Transfer window watch: Rodriguez signs for Albion

The Argus: David Rodriguez David Rodriguez

Albion have confirmed the signing of former Celta Vigo striker David Rodriguez on a free transfer for the rest of the season.

Rodriguez fills the gap created by the sale of Ashley Barnes to Burnley earlier in the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old becomes the third new face at The Amex this month following the loan signing of fellow striker Jon Obika from Spurs and Charlton midfielder Dale Stephens.

Rodriguez cancelled his contract with Celta Vigo yesterday in order to facilitate his move to the Seagulls.

He will be available for Sunday's trip to Watford, subject to international clearance.

Albion's head coach Oscar Garcia said: "We wanted to add more competition to our striking options and David will bring that.

"He's shown throughout his career he is capable of scoring goals. He can play in all attacking positions.

"The challenge for him now is to push for a place in the team and prove between now and the end of the season he is worth a longer-term deal with the club."

Rodriguez has played for Celta, Almeria and Sporting Gijon during his time with Spain and moves to England with 38 career goals to his name in 112 appearances.

He seems to be a straight replacement for Barnes. Hopefully he will show enough throughout the remainder of the season to be given a longer contract. Fingers crossed!

Well if Rodriguez has to show that he is worth a longer contract, Oscar is going to have to give him enough playing time to do just that. The fact that this guy can play in the wide attacking positions as well as center forward, should give Oscar the option of using him as I doubt that Ulloa would be dropped from the line up just to make room for Rodriguez. His arrival should put pressure on Kaz and Buckley in the fight for starting places.

Happy with this,if he fits in well and starts performing I hope the club sort a contract before the end of the season. Bridders came on a free, and to sell him for circa 2.5-3 million is great business.

I wonder Vegas if Brightons Rodriguez might be given the same role as his Southampton namesake.... He hasn't done too bad.

Welcome to the the club David... Go make a name for yourself.

2 down (senior players) ?? To go.

Gutted about Conway btw. I thought the guy was excellent when he got fit.. He was definitely missed when he left.

That's two new players Burke and his team have secured in the last 24 hours - Stephens and Rodriguez.
Whilst Rodriguez is not tall, about 5ft 8ins (1.72 metres), he is reputedly quick and having more pace available up front is definitely a plus. Sounds a very different type of player to Ulloa. Good to see the Spanish connection continues to work.
With just over 8 hours till the window closes there should still be a chance for the Albion to acquire a defender and perhaps another midfielder (for Bridcutt but not a like for like type player).
I will keep an eye out to see who else Burke can sign today..

Yep I would have liked Conway to come in but looking at the Rodriguez signing maybe he will be the wide supplier of quality balls into the box. We are told that he has plenty of pace, his record of scoring goals at our level, second tier in Spain, is good so maybe the Conway interest fell away when we found out that Rodriguez might arrive. I don't think that his arrival was a new venture, I would guess that this deal was simmering for a while.

I see from the Argus Blog that they are not expecting any more transfer activity today.
Disappointed in some ways if that is the case as I was half expecting a replacement for El-Abd and another midfielder for Bridcutt but not a defensive midfielder given that Ince and Andrews can cover the defensive midfielder role.
Still feel the squad might be a bit light on numbers but realise that with the Loan window reopening in 8/9 days time that we can always make a couple of 93 day Loan signings then.
The good news is that having generated about £4.2 million by selling Bridcutt, Barnes, Barker and El-Abd and getting the Hull game TV money we have increased the war chest for the summer. Our only fee expenses being the rumoured £500,000 for Stephens, presumably a signing on fee for Rodriguez and the small fee for Monakana. In other words we should have around an extra £3.6 million for Oscar to invest for next season.
However I feel a little flat with no further acquisitions anticipated in the next 71/2 hours.

Ok guys.. as usual some people spouting before thinking. We have lost 3 players in this window. One of them is one we did all we could to hold onto.. The other 2 were not in our plans. Believe it or not - our plan is for the premiership... and we need players that can take us there and then do a job when in the prem. In January - you are NOT going to find prem ready players (as the prem teams are also trying to find them - with the buying power they have..) WE have to find the best we can.. at the price we can afford.. and most importantly on a contract that WORKS FOR US. This is why Stephens came to us..He is a quality player we were happy to pay for and hold on a long contract. This is why we did not get Conway. Yes he did us a job (on loan) but not the sort of player we see ourselves with in the prem (that is why we did not offer him a long term contract.. and Blackburn did) This actually says our immediate plans are more ambitious than that of teams like Blackburn, Charlton etc.. as we can pick and choose who we want for the long term.. The spanish striker confirms this.. He is on a deal until the end of the year and if it works out - then we will sign him.
So - we have 3 in and 2 strikers coming back from injury.. Unfortunately Crofts being injured makes things a little harder than anticipated.. but we are actually in a stronger position than we were at the begining of this window...

We shall see---but IMHO a good day so far. Perhaps more than we could have expected.

Good point re Oscar saying this morning he expected (hoped for ?) a busy day. Perhaps any other potential deals are more complicated or not working out. But as you say not a bad 24 hours and there is still time for both us fans and the Argus to be surprised.

Managers are now coaches, saying who they might want the clubs to go for, but these days there is too much money involved to let them handle the negotiations.
Dealing with some of these agents must be like playing water polo with crocodiles.

What is all this ranting (from the usual suspects!) that we haven't replaced El-Abd and Bridcutt. let's take the first one - who would want to come to the Albion to take AEA's place on the bench. We have Dunk who is capable, given good mentoring from MU and/or GG and if that is not possible then we should recall Maksimenko from Kilmarnock. If neither of them are good enough then we should look very carefully at the message we are sending out about the DS and whether anyone should consider joining the multi-million pound academy. Why bother? There's obviously no future there...! And as for Bridcutt, step up to the plate Rohan Ince. This is the moment to make yourself a legend - and I for one think you will.

So I think the xfer activity is more or less over for us. And I see some are patting the Burk on the back for bringing in Rodriguez... Ha ha! I bet he didn't know a thing about it until Rod walked in to the office at the Amex...!!!

Ha ha! I bet he didn't know a thing about it until Rod walked in to the office at the Amex...!!![/p][/quote]Spot on,am personally happier now than a week ago.. But still not sure Burke up to the job ,or perhaps i still believe it is totally up to the manager to choose ,interview , entice the players he wants , not this system we seem to have. hayho time will tell. Is there anyone who still thinks OG and Burke don't talk to each other regarding potential signings?

The Evening Standard is reporting that Palace offered £2.5m for Will Buckley yesterday but that we weren't keen unless there was a decent replacement available.
