Goal saved David from being taken off again by Albion

The Argus: David Lopez celebrates his winner David Lopez celebrates his winner

DAVID Lopez saved himself from the familar feeling of being substituted – by becoming Albion’s matchwinner at The Amex.

The Spaniard, pictured, was on the brink of being replaced by Solly March on the right-wing when he breached Birmingham’s defences with a sweet strike.

Youngster March was stripped and ready to come on as David pounced with an angled volley with the outside of his right foot.

Lopez revealed: “I knew. I looked and saw Solly was coming on, maybe for me. I had one chance, scored and then stayed on. The goal saved me.”

Lopez was eventually replaced by defender Adam El-Abd in the dying moments, not March, as Albion saw out a fifth win out of eight in all competitions. He said: “It was a good day for me, not only for the goal but for the team. We needed the three points. It was very important for us.

“It was the same as my goal at Birmingham last season and very important for me. Every game I am feeling better.”

We need Lopez to remain consistent; he is a threat fron set pieces and with Solly chomping at the bit then I hope he has a similar last half of the season as the one before.

Some hard games coming up and our position will change considerably due to the teams we are playing above us and closely challenging us. This is where the top teams buckle.
I would like to say 15 points out of the next 6 games but would be happy with 12. I am sure some of the other team results will go for us however if we start with 2 good away wins or a win and a draw then I will be happy. We have a cup game between the next 2 games I believe so lets get some of the youngsters involved.

A good strike from Spanish Dave Saturday to get us the three points, but that shouldn't detract from the point that he's had a disappointing season so far. Up until the goal, he had been pretty much anonymous, and I disagree with bbb1969 above, as I don't think he was much of threat from set pieces. I think it was the third corner before he managed to clear the first man. He has quality without doubt, but I'm surprised he's managed to keep a starting place in the side (perhaps the injuries to others have helped), so hopefully the goal with boost his confidence, and he'll find some good consistence form for the rest of the season. Sincerely hope so, as he is someone who could play a role in the middle in place of the unlucky Crofts perhaps, albeit a different style of player.

Spanish is a game changer, not his best season so far but I believe he is improving. Other than him, only Orlandi is a threat from set pieces. I'm not surprised OG is keeping faith with him, his goal Saturday was technically excellent, and probably the only way we were going to beat their keeper.

I would still like to see Solly given his chance. For me , he was amazing against Reading who are a Championship side after all, so he is obviously good enough . He needs a run in the team and his pace and skill will lead to more openings im sure. It does worry me that we are playing well against teams , without tearing them apart.. Defensively we are solid enough , its attacking and scoring goals we seem to be lacking.
Be good to see Obita once hes settled in and Chicksen involved too.

Just want to say that if Bridcutt wants to leave, let him go, only want players who want to play for the Albion, if we can get 3 million for him, then great, if he really wants to live in Sunderland then let the lad go, prefer Sussex myself, Buckley is never fit, if you could guarantee this then great, but plays 2 or 3 out for 2 or 3, thats no good. Time for Kemy to step up to the plate.

Spanish Dave comes in for a lot of criticism. But for me he has been the unsung hero of the team since the beginning of December. His pin point accuracy and vision created the first two goals against Leicester as well as several chances since that were not converted. His work rate has gone through the roof (OK there was room for improvement) and we now see him taking the odd shot at goal which never used to happen. So good for him and I hope we see lots more in the next few months.

David had his best game I have seen this season (not that that is saying much).... he saw quite alot of the ball, popped up on both flanks and in the middle and had at least two other excellent shots I can remember that went very close aside from his goal. He even took on some defenders and beat them once or twice which is again something that has been lacking. Think he deserved the full 90 minutes this time but having said that would be keen to get March in the team asap too.

David's selection is so easy to support and also so hard too. You look at his performance against Leicester and his goal, a goal we needed, against Birmingham, and you wonder how you can leave him out. Then you look at other matches and wonder how he ever got on the team sheet. Last season, as with this one, he blew hot and cold but eventually really started to deliver. Last season I recall saying that David was getting better with every game he played, this was during the second half of the year, some did not agree. I have to wonder if David needs certain players on the pitch to get the best out of him, perhaps his game knits better with certain players and not so well with others, I just don't know.
As said by Seagullsays, David takes three corners and can't get the ball past the first defender but against Leicester he delivers two crosses on a pin head and two goals resulted. The goal against Birmingham kept him on the park, it will probably keep him on the sheet against Derby.

Been disapointing for most of the season so far, made all the more frustrating because we all know what he's capable of. Saturday yet again he failed to clear the first man at corners and when he did he nearly got the other corner flag, but then sticks one in the back of the net with a sublime volley with the outside of his right boot, class!
Ulloa needs a rest imo, after coming back from his injury and scoring at Charlton i think we all thought he was ok, clearly he needs a break just to recharge, start next game with Obika and see how he goes, Ulloa on the bench if needed.
On the subject of free kicks, I think LuaLua should have a crack at a couple, with his power, get it on target and it will take some stopping (Liverpool match a couple of seasons ago)
Andrews, Ince and Agustien for midfield with Orlandi and LuaLua giving width to feed either Ulloa or Obika away from home, then drop a midfielder and play both upfront at the Amex. We have to many draws again this season and to make matters worse have scored less as well, having said that, we are ahead of where we were last season but we dont want to miss out on goal difference. UTA

David is class as Oscar knows, that's why he picks him when fit. Agree he has not had the consistency of last season but he would start for me every time.
I note that we are being linked with Leon Clarke at Coventry who has submitted a transfer request anyone else heard this?

I've already previously posted that I was impressed by David on Saturday. There was no disappearing this time. Committed performance throughout.. As others have stated, his first three corners failed to clear their first man at the post (and he was one of their shortest players!). That's a waste - and a waste of David. I would much prefer to see him just outside the box waiting for the corner. We know he has a deadly strike so someone else should take corners? Orland is the man for me but we need him fit to start and so any other candidates if he s not quite ready to play 90mins?

I have to agree
He also had a fine effort saved in the 1st half, and produced the layback to Crofts in the build up to the Goal.
Whilst he has not been as good as last season, He has been much better in recent weeks.
Some supporters have to have a player to moan about, Now that Ash has gone, there may be a few more on Dave's back.

Tricky one Vegas. Injuries are playing havoc with my 'best' midfield setup. David has to start for me. Solly is a prospect that should be in the 18 and feature at some stage but Augustein? The jury is well and truly out for me. Flashes of skill are not enough and six months on since signing, I'm not convinced he is fit enough for 90mins. Maybe start him and we will find out.

Yep you could be right about Kemmy's fitness but after six months I reckon he is as fit as he is ever going to be, unless he is carrying a long term niggle that we are not aware of.
In Crofts we have a player that can get forward but also undertake some defensive duties, David can do the same, he has done a good job when called upon for the right back position and we know he can pose a threat going forward.
Solly would have replaced David had he not scored, so maybe it could happen in the way I suggest. The bookies have us as form outsiders against Derby and they don't fancy a draw either, maybe Oscar will tell the lads to take the game to Derby and upset the odds, the David Solly option might just do it, it would certainly be a bold move on the part of Oscar.

That's the benefit of having a good squad, it keeps players on their toes as they know one lacklustre performance might see them lose their place.
With that in mind, dont you think Andrews has really tried to stamp his worth on the team in Bridcutt's absence and possible departure. He's a different player to the one we saw a month ago.
