Albion talking point: What now for sparkling Solly?

Solly March took his chance to shine at The Amex today.

The young winger was tricky on the ball and twice went close to scoring.

He was given a standing ovation when he left the field and was a popular choice as the sponsors’ man-of-the-match.

So how big a part can he be in Albion’s future?

Would you like to see more of him in the Championship this season?

Or would he benefit for now from regular starts on loan elsewhere?

And did any of the other players who have had relatively limited playing time so far this season impress you today?

We’d love to know your thoughts.

I'd like to see Solly given a chance over Spanish Dave - looks as if he can take on and beat a defender and has a decent shot on him - we'll never know if he's not given a run .

Wonderful to see Solly March given a long overdue start today. I've posted a number of times that I wondered why he had not been given the same opportunities as Rohan Ince upto now?

Hope to see him used consistently and would be a total waste to send him out on loan.

Great result. Well done everyone.

I have said a few times to give him a chance. He is tricky on the ball and strong for such a slight build. I would play him over Lopez and Barnes when Ulloa is up front. I think he will give an "on form" Buckley a run for his money.

Man of the match also against Norwich in pre season it certainly is odd that Solly hasn't had more match time - our only player that is willing to look to beat his man in dangerous areas when Lua Lua is injured or can't be bothered and now that Buckley has decided to no longer go past his man

Agustien always looks as if he may do something special, as he did with setting up the goal - pity he cannot work out when to shoot!!

UTA!!

Solly is a great prospect and played well today. He has quick feet, a deceptive change of pace and packs a good shot. He is however very reliant on his left foot when making that final pass, cross or shot, which meant that playing wide right, he didn't once go outside his full back and he became a little predictable in so much that he always had to check back to get the ball on his left foot.
I'd like to see him on the left flank too.
Lua Lua also favours his right foot but always plays wide left and although it is exciting to see wingers cut inside to line up shots, it does make the point of attack very narrow and sometimes we require width to stretch defences and create greater space in front of goal.
He's a great prospect though and I hope he's signed up on a good contract so we can reap the benefit of the work that has been put into him.

Fully agree on all counts on today. Rumours all over but imho no better time to let Liam go and who knows who Oscar may bring in? Barnes worked tirelessly today but sadly is not a natural finisher who we could do with to supplement Leo.
Hands up for me as Andrews actually turned in a good performance today but he can cover for Ince IMHO .
Solly deserved standing ovation but I can see why he has been preferred till now as he needed to bulk up a wee bit to withstand challenges that will come in ,esp if he keeps putting in performances like today.
Some times with youngsters you have to be sparing with some or aka M Owen they spend best part of their latter careers injured.

T's quite refreshing when we win as the trolls are under their bridge. What I am also impressed with are the fans on here as we are in January and all we are concerned with is keeping our players; a bit different from last season and early this season where we we asking for strikers and flare midfielders. This team is a good team and could turn great if we continue to bring in the youngsters and of course finish our chances.
If I was training the Albion then I would spend a few days on shooting intp small goals and maybe we will not hit the woodwork as much.

Big mention to Lua Lua today; thought he made a couple of their players look like a pub team.

March is a very different player to Lopez. I would put him more in the Buckley/Conway category. Contrary to one of the posts above - he did go past the full back and cross with his right foot a couple of times, but I agree his preference is to cut in on his left. It seems to be the modern fashion to play wide players on their 'wrong' wing. I don't have a problem with that as long as the wide player can go both ways if needed. Kaz has worked that into his game, although the end product on his left peg is still unreliable.

It is good to know that 2 or 3 players are good enough to come through the ranks and look comfortable in the 1st team squad.

I thought that Solly really took the opportunity he was given today.

Given that Spanish Dave has been woeful thus far with the exception of a few decent passes, I'd like to see SM given a run in the side/squad.

Having him on one flank and Lua Lua on the other will give any defence in this league plenty to think about... It adds another dimension to our play and acts as an additional line of defence given that fullbacks will think twice before pushing on if they are up against skill and pace.

With LB seemingly off very soon it might be good to see RI start in the holding role against Birmingham with Crofts and Kemy filling the other berths
Lots of attacking intent but equally a strong solid back 6 if you count Ince in the equation.

Looking forward to Brum already

March did have a decent game today but my MOM was Keith Andrews. He worked his socks off today and was even sweeping up behind the centre backs. Lua Lua showed a strange reluctance to run with the ball and just wanted to waste as much time as possible. Reading were there for the taking today and I don't think we showed nearly enough desire to score a second goal after being so dominant in the first half.

March was outstanding in the first half and imo should stay and push for a match day squad place rather than going out on loan to gain playing time. With Buckley injured and KLL a bit injury prone, OG could use the funds from Bridcutts impending transfer to strengthen elsewhere. Would we really need Conway if Solly keeps up the good work?

imo the weakest part of our game is crossing the ball. I like Conway's commitment anyway but his crossing ability is being missed already.

Agree March was MOM today - great to see him take on players. Barnes was superb as well apart from the inexplicable miss. Today showed the depth of the squad. Chicken looks to have plenty of ability and speed as well.

Evening Jcd1972, although March was outstanding in first half, I thought overall Crofts put in a shift and a half today and was my mom. Imo the weakest part of our game is not getting bodies forward quick enough and if you dont play two up top this is always going to be a problem. You only have to look our goals scored coloumn to see that. Yes delivery should be better but today was another example of not winning more comfortably when we had the chance. I enjoyed game today but we do make it hard for ourselves sometimes.

Agustien was my MOM, now he is getting match fitness. he could be very important in the run in. Also Andrews was excellent in the holding role.

He's been a great player for us and I wish him all the best.
The £3m should help us bring back Conway and maybe a promising young striker.

IMHO Albion should be looking for an "Ings" type player to play off Leo Ulloa. I wasn't able to be at the game today so I missed the performance by Solly March. I know that some posters are saying he could be the ideal man to replace Will Buckley if he is sold, but I would hate to see Buckley go- as he has been one of our most outstanding players. Buckley has been occasionally used as a striker alongside Barnes/Ulloa - but it hasn't worked as he has missed a number of one-on-one opportunities to score (i.e at Yeovil, against Huddersfield and Blackpool - not to mention his dreadful miss away to Leeds which probably cost us 3 points.

I am wondering though, if Solly might be better suited to this role - whilst keeping Buckley in his best position on the right wing.

Assuming Bridcutt is sold, my team could thus be:-

LEFT RIGHT

KUSZCAK
WARD or CHICKSEN, EL ABD or GREER, UPSON, BRUNO
ORLANDI (LUA LUA) INCE AGUSTIEN BUCKLEY
ULLOA, BARNES or MARCH,

Solly was impressive again today. Wasn't quite my MoM but he wasn't far off. The only reason I could think of that he hadn't played more so far was the physical side of the game as he is quite a slight lad but he had no problem with that today. He actually won the ball back a few times with his strength. I don't see why he shouldn't play a much bigger part in the 2nd half of the season.

With him in contention we are well stocked in those positions off the front man without getting Conway back. A nice mix of talent too. Buckley and Lua Lua with their sheer pace, the former going down the right, the latter cutting in from the left. Then Orlandi, March and Lopez who are more technical, clever players. (Putting Solly in the same bracket as the technically gifted Spaniards is a compliment in itself). And, when Leo is up top, we also have Barnes who is good at getting into the box when the ball is on the other wing. Lots of ingredients to break down a defence there.

In fact, even if we lose Bridders and sign no-one, we are fairly well covered in all areas barring a major injury crisis. Especially when CMS is back to bolster the striking options. He could suit Oscar's style very well if he comes back as he was.

All in all, things look fairly promising for 2014!

All in all, things look fairly promising for 2014![/p][/quote]An excellent post, although I'd take Conway back if cheap as Buckers' MAY be on the way out in more ways than one! Captain Haddock
