Obika gets first start as Albion ring the changes

The Argus: Jonathan Obika Jonathan Obika

Albion have handed Jonathan Obika his first start for the club as they face an FA Cup battle.

His introduction in place of the rested Leo Ulloa for today’s fourth-round tie at sodden Port Vale is one of seven changes to the side which lost at Derby last week.

Young winger Solly March is brought back for his second senior start having impressed against Reading in the third round.

Inigo Calderon returns in place of the rested Bruno and skippers the side Perhaps most surprisingly, Matt Upson is not among the players given a breather.

Andrea Orlandi gets another chance to build his match fitness after starting at the iPro Stadium.

Conditions will be tricky after a violent hailstorm swept across Vale Park at about 1.30pm, further drenching an already wet pitch.

Albion: Brezovan; Calderon, Dunk, Upson, Chicksen; Ince, Agustien, Forster-Caskey; Orlandi, Obika, March. Subs: Ankergren, Ward, Andrews, Bruno, Greer, LuaLua, Ulloa.

I don't think I like this line up, to me it looks too complacent. I hope I am wrong, if anything the bench looks too strong.

Plenty of youth in the side, Dunk and Chicksen could do themselves some good with a solid performance, same for Solly, Augustien needs to stamp his authority in midfield against players from a lower league imo, or face becoming a bench warmer at best. Big pitch should suit us, they will try and put us under pressure from the start but if we start well our style of play should be enough. Obika can make his mark today, with Cms only a couple of weeks away, a goal or two for him will keep him in the frame. A tough one but I think 1-2 to us. UTA

I am just not sure that we are showing Vale enough respect, I would like to have seen an experienced head in midfield. As I say, I hope I am wrong and yes it is quite an attacking line up so maybe we will pop a couple in by half time and put pay to my uncertainty.

Have to agree with you, Vegas. This has all the makings of a classic cup tie against lower-league opposition. Muddy pitch, understrength team, fired-up opposition, former manager gunning for glory. Going to be a tough afternoon.

Tough call for OG with the Burnley game being so important, but I notice Liverpool didn't rest Suarez at Bournemouth in the early game.

vegas i am entirely with you, i think it smacks of being above our station, i wouldn't be surprised if we got out, having put out this semi-reserve side. we should be showing the FA Cup and, more importantly, our fans far greater respect. i'd be so p!ssed off if i'd gone to Vale to watch. as it is i am p!ssed off about the team here in China!

Hope for the best but i fear the worst. UTA.

And on a pitch like today where injuries could easily be picked up how many would be complaining if experienced players were ruled out for tuesday ? Would love to get to next round but would prefer 3 points tues so this team for me is good choice and im sorry but with upson, calde, kemy and Orlandi there is plenty experience in team

I don't think it is a bad line up, as it gives some fringe players an opportunity. The bench is very strong, and can therefore help out if vale put us under pressure. Dammed if you do, and dammed if you don't.

Hi Vegas, Only a few changes from the Reading game really, and a couple of them came on as subs last round, Barnes and El-Abd sold, Crofts out injured, Greer rested instead of Upson and Ince instead of Andrews.
A strong defence, 2 big men in midfield, Orlandi as the creative player, Jfc reliable and March/Obika an unknown pair that could be the difference. If we fall behind Ulloa and LuaLua to come on and give us extra clout if needed, a positive team imo.

This match could turn out to be the, 'Obika show,' he might rip Vale apart but I think I would have started Andrews, just to give us a wise head in midfield, not sure Kemmy will do that, but it's the cup, who knows what might happen. I just hope that we don't end up chasing the game come half time.

Think people need to see bigger picture we are NOT going to win the cup but we do have a REAL possibility of making play offs and ultimately promotion so what is more important to you strong team today on boggy pitch possibly risking an injury or two or strong team Tuesday and hopefully pick up 3 points

yes pleased also to see march start.

why i think we should have a stronger team is that we could well go a couple more rounds and make plenty of money.

I take your well made point on board phumps but feel our long term interests might also be well served by winning and in this era of FFP getting a bit more money in the bank. Such additional funds might just help secure a key acquisition who in turn might help us get into the play-offs.
Anyway the die is cast. Hopefully Oscar has called it right and we will all be happy. UTA.
