Transfer window watch update: Barnes on brink of Burnley switch

The Argus: Ashley Barnes in action at Turf Moor last season. It is set to become his new home ground Ashley Barnes in action at Turf Moor last season. It is set to become his new home ground

Albion striker Ashley Barnes is poised to complete a move to Burnley tomorrow.

Barnes has passed a medical at Turf Moor and agreed personal terms, The Argus understands.

Leeds United's hopes of hijacking the deal appear to have been dashed, barring a last-gasp change of heart, although confirmation of Barnes' departure from The Amex is not expected until the morning.

He will move north for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £750,000.

Good player for us but missed too many clear cut chances.Let's hope some funds will be available to buy Conway and another striker (other than Obika).
Having said that ,in a way Ash will be more of a miss than losing Liam because there are good enough replacements for him right now but not enough cover right now for Ash with an unproven Obika.

Good luck for the future AB. I think this is a realistic move for him. If Burnley go up, AB will get a few games in the PL. If Brighton go up, I think AB recognises our ambitions are somewhat greater than Burnley, and he will probably not feature for us.

You always feel a bit of a tug at the emotions when a player who has developed over the years leaves for pastures new. A wholehearted performer who got it wrong a lot of times but scored some stunning goals.

Others have and contiue to see much in him which a lot of Brighton supporters did not so, nothing to do but wish him well except when he plays against us.

We seem to be a selling club at the moment. Why would we sell a player to promotion rivals? Crazy. He will be missed more than you think - try replacing him with another striker for the same money ! Very sad that we can't keep our squad together, and the additions are mostly loaners.

Haha. A ridiculously rose-tinted view on matters! Sure, he thinks we'll go up this year and he might not get a game so he's lowering his sights and signing for Burnley.!! Haha.

Maybe just maybe he thinks he's got more chance of going up with a team 11 points higher than us!

Brilliant.

Barnes leaving is not that much of a shock, not when you consider how long an offer has been on the table for him to pick up. I would like to think that the club pretty much knew this sale was going to happen, and by, 'knew,' mean knew perhaps even before the window opened. Now I am not saying that the club had an agreement earlier, but I do think that they were aware of the level of desire to buy held by Burnley, it just took the right numbers to make it happen.

Contrast the sale of Barnes to the approach taken with regard to Bridcutt possibly going to Sunderland, night and day difference. Both players want to go, one goes smoothly and the other gets told that his transfer request has been declined, even though both could be seen, 'by some,' as important to the squad.
Bridcutt will go nowhere unless Sunderland come up with a bid that meets our evaluation, and he might not go even then, not if Brighton want to hold on to him. Burnley met the price we wanted for Barnes, and we let him go, even though we only have two strikers, (including Obika).

If Sunderland, and by Sunderland I mean Poyet, are taking notes on how we handled the Barnes sale, they must by now know that they will have to offer the right numbers to even stand a chance of getting their man.
I, along with others, have used the term, when referring to the Bridcutt negotiations, 'playing hardball,' but on reflection I don't think they are. Playing hardball, to me, means that we have set a high price for a valued asset, maybe a price more than what he is worth I real terms, I don't think we are doing that. My bet is that we have placed a, 'fair,' valuation on Bridders and Sunderland, at this moment in time, don't want to pay it. 5 million for the lad, to be honest I think that is too high, 4 million would seem fair, but that money must be cash and not connected to performance or premiership survival clauses.

Sunderland need to come up with the money either later today or tomorrow or run the risk of Bridcutt getting injured and the whole deal falling by the wayside. I can't see Oscar not playing Bridders and I doubt that Bridders would let the side down if selected. Tomorrow might see this deal done.

Not suprised at this Barn Door has been a much improved player this seasson under Oscar, although he still seems to miss the easiest of chances, that said his work rate is fantastic with his movement off the ball you never see him give up when he loses the ball, he will dig deep to find the energy to chase back and help his team mates, that said we need someone to convert opertunities as well, apart from Ulloa and crofts from the midfield this has been lacking in the first half season.
Good Luck for the future AB and score a goal to prove a point when you next play us, in your own net.

If we get promoted this season, and if Barnes had stayed, do you think Barnes would get a look in if Oscar has the task of building a prem level survival squad? Barnes gets replaced by a player who can deliver at our current level, either by loan or purchase, that can be done for the same money or just a little more. There is not a lot of point buying players good enough for our level if we then can't use them if we go up. Loan deals will solve that problem. If we don't go up, well then we have a longer window to rebuild for next season.

I don't want to get into a p!ssing contest, but AB is out of contract in the summer. If we were going to give him a good long term secure contract, we would have done it. Fully appreciate that Burnley are much more likely than us to get promoted this season. My point was about the longer term, where the resources the Albion will have will far out way Burnley. That is a long term view. Footballers, agents, and some fans prefer the shorter term. However, TB is building a club for the future.

And Barnes fitted the Albion very well. A rarity at the Albion - a striker who rarely missed games through injury, scored goals (despite often being played as a sub or helping out on midfield), tenacious and not scared of battles when our 'gifted' players were getting out-muscled by physical opponents, and always gave 100% no matter where played.

So AB has areed personal terms and passed a medical but hasnt signed yet for Burnley. If hes got any sense he will wake up and get on the blower to his agent and tell him to call leeds. Just ask Kurt Nogan about what Burnley can do for your career? Lets sell Liam now and get in Becchio and maybe one other and get on with our season!!! UTA

You idiot, who do you have in mind? Van Persie or Mason
Holloway is about to sign Dobbie for the fourth time
Looks like we missed out once again

We seem to be a selling club at the moment. Why would we sell a player to promotion rivals? Crazy. He will be missed more than you think - try replacing him with another striker for the same money ! Very sad that we can't keep our squad together, and the additions are mostly loaners.
More sense in one post than her father made in all of his!
Perhaps she takes after her mother?

Wish him all the best - cannot fault his work ethic but not sure what all the fuss is about. He's not our best forward (and we don't play 2), he's not our best wide left player, he's not our best wide right player and he isn't a central midfielder.

£750k seems pretty good business for a squad player to me.

Well spotted Vegas. Did you notice last season (round about March I think), that there was a full Championship mid-week program with all of the eight B's playing each other? Now, that was spooky

It featured all the current B's, but Bournemouth have replaced Bristol City who were relegated

It has also just just dawned on me Vegas that another B has left us. Barker (George) to Swindon Town. It gets spookier.

It's a shame Derby is in the way really or it would have been Burnley after Birmingham with their new striker Barnes and our potential new Blue Birds.

Must do!

I'm amazed that so many people seem to have already forgotten Manag, son of Manag and Mr Carrot. I didn't think anyone could ever forget his well repeated phrase - 'In Gusset we're a muppet'. Perhaps he was not altogether wrong!

That said, much credit goes to GP for helping to revolutionise the club. Pity it all ended so badly.

It is clearly good business to sell Barnes now and get a fee than wait until his contract expires and get nothing. I think that for all his faults we will miss him. He would have scored and missed more if he had played alongside Ulloa as he had done with GM.
