Transfer window watch (Update 2): El-Abd leaves Albion

Adam El-Abd could be heading for Bristol City

Adam El-Abd could be heading for Bristol City

Adam El-Abd's long association with Albion has ended with a permanent move to Bristol City.

El-Abd has agreed a contract with the League One strugglers until June 2017 following talks this afternoon with Bristol boss and former Seagulls loan striker Steve Cotterill.

El-Abd has been Albion's third choice centre-half under Oscar Garcia this season, behind captain Gordon Greer and Matt Upson, after signing a new contract in the summer when Barnsley were interested in him.

He was relegated to the bench against Birmingham last Saturday after six successive starts to make way for the return to the starting line-up of fit-again Greer.

Egyptian international El-Abd was brought on in the dying stages of the 1-0 victory at The Amex.

It was the 29-year-old's 300th League appearance for Albion since making his first team debut in November 2003.

Lewis Dunk, Albion's fourth-choice central defender behind El-Abd, ironically had a loan spell at Bristol City earlier in the season under former manager Sean O'Driscoll.

I have to say that this is disappointing news. In the games which Adam played when Greer was injured - he was a rock in defence. He is a great substitute for any of our central defenders - and age is still on his side - whereas Greer and Upson are both well into their 30's. Doesn't make sense to me - unless Oscar believes that Dunk has the ability to take over this role. Also, if he is not sold (the article doesn't make this clear), but is on loan and can be recalled, then this would make more sense to me bearing in mind our injury record this season.

Whatever the reason, he has been a great servant to the club, has been an outstanding and committed "local" boy, and IMHO will always be an Albion legend.

Not too suprised bearing in mind Adam has played well for 6 matches and deserved to keep the shirt and he can probably see the writing on the wall and like Barnes with a young family needs longer term security.Albion offered him a years extension and it is probably clear he doesnt figure in future plans.
Always a nice guy and gives 100% and it will be a pity to see him go.
I wonder if there is some friction in the dressing room at the moment what with Barnes and now ElAbd,players were told they keep the shirt if they perform,he did perform but lost his shirt, very strange. Hope he decides to stay.

Well the update scuppers my thinking.

There is something going on within our club and I think that it is all tied to the Bridcutt sale. ne more heading for the exit door and I guess just like Barnes, this will be another we will choose to replace.
On the basis that we will always want to bring in better than those that left, we are going to spend, where is the money coming from, the sale of Bridcutt, perhaps? Grabban, a replacement for Crofts and now a new center back will be needed.

Sorry to hear the news about Adam. He's a great player to have in your squad and it's to his credit that he hasn't said a word (publicly, at least) about his lack of playing time. I'm sure he doesn't want to leave the Albion and that he just wants regular first-team football. Bristol City have a great fan base for a League One club.

Our biggest strength in recent years has been the centre of defence. I'm not surprised Steve Cook and Tommy Elphick are doing so well for Bournemouth.

Just hope this lad Grabban can do the business for us. I'm a little worried that Bournemouth fans don't seem too upset about his impending departure. Perhaps they view him the same way as we viewed Ashley Barnes...good team player but not indispensable?

Haven't been this gutted to hear about a player leaving since Murray.

Adam is such a professional lad. He is always 100% committed to the cause and has become in my mind "part of the furniture".
I understand his motives for this move.. He does after all warrant 1st team football. I thought he was excellent filling in for GG and extremely unlucky to lose his place so quickly.
In the 1st division, I think he will be a revelation and I can only think that someone has done one hell of a job in persuading him to drop a division.
Adam is a fantastic lad and been a true ambassador for our club.. He will be missed.

Re Dunk... I think he can step up to the plate and some if can find his form and confidence of a couple of seasons back.

I can only imagine Oscar will then buy a new centre-half, as he certainly rates El-Abd higher than Dunk. Shame to see him go. I do hope he's replaced as you really don't want to lose strength in depth in the January window. You need 4 decent centre-halves in your squad. It's not like Ince will play there. He's very much needed in midfield. He's a starter there even when Crofts and Bridcutt are both playing.

Even if there is someone else lined up, they might not sign, and it's a risk to lose a reliable CB at this time of the season. Couldn't we have waited until summer? How does Adam have left on his contract?

I think we have to accept that all the movements now are also a 'Gus Clearout'. Not that all his signings will go as that's impossible but I do think that Oscar prefers a more cultured CB style, together with strength as well - like Matthew Upson.

I think A el Abd is a great lad but he could often be a liability when in the box with some of his shenanigans - like getting attackers around the throat etc. Maybe OG will work on Lewis Dunk as he really showed some class before his off the field problems surfaced. Now there a thing of the past perhaps he's going to shine through again.

Anyway, I'm not to bothered about this one and wish the lad all the best. He certainly deserves to play in someones first team week in week out. So good luck Adam.

Best if it's permanent in the sense that it may lead to a replacement. There'd be no point him being out on loan, unless we have the option to recall in case of injury. Greer & Upson won't be able to play every single game until the end of the season, and there's always the risk of both being out at the same time.

It was my hope that during the summer break we would move fringe players on and use some of our older players as cover for new signings, the back four being the one area to come to grips with. I had also hoped that we might look for more skillful players in other positions on the park.

The outward movement of Barnes and El-Abd would have been two I would have chosen to replace so in all honesty, I don't have a problem with either of them going. The moving on of both Barker and Dickenson also seems like the right thing to do, so again no problem for me. The most important thing now is to see who we bring in, Grabban looks like a good signing, if we get him, certainly one that would be good enough for next year if we don't get promoted and maybe good enough for the bench if we do, time will tell.

I still think that some of our dealings are connected to the fact that the club, 'know,' that Bridders is going, and going soon. I don't think that we are done with this window, not yet.

Yes El-Abd has been granted a testimonial next season which he qualifies for since he will have spent ten years at the club. Quite a Financial windfall to turn down.
I can't see much point in him only going on Loan from our perspective as I imagine we would need to bring in a replacement for him (would Dunk suffice ?). Perhaps Maksimenko is showing up well in training etc. The only short term benefit would be freeing up some more of the wages Budget to help secure Grabban. From Adam's perspective I can see that the benefit of regular virtually guaranteed first team football given his World Cup dreams would be attractive.
So much for a quiet Transfer Window.
So far we have sold Barnes and Barker raising say £800,000.
Seem to be selling El-Abd and Dickenson. Have loaned Goodwin to Torquay.
Obita has joined on a 93 day Loan. We have signed Monakana from Preston and might be signing Grabban for £1.1 Million.
Then there is the question of whether Bridcutt and Buckley stay or join Sunderland.
We are also still waiting to see if Conway will return from Cardiff and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Development Squad having a RB and a striker added - we passed on that young French RB recently.
Finally we are quite likely to be trying to line up a replacement for Crofts. Probably on Loan but it is feasible any midfielder might be recruited on a permanent deal.
I am not sure how many of the match squad I will recognise when I next go to the Amex for the Doncaster game. If we have too much change will the team's current form be adversely affected ?
Certainly it's not dull at the Amex at the moment.

Honestly reading some of the posts on here you'd think we have got the muppets in charge of our club , if everyone stopped being so sentimental and pessimistic for a minute and looked at this logically . Do you really believe that tony and the management staff would sanction a move that would leave us short on cover if a deal has not probably already been done to replace and as much as I like Adam will most likely be a better prospect. It is well known OG would prefer pacier cb's so sit back and trust in our owners as I believe they do know what they are doing.

Bristol City were today closing in on the signing of Brighton defender Adam El Abd.

The Egypt international met with Robins manager Steve Cotterill for talks in Bristol this afternoon.

If a deal is agreed and he passes a medical examination, the 29-year-old will go straight into the squad for Saturday's home League One clash against MK Dons.

We do seem to be a bit short in defence and have never really made that marquee signing since Gus's Van Dijk deal fell through (expect that might have been in his thoughts when he started on about "ceilings").

As for El Abd he was a good strong committed player, very good barging defenders out of the way in walls, but did make me feel a bit on edge that he was likely to give a foul or penalty away at any moment. At least I won't confuse him with Bruno now.

I say buy, if we have the money, someone under the age of 27 and with some pace over the ground. Now if we do that, does Greer, or Upson, keep his place. I would guess that a loan signing would only be cover and thus ensure that our existing start every week. Buy for this and next year or borrow for this year only, those are the two options.

Perhaps muppets would do better... it must be a really tough job running Brigton and Hove Albion FC.... In Oscar I trust, in Burke/Barber I don't. We have witnessed two loyal 100 per cent first-team squad players given the boot in the space of seven days. There IS something wrong in this, especially to be doing this in January as opposed to the close season. We should have given Ash a longer deal and saved ourselves 1.1m on a replacement.

That is a real surprise. Adams progress under GP was incredible and he is a top Championship CB. What a coop for Bristol City. I can only imagine that he was promised the opportunity to leave to pursue first team football. One might imagine captain of the Bristol City side and an opportunity to be their stand out player and leader.

What does that mean for us? Do the management believe that Dunk is now able to move to 3rd choice and Maksi 4th? Possibly. But for me still a strange one when we are pushing to get out of this league. I could certainly understand it had we been promoted already but the timing is off for me. There must be more to this.

Anyway, a big thank you Adam for your commitment and hard work for us. You are a top professional.

He learnt and expanded beyond some of his more obvious flaws to become an accomplished defender of Championship standard. No mean feat. The defence generally is going to need an overhaul. Age is against us for another campaign in the championship and quality (just age in Upson's case) is against us if we get promoted.
The current comings and goings point towards a sensible approach to pushing on for promotion. Shame that's a bit boring for the WUMS and doom mongers.
On a personal note, Adam's departure is indeed a sad day. You'd have him in the trenches with you.
Barnes was not ideally fitted to all the roles that were demanded of him but was such a good professional and indeed player, that he manged to force himself into those roles and adapt to those demands.
Both these players will be remembered with varying degrees of fondness but it does appear that we are moving on...

For this amount of business to be going on in the January window, there must be some kind of restructuring plan that has been agreed with OG/NJ. For me, the only danger of dealing in the January window is if it's in desperation and all done at the last minute. This seems to be a measured approach, and one that very few were predicting on here a few weeks ago. I assume we must have some sort of fee for Adam as he still had 18 months on his contract? My guess is it will be a young promising CB addition to the squad. These moves are also freeing up the wages budget. All gone very quiet on the Bridcutt front - maybe we are going to up our offer to him or just stick it out unless Sunderland up their bid. They are more desperate than us. Still only one first team regular out - plus the injury to Crofts - so it's hardly a revolution just yet.

Re Grabban, I think the Bournemouth fans are trying to put a positive spin on a real loss. I thought he looked sharp in that game at the Amex. Good positionally, confident and pretty powerful. I think he might be the 1st Oscar driven signing.

As for Adam if we got good money for him then so well and good. May be Barber's thinking coming through the old "Premiership ready". Was Barnes a Premiership player.. No. Is Grabban a Premiership player.. Quite possibly. Is El Abd a premiership player..No. Is Dunk a Premiership player..Quite possibly.

We shall need strengthening at the back though as the Latvian lad is yet to have his time for reasons that must be obvious to those that pick the squad.

I think it is good we are freshening up the squad. It does no harm as long as it is researched, planned and executed well.

So far we have potentially four out and four in, exc. Bridcutt. I think the style of play is working towards Oscar's playing higher up the park idea.
