Sussex cricketers Matt Prior helped rescue a man who intended to jump from a bridge in Sydney on Tuesday night.

Prior revealed that he and fellow England international Stuart Broad had helped to talk down the man, who the wicketkeeper-batsman descibed as ''in a bad way'', after they had left a bar to return to the team hotel.

Prior said they spoke to the man for nearly an hour before he was convinced not to jump from the bridge above Darling Harbour.

Prior helped to pull him down from the edge of the bridge before New South Wales police arrived.

''We just did what anybody would do in that situation,'' Prior told the Daily Telegraph.

''We were trying to help a bloke who was struggling and in a bad way.

''I look back and I'm just glad we left the bar when we did and we were there for him.''

The man was standing on the railings of the bridge as Prior and Broad walked back from a fundraiser for the Broad Appeal - a charity raising money and awareness to combat Motor Neurone Disease.

Terry Minish, the team's security officer, was with the England pair and claimed the man - who said he was from Cheltenham - had indicated he wanted to drown.

He had reportedly already thrown his telephone, passport and wallet into the water.
