Transfer window watch: Albion could move for Spanish striker

The Argus: David Rodriguez David Rodriguez

Albion are considering a move for Celta striker David Rodriguez.

The former Atletico Madrid B-teamer is reported in Spain to be on his way to The Amex.

The Argus understands he is among the players interesting the Seagulls as they look to add to their firepower ahead of tomorrow's transfer deadline

Rodriguez, who has been on loan with Sporting Gijon and has played for Spain under-19s, missed training with Celta today.

The 27-year-old had a stint at Almeria in the season before they signed Leo Ulloa.

So are we getting excited about this possible signing because he is Spanish, or might be a Oscar target, or does anyone actually know about this player?

Watched those video links - interesting and unless my eyes deceive me he appears to be able to score with both fee t and his head. Not going to get too excited yet as there's been too much rumour coming to nothing this window. Having said I'll hope he is good and that he comes. As someone else says and bearing in mind LU - exactly the kind of player we like - and maybe s 'true' OG signing if it happens.

If you believe the Spanish rumors this is "virtually" a deal done & dusted! Only time will tell how ccorect they are & if my Spanish is as good as it used to be? Would be a useful signing even with Craig & Will slowly returning! No news on Will Buckley's proposed move, as yet?

Touche Old Gull. Fingers crossed if this report has substance.
Everything seems to be reaching a peak on the Transfer front.
Bridcutt looks likely to join Sunderland for circa £3 million which I would consider a minimum value for him. With the TV money for the Hull game plus the fees for Barnes, El-Abd and Barker we will have generated about £4.2 million recently.
With Stephens joining hopefully (I have doubts because of those reports saying he wants to move back North) some of that money will have been used up. That still leaves a sizeable fund to recruit a striker like Rodriguez to replace Barnes, a CB to replace El-Abd and to acquire Conway permanently. On the Conway front I wouldn't be surprised if we did a Loan deal with a view to signing him in the Summer. I would in addition quite like the Albion to secure Ward for the future before his Loan expires.
There is also a question over Buckley's future and were he to leave (looking less likely now Sunderland have signed Socco and with Johnson's recent form) then he would need replacing as well.
Burke and Co certainly seem to be working hard. Lets trust that their efforts bear fruit.
Interesting times with hopefully positive results.

Just a thought - this rumour surfaces after the LB sale is confirmed. Perhaps this has been in the melting pot until the club knows if and how much cash is available and stayed under the radar due to border control. Hope noone else spots him - especially Forest - they're signing anything that isn't screwed down!

This guys record at the top level in Spain looks very slim.
In his last five matches he has played just 128 minutes, producing one assist.

If you look at his second tier level stats, they are encouraging.
177 matches, 62 goals and 3 assists, the 3 assists seems very low, but the 62 goals looks good. Ulloa is an all out center forward, this guy is a center forward who can also play wide on either side, and that is why I think we want him. Price, around 650k to 850k..

To be fair, Brighton appear to be doing some canny deals. As much as some of you do not want to hear it, we are after Will Buckley. If that goes through as reported and the players are signed as above, then you will still have sufficient funds left over to purchase Aaron Wilbraham.........pl
ease buy him, please.

A promising sign, particularly as he's come here for talks and medical. Does that mean Connor Wickham drops out of the picture. I was quite excited at the prospect of getting him and some dosh in return for Bridders.
As Ince has gone to Palace I guess they are no longer interested in Buckley. Good, I dont want to lose him.
Finally I see Abdul Razak ( remember him) has been signed by Allardyce to rescue West Ham. Good luck to them, he was a proper prima dona when he played for us.

I have to think that we have one or two deals that have been sitting on the back burner just waiting for the Bridcutt deal to go thru, this Rodriguez deal was probably one of them. We bid for Stephens and Clayton, we do need a replacement for Crofts, but either one of them, if one comes, could be cover for a better acquisition, replace Crofts with a new player but who is cover for that new player. A straight replacement for Crofts would leave us without cover should the replacement get injured.

Rodriguez signing might see the end of our interest in Conway, Rodriguez can play wide on both sides and we have CMS coming back so we don't have to think of Rodriguez purely as cover for Leo. If Buckley not only stays, but also says fit, we could have Buckers on the right, Ulloa in the middle, Rodriguez on the left and CMS in the whole behind Ulloa using his pace to run at the defenders.

Yes, Crippled Alice won't need Buckers now. Think Will is off to Sunders though.

We were never in for Wickham by all accounts. I think Rodders has always been the first choice on the quiet (Oscar style) from the off. Let's hope he's guzzling tapas in The Laines by sundown tomorrow. I bet two hairs off Oscar's goatee he will be.

No worry - he doesn't need one - he's Spanish and not Argentinian like Leo. So no reason for delay only the usual FA International clearance.

Vegas - don't get carried away. When did we ever pick four goalscoring forwards in a starting line up! Would be exciting if it ever happened. Unfortunately I think CMS is the type of player to be on the last defenders shoulder rather than in the hole. You need someone with good technical ability and vision in the hole - and I am not sure he has either.

I think we will only consider Conway if Buckley goes. However if we get 2 or 3 good additions by the deadline I am sure most of us will be happy.

..yes and according to Wiki, Jordan Rhodes was our player in the 2012 transfer window!!

I think the reason we don't hear about our interest in overseas players is that they don't have English agents stirring up business in the UK press and media. It is easier to make discrete enquiries about foreign players who are playing abroad. I am sure this deal has been cooking for some time, subject to getting a satisfactory fee for LB.

Yes I need to reign it in a bit.

Leo, Rodriguez, CMS, Obika for now, and Hoskins getting fit, surely a sign of a more attacking pattern for the second half of the season. If we hold on to Buckley he too has to figure somehow.

Things seem to be warming up as this transfer window comes nearer to closing.
Albion have certainly reduced their players' wages bill plus pulled in some cash (with possibly more to come).
A couple of 'canny buys' and a remainder of season loan or two will put the club in a very strong position come the summer.
If W.B. goes for anything more than we paid Watford then that is good business. He has had some good games for us, but has been lacking something this season when he has been able to play.

Interesting stats VegasSeagull.
I looked on the transfer market website and they have a 'market value' ranging between Euros 875,000 and Euros 1 Million ie £730,000 and £830,000 at current FX rates.
Like Barnes he can play wide but you are right in saying that CF is listed as his main position. However he is not that tall 1.72 metres (5Ft 8ins) which might mean that he could play 'off' Ulloa. Being another Spaniard he should fit in and of course shouldn't have problems with a work permit. By the way he turns 28 on Valentine's day.
Could be the right sort of player to replace Barnes.

Hi Ballantrrae, yeah on paper he looks like a decent signing, and yes perhaps playing off Ulloa is the intent. As posted by another this morning, there is a report that his contract was torn up by Celta, we just might be getting him on a free, a free with a, 'hello,' payment.
I hope that this is a done deal and that we might also have Stephens sorted out in the coming hours. I would not be surprised to hear of another attacking mid field player joining us, in addition to Stephens, to me that would make sense.

Yes I agree we knew nothing.
The point behind my earlier comment was to highlight the fact that, 'this,' unknown player has the fans excited, but when we hear that the club is looking at players such as Stephens or the lad that went to Millwall, also players largely unheard of, the suits get a bashing.
I guess the Spanish connection makes this unknown more palatable.

Good points. I hope a fit, keen to play for us Will stays. He gives us something different, but seems to have had fitness problems since his Watford days. I guess any club wanting to buy him will have to carry out a thorough medical, although thats the norm anyway.I'll be sorry to see him and Liam go, as they've been my personal favourite players over the last couple of years or so (along with Leo), but I suppose we'll have a problem to hang on to any premiership standard players, at least until we get into that league.

the next 30 hours will be very exciting.
Morning Vegas ,i think the fact that we seem to agree this is most likely an Oscar signing ,is what makes all the difference in the world ,compared to the other possibles ,omo . UTA

God knows, looks like I had a brain ache at the time of writing, but if he is any good, we should sign him.

Not getting to carried away with this signing myself, 27 yrs old never heard of him either, are we going to change our whole approach to how we play! With ulloa, cms, obika and eventually hoskins back I can't see where he fits in. If he's around £500k could be a good buy but any more could be a big risk, like others have posted, barnes would look prolific on a best of video clip. I will wait to see what happens myself before making judgement on the fella. Cue thumbs down.

I was thinking only of the offer the club had received, not the nominal value placed on him, but yes.

Why the club rate him higher than Bridcutt is a mystery though. There are more speedy wingers around than there are defensive midfielders, but I guess attacking players always attract a premium.

Maybe in the last 5 games he wasn't mentally ready to play like someone else we used to know.

Price, around 650k to 850k..[/p][/quote]Interesting stats VegasSeagull. Inside Spainish Football web site states that David has left his club and joined Brighton!!
It's also stated that his contract is terminated so perhaps no transfer fee just wages to pay.

On BBC website he now appears on the squad list - no shirt number as yet. Seems to add some validity to him signing already then perhaps?
Not only that but it still shows LB as a squad member. All day I've been thinking, wouldn't it be funny if he failed his medical and couldn't be signed on time? Whatever happens now, we fans have been appeased. All we need now is some defensive cover, other than that, the squad is strong enough. Spanish Dave the second signed on a free, that will help our obsession with FFP rules. We have hardly spent a bean this season. Are we building a war chest for when we reach the promised land? I love this club, their is never a dull moment.

Stephens deal is confirmed so Crofts position is covered! Get the Spanish Dave 2 deal done and Buckley buzzing again, if he can get his head around still being a Brighton player. Get CMS and Hoskins fit and we have a squad good enough to focus on the playoffs or even 2nd place. What's to complain about it's going to be a ride!

If you think he is here to cover crofts , your having a laugh.... Crofts will struggle to get back in. This guy is ideal alongside ince.
