Matt Upson celebrates after Albion's win at Port Vale on Saturday

Matt Upson has labelled the last few days of the January transfer window as crunch time for the rest of Albion’s season.

The former England centre-half expects the club’s dealings by Friday’s 11pm deadline to define the Seagulls’ chances of staying in the Championship promotion shake-up.

Unconfirmed reports in the North-East yesterday claimed Middlesbrough’s 25-year-old winger Muzzy Carayol has become the latest setback for Albion in their January transfer business.

Boro are thought to have rejected the Seagulls’ bid for their free-scoring Gambian wide man, who had a loan spell at Crawley earlier in his career.

Bournemouth’s top scorer Lewis Grabban decided to stay put and Albion also lost out to Millwall in attempting to sign versatile Irishman Shaun Williams from MK Dons.

Upson told The Argus: “I think the next few days are big for the club in terms of the destination we are going to end up in this season, really big.

“What ever their dealings are, who ever they are bringing in or not bringing in, it’s going to be interesting come the first of February to see what we have got to work with for the rest of the season.

“It is going to have a big bearing on where we are going to be able to finish in the League.”

Albion, currently eighth, are at third-placed Burnley tonight with a chance to climb back into the top six.

Upson said: “I think we are more than capable of finishing in the play-offs. It’s very tight with quite a lot of teams on similar points and in similar runs of form.

“But I look at some of the teams around us who we have played this season and I feel we are more than capable of finishing higher than them.”

Not another player in need of a morale boost of need signing(s ) !? You do surprise me ? If this winger at Boro has been approached what does this mean I wonder? Can we read that Buckley on his way too? Conway not coming back ? I know we have Solly but he must be seen by club as cover for the rest of this season for kaz and will. So it must be thought that Buckley is on his way with Liam.
It must also be said our man OG has obviously not got the contacts of Gus as seeing him busy signing players that were mentioned when he was with us.Also I thought there was supposed to be more value for money abroad? Hence our purchase of Leo ,Bruno,Spanish Dave
Indeed a defining last for days but have to say not inspired but all the players we have been linked with, turned down or not. If the youth is our future then another 5 yr plan required or maybe we will do a Fergie and win something with kids. Let's hope we can push for play offs as auto promotion not happening this season ,the gap is just to big ,and much as I hate to say it may be for quite awhile yet.

Yet another player obviously concerned about what is happening...or not happening! And why do they feel the need to question the club through the press?
Obviously something is not right here, how much did we bid for Carayol, was it just a token offer? If it is someone who the manager really wants then the club has to back him.
Come on sort it out!

Upson has been a fantastic signing for the Albion and obviously still very competitive and ambitious, clearly he wants to get back to the Premiership with the Albion and there's nothing wrong with his concern over the right additions to the squad. Whether we get there this season or in the near future is not an issue for me, we may loose some of the plastics that only want to see the big clubs playing at the Amex, I'm fine with that too.

As much as we love to know, i hope the club proceeds for the rest of this week without alerting the media to its every step. Someone, somewhere, is clearly dropping out information?
The list of players we've 'failed' to sign does look embarrassing although the truth is probably nothing of the sort and merely reflects the search process for most clubs. Enquiries happen all the time, it's just that ours are being talked about and when/if we do sign someone, the feeling will be they are 3rd/4th choice. That will not only be unfair, it's likely it'll also be wrong.
Perhaps it would help if someone from the admin side of the club moved to 'assure' supporters of the ongoing search? They don't have to confirm - or deny - names but it would fill a void that is currently being filled by player comment which sends out the wrong signals?

Agree with you, particularly your last paragraph. Someone from 'upstairs' should at least step forward and say something (without having to be too specific with names etc) just a few words of reassurance to the paying customers would seem to be in order. Their silence is deafening.

I have faith in Tony Bloom and Oscar Garcia, we will come good but do you know what if we don`t we will soon. The set up at the club is that of a premiership team in waiting and we will go up, no point in jumping up and down. I think Connor Wickham will come as a make weight for Bridcutt and maybe Buckley. Conway may or may not come, if not we are strong enough to make a go of the play-offs especially if we have CMS for the last couple of months. If not I believe with a summer to prepare Oscare will in us the league next season! UTA

The someone at the club is leaking information theory could well be rubbish.

Agents of players, to their media buddies, spread these - to gain trust and importance with 'journalists', but mainly to obtain even more lucrative contracts for their players (and more cash for themselves). Grabban and his agent did rather nicely out of the recent event.

I don't mind Upson and Andrews talking to the media about our transfer business. They are not whinging in the devious Poyet manner. Just expressing what many Albion fans are thinking - hope that we add to the depleted squad this week so that the season doesn't fizzle out early against a host of clubs who have invested in their squads.

Morning!
if you were alluding to my earlier missive about information being dropped out, I'd like to point out that I didn't suggest it was anyone at the club. I actually said: 'someone somewhere.'
You're perfectly correct to say there are many possibilities, which is why I was so vague, but for my own sanity, wanted to clarify that!
Where I do have a mild issue is the player story stuff, as genuinely innocent comments can be mis-interpreted - if not by the media, then certainly by the reader.

OG is not the "manager", he is Head Coach. As such, he doesn't have much say in who we buy, other than to identify in which positions he feels that the first team needs to be strengthened, and what kind of player.

Unlike a "manager", who gets on the phone to his contacts and talks to players to persuade them to come to his club. It's not like that at the Albion now. Shame, as OG played in the same team as Pep Guardiola, who now manages Bayern Munich, and was once himself Manager of Barca's youth set-up. We leave it to Barber and Burke instead.

An opportunity missed? A ridiculously rigid structure that serves us badly? I'd say so.
