Stephens seen as the man for Albion

The Argus: Dale Stephens played for Charlton last night Dale Stephens played for Charlton last night

Albion are closing in on Charlton midfielder Dale Stephens as a replacement for the injured Andrew Crofts.

The Argus understands a deal to take Stephens from South London to the South Coast is at an advanced stage.

Stephens was booked and substituted 11 minutes from the end of ten-man Charlton’s 3-0 defeat at Doncaster last night.

The Bolton-born 26-year-old is out of contract at The Valley at the end of the season.

He has been with Charlton since signing from Oldham in 2011 and Aston Villa tried to buy him two summers ago. The Seagulls need to cater for the absence for the rest of the season of the free-scoring Crofts. Albion’s energetic Wales international suffered a ruptured cruciate keen ligament in the recent home game against Birmingham.

Albion assistant head coach Nathan Jones told The Argus last night: “I know Dale very, very well (from his time at Charlton).

“It would be wrong for me to comment. Things are ongoing with the club in terms of targets.

“It would be wrong for me to comment on anyone. Those things will probably materialise in the next 24 to 48 hours and hopefully we will be in a strong position come 11 o’clock on Friday to kick on.”

Meanwhile, reports in the North East yesterday were linking Albion with Sunderland striker Connor Wickham as a makeweight in their hopes to land Liam Bridcutt and Will Buckley.

This guys sounds ok, will he bring goals to the midfield ?
While bridcutt and Buckley look likely to go, wick ham for me would be a Great swap, reading the Sunderland echo some seem to think he was never given a chance, and with 4 managers since joining from Ipswich, he has not had a steady ship either... Let's hope we get him on contract, only thing is will he take a drop in wages? Maybe Sunderland will give him a lump sum in the deal for him to go? Happy if we get the two .. We need to get TK signed

Unfortunately I doubt TK will sign unless we reach the EPL.

Stephens was only 24 yesterday. Not worth signing if he ages at that rate.

Don't agree. He's far more mobile and would offer something different. In my view, Obika is back up because he is a similar player. IMO Wickham would offer the "as well as" option not "instead of".

A genuine question for those of you who see the team on a regular basis. I get the impression from the little I've seen that, Bridcutt apart, our midfielders are all pretty 'samey'? If so, (?) can anyone confirm what Stephens is good at? I've no idea, apart from the Argus saying he's a replacement for Crofts. I'm sure we're not about to sign another jobbing squad player, so I'd love to know.

I understand what you are saying - a few of our midfielders are good tackling workers, but not the type to see and execute passes that take the opposition by surprise opening them up - Bridcutt, Ince, Agustien, Andrews.

But then Lopez and Orlandi do have that special creative ability. Not a good as Vicente, but he became injury ridden at the end of his career.

Not sure if a quality creative midfielder would want to come to a mid/top Championship team who are abiding with FFP, where there are PL and Championship clubs paying far greater wages.

Reading in the on-line version of the Daily Mirror that "Sunderland boss Gus Poyet will have to pay £4million to sign Will Buckley from former club Brighton. The Black Cats face competition for the winger from Crystal Palace." if that is true what will he need to pay for Bridcutt?

See that Poyet is bleating in the press this morning about Stoke's Mark Hughes tapping up his players. Is their no end to this man's sheer cheek?

The difference between Poyet and Hughes trying to buy players is that Stoke plays Sunderland tonight so the player can be influence by the other team interest, and in the other hand Brighton would not play Sunderland except if we meet them in the cup next round, so think carefully before making accusations please.

I don't know whether Dale Stephens is what we want but this is another player that is from Nathan Jones's past. Don't our scouts go to any other games?
I suppose we'll have to wait until the summer before we get any Oscar targets. UTA
