Albion are closing in on Charlton midfielder Dale Stephens as a replacement for the injured Andrew Crofts.

The Argus understands a deal to take Stephens from South London to the South Coast is at an advanced stage.

Bolton-born Stephens, 26, is out of contract at The Valley at the end of the season.

He has been with Charlton since signing from Oldham in 2011 and Aston Villa tried to buy him two summers ago.

Charlton play at Doncaster tonight but it is unclear whether or not Stephens, who has scored four goals in 29 games this season, will be involved.

The Seagulls need to cater for the absence for the rest of the season of the free-scoring Crofts. Albion's energetic Welsh international suffered a ruptured cruciate keen ligament in the recent home game against Birmingham.

Probably right about NJ influence. I'm sure he's well known to him, though he's hardly a "big name signing"
I also see Harry has said Bobby Zamora can go if he wants. I reckon he'd come to us if we want him. A good pro, a legend down here.
Would give everyone a fillip !!!

Unbelievable the folks who comment here. Moans galore if there is no news and then moans when we are given an update on a possible deal because it might not happen. So what is it - no news or each possibility reported?

I am going with the latter.

This guy doesn't look like a Crofts replacement. More like a squad player if we get further injuries or need to rest players.

So true - we can do without the Argus posting videos of Dale Stephens' 5 greatest midfield passes. News and gossip is one thing, playing Grabber videos was completely ridiculous, unless we had signed the dude. BTW fratsomrover: Zomora is a legend, but is a now a complete sicknote. Come on you Seagulls - three points at Burnley!!

By now I'd guess that Oscar has had enough time to fully assess the three players you mention. Although there has been injury and fitness problems with them, I'm wondering if he doesn't particularly rate them, particularly in replacing Crofts

Different sorts of players surely. Agustien and Lopez are cultured players with a decent skill set and an ability to unlock a defence. Hardly world class tacklers. Would you go into a match with Agustien, Lopez and March? I don't think OG/NJ would. JFC is still young but lacks the power to be as combative as Crofts or even Barnes was. We need someone who can battle in midfield and then snatch the occasional goal.

Exactly.
A outfield team of Lopez/Orlandi's would be overrun and bullied out of games. The balance, especially in the British game, is to have some mettle/bottle in the tackle, in the team too. Crofts, Barnes & ElAbd all had that, and if Dale Stephens is as described then he will be good for us.

Looking at Charlton forums, they are gutted. One of their only 3 decent players according to some views, and they had already faced alleged interest from Aston Villa earlier this month in Stephens.
