Gus Poyet has revealed he lined up Argentinean international Santiago Vergini to play for Albion in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old centre-back is set to join Sunderland’s fight against relegation on a short term deal.

Poyet had lined him up for the Seagulls – should they have gone up from the Championship.

He said: “He is a player I know well because we were following him last season in case we went up with Brighton.

“I watched him for about six months when he was with Newells Old Boys and the way he plays, understands football and his physical size made me think of him as a potential signing.

“He has played one game for the national team and he has also been in the squad a few times.

“Then of course, everything happened in the summer, Brighton did not go up and I left the club.”

Poyet remains hopeful of adding Albion midfielder Liam Bridcutt to his squad this month.

Maybe if Gus had turned up more than 10 minutes before the second leg of the play-offs he may have had a better chance of going up and signing this guy?

I thought he said he felt he had reached the ceiling with Brighton, so what was he even thinking about any possible Premiership players for?
Just stump up a decent figure for Liam, Gus, and let that be an end to it.

Absolutely right.
Gus had a good eye for talent. Bet NJ or OG don't make half as good signings as Gus did or even would have done.

Speak for yourself. A lot of us like hearing about Football matters in general and old connections with the Albion. We are not all Sun readers you know.

I thought Gus did a good job up to a point but why lie . For Him to say he has had nothing to do with Liam going to Sunderland is an insult to everyone at the club . Would Liam even be a possible choice if Gus wasn't there . Come on Gus get on with trying to keep Sunderland up and leave your ex alone.

Sheesh Claude... I thought you were better than this.

Firstly, what has attendance to matches got to do with knowing what has become public record?

And secondly, why do people keep on trying to claim how many matches I attend? I have, as I have said several times before, been to several matches this season and watched several more online. Do you ignore everything Vegas says purely on the basis of his being in the US? If so then you're being silly, if not then this has nothing to do with attendance and you're being silly.
