Albion ace Macca makes brief return to action

The Argus: Craig Mackail-Smith launched his comeback at Brentford today Craig Mackail-Smith launched his comeback at Brentford today

Craig Mackail-Smith made a fleeting comeback for Albion today after ten months on the sidelines.

The striker played for the first 24 minutes of a 2-1 defeat for the development squad at Brentford.

The duration of Mackail-Smith's return was pre-planned. It was his first game time since rupturing an Achilles at Bristol City last March and then breaking an ankle during his recovery.

The Albion side also included midfielder George Cole, an 18-year-old trialist from Chelsea, and winger Jeffrey Monakana who was substituted in the second half of his second appearance since signing from Preston.

Brennan Dickenson put Albion ahead in the 41st minute. Charlie Adams equalised with a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Glenn Rea fouled him inside the box and Brentford won it 12 minutes from time with a goal which deflected in off Jess Starkey.

Albion: Smith; Deen, Dallison, Rea, Hunt; Cole; Monakana (Muitt 57), Asmundsson (Harris 72), Starkey, Dickenson; Mackail-Smith (Richards 24). Subs not used: Walton, Barclay.

Great to se him back in an Albion shirt but subbed after only 24 mins?? Hope that was just a precaution, not a aggravation of the old injuries. Fingers crossed!

Hey, it was pre planned. What do you expect after he's been sidelined for almost a year. A gentle reintroduction is all that's needed and we are hatdly going to push him hard in a U21 game!!

Great to see you making your comeback CMS. We've missed your boundless energy!

UTA!!

Yep, good to hear his first run-out went to plan. I guess he is still 3 or 4 weeks off returning to the first team squad?

Dear oh dear, when i read "Breaking news... Albion ace Macca makes brief return to action", i thought he'd gone and done himself another mischief and had to be carted off the pitch.

I'm obviously way too nervous about the state of our playing squad, and the Argus is obviously short of any real "breaking news", having told us this morning he'd be starting the match.

I would imagine it's all part of returning to fitness, a twenty four minute run out, then a full forty five, and so on, to build up stamina and strength.

Good to CMS getting some action however brief. He should be 'match fit' in time for the Wigan game 22 February possibly even in time for the Hull fixture.
Reverting to the question of signings I think we do need to strengthen the squad but only if those we sign do genuinely improve it. On the other hand looking to the future it wouldn't be a stupid strategy to sign some youngsters a la Ince and Chicksen.
My main concern is that we don't seem to have anybody who seems to be an obvious 'persuader'. This seems to be Burke's job and I am not sure if it is his strength - identifying targets & negotiating seem to be. As a result I am not convinced we will be signing the players we need in the next 4/5 days.
Apart from a replacement for Crofts, another striker/winger and another defender seem to be on the club's and most fans wish lists. Getting Conway back would be a step in the right direction but even that seems to be slipping away.
Trying to be patient isn't easy but the £90,000 we got for beating Port Vale ought to have at least increased our transfer budget a fraction making acquisitions more feasible.

Two quick points of the nit-picky variety.

Don't The Argus have a photograph of Craig Mackail-Smith from the last 12 months?!! He cut his hair a year ago!!!

And secondly, Jeffrey Monakana apparently wants to be known as Jeff Monakana. I'd have thought The Argus would've known this by now....a pail Camillin and Adam Tighe told us this a week ago at Seagulls Over London. Surely a reporter from the paper must have asked them about him in general and been informed of this as an incidental point at the time. He's been with us a few weeks now and already played in two DS games.
