Albion miss out on Grabban

Albion have missed out on £1.1 million Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban.

He has decided instead to stay-put instead with the Cherries and has signed a new and improved three-and-a-half year contract today.

The U-turn comes after the Seagulls failed to agree personal terms with Grabban.

The Argus website revealed earlier this morning the prospect of Grabban remaining at Bournemouth.

He put pen to paper at lunchtime and will now be involved in Bournemouth's home game against Watford.

Albion are expected to revert their attention to Cardiff's Joe Mason. He will cost around £2 million but will fit in with the Seagulls' wage structure.

I should have added that if paying an extra million for Mason still is cheaper than signing Grabban AND his wages, then his wage demands must have been huge.
How are B'mouth going to afford that? Or was it nothing to do with wages?

Missed out? More like a near-miss for us.
Well done to bournemouth for saving us from Grabban. Just strange we were ever in for him in the first place. He's at bournemeouth for a reason. Seven clubs already, 26 years old, average player with an average club. I hope next time we make a move we are a bit more adventurous and go for real quality as opposed to a League One journeyman.

Well if we make the offer and the lad comes for talks, it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to say yes. I bet as soon as we make the offer other clubs will want to talk to him, I swear that some clubs are simply trying to stop us from improving what is already a good squad, sign who we want and reduce our threat of winning a top six spot.

Surly with the connections to Spain with our Spanish players and also with our Manager we can find another Ulloa out there and for Two Million we could probably get two new players.
We have some very good players that have come through from the DS and I bet there are more still in the wings waiting to prove themselves.

I agree, I read Bournemouth's local Echo (same as Argus) and even their supporters don't rate him. He misses as many as he scores. Plus if he was being greedy with terms, let him stew at a small club.

We need to aim higher to achieve our aims. We need to kill teams off and Calde was right when he said that we haven't been outclassed in any of our games so far (hope that's not a bad omen for today!). So a good striker giving us breathing space in games will complete the package.

What about loaning Negredo from Man City, he looks like he isn't enjoying his game at the moment? : )

Agreed. He must. We don't have that much of a good record do we for buying out and out good strikers in the past 3 years do we - Leo aside!! Scoring goals is a key part of getting promoted - we haven't been great at scoring volumes of goals in any of our 3 seasons so far at The Amex. Suss that and we shall be flying (most of time we have been great at creating chances). Time and again we have seen sides at home create virtually noting decent the whole match but still nick one as they have a clinical striker or two!!

I think recent events bear out why GP became so unhappy and wanted away. If we can't out-compete with Bournemouth and Burnley for wages/contracts we are clearly being very cautious with FFP in mind. I know it all depends on how highly we value a player, and we don't want to be ripped off.

Personally I would prefer to get Mason as he is younger and has played in a Championship winning team - but £2m seems over the top. Prices in the Jan window are only over inflated if you are desperate and pay an inflated price. With CMS getting fit and Obika in reserve, I don't think we are that desperate. Also, some clubs will be wanting to sell players nearing the end of their contracts, so you can still get a good deal.

PS Interesting stuff about GP and his man management skills on the BBC web site.

Chi - I don't think it's so much a case of not being able to compete with another club but, rather, the value we placed on Grabban. I'd feel sure we could have met his demands but did not believe it represented value-for-money. That would be my take on it.

I said the best fans not the most. Is that too hard for you lot to understand?
Would you have donated 3k for the opposition to have 3 free coaches to come down for a rearranged match?

Oh and Eddie Howe said club hasn't and won't break wage structure and that grabban is probably the lowest paid championship striker.
Doesn't say much for you trying to impress him with visions of grandeur.!

I am happy that Grabban isn't coming to the Albion - but judging by his behaviour over the past few seasons, I wouldn't imagine he will be a Bournemouth player for much longer either.
