we had a poor spell for much of the game, we still created chances and Lee Camp, their keeper, was MoM for me. Likewise Federici was excellent today and was probably their best player. Unlucky, Adkins, can you keep up?

As its scheduled for the weekend of round 4, I'd suggest the answer is obviously yes! And far too early for it to be re-aaranged just yet.

Great crowd, great result today, and good to see OG giving some of the youngsters a chance. Delighted that Brighton are back where they belong as a club. Premier League football will become reality soon, if not this year.

If Liam goes to Sunderland then so be it; at least we have a top replacement now in Rohan Ince. But I hope that we can hold on to Leo as he will be near-impossible to replace in the January window.

Good result and great performance from the fringe boys today... Especially 1st half when the game really should have been put to bed.

Very very interesting post match interview with The management team... Nathan Jones AGAIN...
I wonder how telling the fact that he talked about "me" and "I" actually is... He mentioned how dropped players were angry with "him" and that "he" had made this decision and that decision... I don't think "we" or "us" (OG) was mentioned once... It does make you wonder... Well it does me.

After the interview the lead radio presenter went on to talk about a strong rumour of LB signing for Sunderland for £3M on Monday morning.
You have to think that there is something to it when it's coming from people that hold a position like that.
Like I said in a previous thread though.. The sooner the better should he move on.
I for one will wish him well even if it is at Sunderland.

The squad have a couple of days off now so I'm sure rumours will be rife with The Argus needing to fill a few columns

Roll on next Saturday and well done today lads

Well C&T, March was excellent and warranted his mom, very comfortable on the ball and strong for such a slight lad.Andrews had his best game for 75 minutes then misplaced a few passes. Chicksen did very well, got forward lots in the first half but sadly didn't get passed to when in loads of space. Agustien was ok, should have scored but had one touch to many, still looks overweight and slow, but could be a good player for us.
Crofty and Barnes worked hard all game, the latter should have scored with virtually an open goal but headed against the bar.
Dunk slotted in well and looked back to his best which is great news, we need cover in that area.
Lua Lua was electric when he came on for March, his pace is frightening at times, Reading couldn't cope with him, but to be fair they were poor all afternoon. We did sit back a bit in the last fifteen minutes but Brez had very little to do all game, but what he did he did very competently.
All in all a very good performance, let's hope we get Sunderland at home, now wouldn't that be a game!

Key players rested but on the bench if needed
Solly and Adam getting starts,Galloping Gordon getting 60 mins and trusting in JFC to occupy the gaping whole in midfield left by the absence of Liam and Rohan
Good performance all round under difficult playing conditions, few scary moments 2nd half but this was a game we deserved to win by a margin
Solly seemed unfased and was one of the best players on the pitch and Adam C seems to be growing in confidence just like Rohan Ince has done
Will be sad to see Liam go as it looks very likely now, but confident about cover
Man Utd at home please

Thank you Andrew Crofts. His dependability in front of goal is very comforting.
In all honesty it was a poor game, with little to get excited about. Reading were poor and we were better. Good strikes from Andrews and March deserved better than to come back off the woodwork, whilst Barne's miss sums up his striking instinct !!. I do so hope Burnley come back for him.
It was a disjointed performance with so many changes, but for me March stood out as another player with the ability to take on and beat his man and he's not frightened to let off a shot. Chicksen was also extremely efficient and though not offering the cutting edge going forward that Ward does, his defending was first class.
I cant really understand why Ulloa did not get a run out. After his injury and lay-off, he surely needs minutes on the pitch and not on the bench. Agustein was very disappointing. Played with little endeavour and graft and spurned two great opportunities to get shots away by over elaborating. Also 80% of his passes went backwards. in fact there was a general reluctance to get men forward into the Reading box today, which is also disappointing. Still a win is a win and the dream of Wembley remains, so I'm delighted with the result, delighted to see March get a run and delighted to see Crofts score again.
Also a great 10 minute cameo performance by Lua Lua.
Bridcutt not even on the bench suggests he's on his way. He would have been cup-tied today if he'd been named, so I guess that's why he was absent.
Roll on tomorrows fourth round draw and here's hoping for another home game

Good performance although Reading rolled over very lamely. The young lads all did pretty well. Chicksen, JFC and March all did well. Particularly the latter. Andrews was very good, seems to understand the game very well. Possibly a coach in the making. However, Barnes was my MoM. Worked tirelessly. Laid on the goal expertly and was a constant nuisance to their centre backs. He is worth a lot more than £750k on that performance.

Top Prem side next round, please.

and if he carries on like that we can save money and forget Conway. Imo if the likes of Andrews, Kemy , Jfc ,Crofts play like that more often then along with Ince maybe its not a bad time for Bridcutt to depart.

Not sure why Augustien is getting a bit of a roasting from some on here.. I thought he played great and had their defence all over the place on a couple of occasions. He is very comfortable on the ball and was running all over the pitch. I am assuming his knockers were leaving early to get their half time pints or to get on the odd coach waiting outside to ferry people back to Worthing with their zimmer frames.

A bit harsh to call it a poor game fratsomrover. We should have won more convincingly as we dominated the 1st half. Reading were better in the 2nd half but didn't really threaten until the last 10 mins. According to the match stats they had no attempts on target, which is almost true, as Brez had to make one save from a le Fondre flick. March looked good. Chicksen didn't do much wrong. Agustien was pretty good, but doesn't know how to score - I believe he's never scored in English (including Swansea) football and it showed. Andrews and Barnes were very good - contrary to other comments I don't think his 'open goal' chance was that straight forward. He had a defender in front of him and the keeper covering the other side of the goal, so it had to be a cushioned header over the defender in front of him and he didn't quite get it right. We have certainly been hitting the woodwork, but one will go in eventually.

As to transfer speculation I am not half as worried about LB going as I would have been at the start of the season. I think we could also do OK without Buckley. We would then have the opportunity to strengthen the squad - which already looks good without those 2 players. Don't want to lose anyone else though.

Chickson actually very much under used on the overlap today but I think Ward has competition imho as he gave us gave the team much more width aka Bridge ( obviously not in his league ..yet!)
Am very inspired by our next generation today , more so than some of the established players we have and would happily watch Oscars team evolve with these Guys.
Nathan doing lots of talking but if Oscar can mould our youngsters to play as they have been , am not worried about Nathan doing talking as real progress where it will matter is on the pitch and Oscar looks as if he's doing that ?..

Are you sure you have the right person? I didn't see any knockers! ;-)

Tatical nuance from Oscar and Nathan today
UTA................
Sorry meant Tactical
3.5 for Bridcutt is the rumour for Monday
3.5m is too low....has to be between 4-5m. C'mon TB....hardball negotiating mate!

That's why club need to get him on a three year deal.. If he walks we can hardly say we developed him!!

Where did you find the bit about ince it's not true probably
As long as Bridcutt and his lady keep away from the Hendon area they will be fine.Yates near the station is a popular waterring hole or Sinatras for late night bevy.

I think I may have been at a different game.
I thought it was a good performance by the Albion.
Agustien had a very good game. Andrews was sound.
March showed a lot of promise and JFC & Chicksen played well.
I will agree that we should push on to score a 2nd goal, but I never worried about Reading getting an equaliser.

Some team in the near future is going to be unlucky when these crossbar and post shots of ours start going in.
Until then, I worry, a one goal lead is never enough until the final whistle. We have to sart putting these chances away and getting the game won whilst we are on top in a match.

Excellent summary, Alfie.
