Albion have challenged former Arsenal youngster Jeffrey Monakana to break into their first team squad.

The 20-year-old winger has joined from Preston North End for an undisclosed fee.

He has signed a development contract which takes him through until June next year.

Albion’s head of football operations David Burke said: “Jeffrey fits the criteria for the type of player we want to bring for the development group.

“He has a good grounding, good attitude and has the added bonus of more than 40 senior games at League One level with Preston and Colchester.

“A quick and powerful winger, Jeffrey is comfortable operating on either the left or right side.

“He has a year-and-a-half left at under-21 level and his challenge now is to make the transition from our development group into the first-team squad.”

Monakana, from Enfield, began his career with Arsenal before moving to Preston in 2012.

He went on loan to Colchester during the first half of the current season and started six league games.

His first senior goal helped Preston thump Crystal Palace 4-1 in the Capital One Cup last season.

This is the first time I've found out about a player joining us in Instagram. It makes me feel young again :-)

Talented but lazy, it seems. I'm sure we can sort him out... welcome to the club!

Did well at Preston last season. Worked hard and a livewire on the pitch and in the dressing room.
New management and he didn't fit in. Nothing unusual about that. Very much in the KLL mould. Fast and direct. Only just 20 with moee league experience than all our DS combined - no question he has the potential and could make the breakthrough and if he does he will be a real bargain

No, it's news of a signing rather than speculation, which makes a change and reflects the long-term strategy of the football club. Other business WILL happen.

Could this be the alternative to bringing Conway back - and a lot less expensive PLUS he is only 20 and Conway is 29?

With the wingers (incl players who can play well in that position) we already have at our disposal - Kaz, Bruno, Orlandi and March. This is wthout including Buckley - who may, may not, eventually get poached by a Premiership club either in this window, or if we fail to get to Premiership this season - in the summer.

Odd that only yesterday I posted details on a young lad that might be worth a go in the DV group, and today we have one. I think the scouting for young players has nothing to do with managing the senior squad of today, these lads are all about tomorrow.
The fact that we need to add to the squad should never stop us from seeking out young talent, they are our future and any monies involved is minimal. I find it very encouraging that another lad has joined us, and there will be more. I recall last year that the club was asking families to give a home to these lads during their time with us, and when our new facility comes on stream I would expect that quite a few willing families are going to be needed.

Tug it is possible that all the points that you have raised currently have a negative answer, but that is today, this lad is not for today.
Over the years I have employed a few people that others fired for various reasons, some later got fired by me but not all, one became, and still is, my closest friend on this planet.
It matters not what others think today, what counts is what the club and fans think this time next year. Oscar will work with this lad, if anyone is equipped to bring this lad on Oscar is, if it doesn't happen for the lad then that's it, but we shouldn't just write him off.
So he has some attitude issues, show me a lad of his age that hasn't, didn't Barnes get stupid when he tried to trip the ref, at an age older than this lad.

Anyone that asks, 'what can this lad do for our squad now,' the answer is clear, NOT A LOT, but look at his contract, it's a development contract, we are not looking for an impact today.

VegasSeagull

Hello Vegas mate ,yes i know maybe i am a teensy bit aprehensive about this lad ,truth is one line i read on the Preston site ,he is known for a lazy and bad training attitude ,that can effect the whole squad !. But what started me was burkes mug at the top ,it`s the old saying ,toothache go to a dentist ,or a Millwall fan ,sorry small attempt at levity ,bad eyes ,specsavers ,new player ,bypass manager/coach and go to a penny counter ,sorry it doesn`t work for me ,even though i do appreciate the FFP . By the way Hovite believes this lad has a part to play with Crofts out!.???

Hi tug and others, am just gonna put my view and I don't claim to be correct, have served a few years coaching/scouting so probably know nothing about football anyway.
A lot of players have been listed as lazy by supporters, but that as you say is open to our own interpretation, I haven't seen him play, so I'll reserve my own judgement on that, but, as with any situation in life, if we feel undervalued or surplus to requirements, do we not all struggle to perform to our full potential.
I don't profess to knowing the situation with this lad and Arsenal, but can only assume that he has a fair amount of ability to have been with them in the first place. I know the argument now will be 'but they got rid of him', but then so did Everton Re: Baines and Jagielka and also Liverpool with Ince (whom they are now chasing) Like I said previously, I'll reserve judgement on a player till I see him play.
When you say 95% of Preston fans, is that 95% of all Preston fans, or just 95% of those that expressed an opinion?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did not not our management at the time turn down one Ian Wright, it's fair to say, that people don't always know best, even when in a position where they should.
I think saying only footage of his best bits is a bit harsh, I'm sure statistically, Thierry Henri missed more than he scored, but we only remember his goals (and the handball!), therefore the only footage is gonna be his best bits!
I'm sure OG has a far greater say in transfers than he, or us, give him credit for, we have to remember that he made his name and reputation, coaching youngsters so I would think that his mindset is always going to lean towards potential rather than current ability, and with that in mind, I would assume we are building for the future, with his appointment and the way he is bringing youngsters through.
Personally, I would much prefer getting to the prem and staying there, than coming straight back down again because we hadn't invested enough in young players when we had the opportunity to do so.
But, as always, this is just my opinion, and I hope I'm man enough to put my hands up and say I'm wrong when I am. For the time being, I'll reserve judgement on any player until I see him play, but if your right, and he is a lame duck, I'll be the first to say sorry for doubting you.
In the meantime, UTA and heres to the future!

Tug... firstly i think you're doing Burke a massive disservice by thinking of him merely as a pen pusher. He is effectively chief scout, and you don't get that kind of job at this kind of club (and his previous clubs) without knowing a thing or two about football and footballers.

Secondly, as Vegas mentions, OG is the perfect man to bring out the best bits of the lad. OG has form with bringing the best out of raw talent: Monakana is young and possibly stupid, but he has plenty of time to wise up.

Finally, most of the posts I saw (maybe on a different forum, I don't know) said that he was indeed lazy but had loads of talent and potential and thought it possible that, with a change of scenery (it seems well known he was not happy in the north) he may well "tear up the championship". Indeed they were hoping there was a juicy sell-on clause as they thought this a definite possibility.

Basically, don't write off the kid (and the recruitment process) before we've had a chance to assess properly.

PS: Oscar when he joined stated clearly he was not here to build the squad, but to coach them (as indicated by his job title), as he has done at previous clubs. He was hoping that Burke would take on that extra responsibility. Signing new players and also coaching them is becoming an solely British way of doing things - the rest of the world has moved on. Let the coach concentrate on coaching.

Re the video only showing Monakana's best bits - a similar video of Goebel was linked to on here last week and about a dozen posters used that to decide we should definitely spend almost a million pounds on the fella. We have a mugshot at last! He looks like Kaz's younger brother - and apparently plays a bit like him too! Imagine both of them on the field together - twisting and turning! Teams usually put 2 or 3 defenders on Kaz when he comes on. If Monaka(z) does the same - the rest of the team can walk the ball into the net unchallenged!

It's been a "tug-o-war" night tonight! I understand your concerns and frustrations tug - but you never know - we might just have unearthed a gem in the making here - once Oscar gets to work on him - and once the AMEX start singing his name! Another Vicente? OLE..... OLE, OLE,OLE ...VICENTE..VICENTE!

Sure we need top quality players for the first team now but it is also encouraging to see exciting youngsters joining the DS. It is the likes of these players who will be forming the 1st team in three to five years time not the Greers, Upsons and Lopezs. If we want to make the premiership (but then stay there) we need to be patient and invest in the long term.

The one footed debate has always interested me. On the one hand I find it amazing that professional footballers are generally so one footed but then again it didn't seem to do Maradona (or Vicente, or Bale, or Messi) any harm (interestingly they are all left footers - is there something about left footers looking better than right footed players rather like batsmen in cricket?). Can anyone think of a truly both footed player (Glen Hoddle?).

But at least your voice is heard and the most important point you make is about why we are hearing so little from Oscar with regard to finding and choosing players. I want a team built in his image and one he is proud of, with the best of the team gus built made better by players oscar wants to play in his style and one we have become synonymous with. I am already proud to have Oscar lead the Albion, now I want to see him given the tools to do his job as a manager, not just a coach. Like you, and most of the posters on here we want the same thing. Success on the pitch, a well-run club off it, but one which does not become too corporate to forget its roots. UTA

Amazing to see such an intense debate over what is, for now, a fairly insignificant signing. Sounds like this lad has the physical attributes. If Oscar and the coaching team can add technique to that, we could have a very good player. As others have said, spending a little now could save millions in the future. It's a risk worth taking.

The "lazy" and "hard-working" descriptions don't tell the whole story in football. Sometimes top class players give the impression of being lazy but are very effective, often non- top class players work hard but to no effect.

What about that Zigic guy for Birmingham on Sat - both lazy and rubbish, can only be in the team purely for his height and hence the occasional header from a corner. Spent the whole game standing around moaning.
