Albion were down to bare bones

The Argus: Stephen Ward was encouraged by Albion's display Stephen Ward was encouraged by Albion's display

Stephen Ward has admitted it felt like Albion were “down to the bare bones” in the defeat at Derby.

But the Irish defender insists the performance was encouraging.

Injuries combined with the sales of Ashley Barnes and Adam El-Abd left head coach Oscar Garcia with a depleted squad.

Kazenga LuaLua (hamstring) joined the casualty list headed by Andrew Crofts as Oscar fielded six subs with fewer than 40 Championship appearances between them over the last 13 months.

Left-back Ward told The Argus: “It felt like we were down to the bare bones with Bucker (Will Buckley) out as well. It's been a strange week but to put in a performance like we did shows the real character in the squad and how good a team we are.

“Derby have turned over many a good team and scored goal after goal, so to perform like we did is pleasing. We're just really disappointed not to have taken something from the game.”

A fair point from Ward, and one worth thinking about before slating the team's performance on Saturday.

Genuinely not blaming the Argus in any way but this is another trendy piece that upsets the applecart.
Since we lost at Derby, we've had Orlandi saying Bridcutt's attitude was 'spot on' and now Ward saying we haven't got enough players. I'd bet Orlandi was trying to convey that preparation was merely business as usual and Ward was trying to talk up a battling performance against the odds, but the sentiments have been mildly spun to suit the current agenda.
Yes there are a couple of positive nudges in Ward's stuff but the obvious storyline - and natural headline - is another stab in the direction of uncertainty.
If OG is only the coach and the players merely players, then those who ARE responsible for recruitment and release need to take them out of the firing line by manning up and doing something.

We have been unlucky with injuries or bad at keeping our players fit. Either way we also seem poor at attracting replacements to cover exits and injuries.
Maybe we need to review what contracts we offer because with our set up I would have thought players would be falling over themselves to come here. It's not rocket science but other clubs seem able to attract experienced players so why do we have so much difficulty.
Are we the only club sticking too strictly to FFP rules?
Fair point from Wardy.

Liam should have been told to play given his statement about playing 100% for the club made in the past!!!

More especially so with the Crofts/KLL injuries. He's under contract and that's that. No play then stick him with the DS until he's gone or realises he's paid to play football!!!

Down to the bare bones and still Augestein doesn't get a game. Down to the bare bones before Christmas and Lita didn't get a game. Come on, the bones aren't that bare surely. I question the need for new signings and loanees when they aren't good enough to get in the first team, but when we are down to the bare bones and they still don't get a game what is the point?

Absolutely spot on, why on earth does OG not start Augestein, ? He looks class to me, otherwise why did we buy him ?
What is happening with KLL"s contract, he is up in the summer I think, there will be no shortage of championship clubs keen to sign him
Both players have deserved more starts than they have received, where as David starts too often.

Now that would be interesting and not beyond the realms of possibility considering he instigated the saving of the club with DK.

If we can't get Brady, perhaps we could make an audacious attempt to get Steve Heighway out of retirement to at least be a consultant on a part-time basis.
