Talking point: What sort of team should Albion select for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Port Vale?

Oscar Garcia has decisions to make

Oscar Garcia has decisions to make

Albion have a great chance of reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday when they travel to Port Vale but how seriously should boss Oscar Garcia treat the competition?

Should he rest key players and give the youngsters and fringe players a chance bearing in mind Seagulls have a vital league fixture at Burnley three days later?

Or is it best to go for glory when the odds of getting a glamour tie in the next round will shorten.

We would love to know your views so join the debate here.

For me the most important thing is to get Leo scoring again, could be the opportunity for him. The youngsters did well against Reading, so deserve another shot and give a rest to a few of the old men :-)

The club owe it to those of us who are travelling, and spending our hard earned money , to field a team that will win us the game. And by that I mean it should be a full strength team. There are also the financial implications of a win (prizemoney) and playing in the next round (gate receipts and possible TV money).

A similar team hammered Reading, who then went on to win at Watford and thrash Bolton, so can't be bad.

Agreed! Great line-up. Orlandi and Ulloa need competitive match time for fitness. For the same reason, i feel that Agustien should start in place of Andrews, too.
Would be great to have all those youngsters you listed start the match, if the Development squad really are to, er, develop into first team players.

i like Alan Duffy's team - remember Alan Duffy well (when he wasn't leading our line wasn't he also the British bake bean eating champion?) - March has to play, Chicksen and Dunk also, and I guess one of the reserve keepers and Forster-Caskey.

That said, imo the bottom line is we pick a team to WIN.

We have to pick a team strong enough to win and I agree with many here that the sooner we start scoring goals the better. I wouldn't want to go to Burnley on the back of a shock defeat. It wouldn't do morale any good at all.
Ulloa and Orlandi need match practise and March is well worth his place with his inventiveness and pace. Agustein, Andrews and Ince should be good enough as a core midfield allowing March/Buckley and Orlandi to support Ulloa. Would be a good game to leave out Lopez as he's been off the pace lately. I rather hope Greer and Upson and the two full backs would have enough experience to gain another clean sheet.
At the end of the day, a win brings in buckets full of money plus th3 chance of a real money spinner in Round 5.
It is also, THE FA CUP........ a very special competition.

I only expect a win on Saturday - and I'll be there to see it. Even with our injury concerns we still have a wealth of young talent and we should prove to have too much quality for Port Vale to overcome. I personally would stick with TK in goal, play an attacking formation and once the tie is settled - ideally about 40 minutes in - start using the subs every 15 or so minutes after half time - resting some of the really important players that we don't have loads of backup for right now.

I'd also get some players signed today but I'm starting to think thats just all of us fans wishful thinking.

Two strikers. Decent team with power on the bench. Morale-wise, we cannot afford to lose the game at the moment. We could use a boost having lost Adam, Barnes and Crofty screwing his knee up.

Oscar wont put Ince back in the defence ,unless we are really in trouble injury wise ,after all he was the one to move him to midfield ,and he is flourishing . Agree with above ,we should play a strong enough side to get the win ,if we get a good lead ,then sub the most important . UTA

Hi Tug, I put up a 4-4-2 line up which includes both Ulloa and Obika, any thoughts?
My thinking being, if Ulloa can bag a goal or two in the first half we can take him off, put David on, this would give a boost to Ulloa. By playing both of them we might get a feel for what might be possible regarding 4-4-2 in our regular matches. If Obika were to play the second half as the loan striker, we would also learn something about him too. I know we want to win this cup match but we also need to find out a few things and this match is a chance to experiment a little whilst still having a team that should win.

Agree with above ,we should play a strong enough side to get the win ,if we get a good lead ,then sub the most important . UTA[/p]
I know we want to win this cup match but we also need to find out a few things and this match is a chance to experiment a little whilst still having a team that should win.[/p]
Hi Vegas ,yep makes perfect sense ,i would like to see us try something new for a comparrison ,you never know !. I`m trying to work out if i can manage to get to Stoke and back to the West country in one day ?. Stupidly i have manged to screw up my laptop ,so everything in slow mo ,i`ll have to pester my son in law to fix it again ! . UTA[/p]
Splash the cash Tug and have a motor bike courier service take it, get your lad to fix it and then have it biked back, it will costs a few bucks but how can a Brighton supporter such as your good self get by without his trusted laptop. Playing 4-4-2 would be interesting but I think OG is even more reluctant to try it than GP. Under GP we played with Barnes Murray and Wood up front for the 2nd half of the season .. and scored a load of goals... but I don't think we have 3 fit forwards at the moment! I am hoping that March, Ulloa and Orlandi are in the starting line up and that Buckers gets a run out. Any news on KLL ?

We should win but it will be tough.

PS I think Alan Duffy was in the pub when he wasn't leading the line! His debut goal against Bradford City is still one of the best all time Albion goals in my book.

Chi Gull, I am only suggesting that we try 4-4-2 for this particular cup match, if only to see how Ulloa and Obika would perform when both on the park. Maybe a 45 minute experiment. If we can learn from the experiment and win the match, then it's all good.

For me the most important thing is to get Leo scoring again, could be the opportunity for him. The youngsters did well against Reading, so deserve another shot and give a rest to a few of the old men :-)
Maybe use Ince holding instead of Andrews and give Kemmy a start, he seriously needs game time

As a club and fans, we need to change our mindset to the fa cup. We shouldn't be looking for the "big draw" and subsequent big day out / valiant defeat. With a kind draw we could easily make Wembley (semi finals). We are high end championship team. there are only about 7 teams that it is unlikely we could turnover. Supporting a football team is about the glory and making history not paydays. Play our strongest team with maybe 1 fringe player )march)

My reason for having Andrews with Ince is because when Bridcutt goes, this will be the most likely pairing, but I can see your thinking re Agustien

Vegas, I agree we should try something different even if it is just to upset the way other teams line up against us; not just Port Vale. As to putting Leo on until he scores then take him off are we not in danger of upsetting his flow (for want of a better word).

Yeah you could be right about Ulloa but we only have two fit strikers, if we go 4-4-2 the longer they are both on the park the more chance of injury. Get Ulloa on the score sheet, give him a confidence boost and see how he works with Obika, then pull him off.
