Albion striker targets FA Cup comeback

The Argus: Craig Mackail-Smith in action against Crystal Palace at Culver Road last night Craig Mackail-Smith in action against Crystal Palace at Culver Road last night

Craig Mackail-Smith has set his sights on an FA Cup comeback for Albion after taking another step on the road to recovery at Lancing last night.

The striker played for 50 minutes in a 3-2 victory for the development team against Crystal Palace at Culver Road.

It was Mackail-Smith’s first home appearance for ten months after Achilles and ankle injuries.

He more than doubled the game time he was given on his comeback at Brentford last week and, although he is reluctant to put a precise timescale on his first team return, would love to be involved in the FA Cup fifth round tie against Hull at the Amex on February 17.

Mackail-Smith said: “I want to play on Saturday (Doncaster) but I’m not allowed! There is another development game on Monday against Bournemouth, so I think I’ll be involved in that.

“I would like to play against Leeds (February 11), because I score against them all the time but I don’t think I’ll be involved in that.

“It’s just a case of doing bits and pieces, playing with the development team and then it will be down to the gaffer and physios to decided when the time is right.

“We’ve got four home games in a row, so it would be nice to nick into one of them. I enjoy the FA Cup and it’s on TV, so it would be nice to get a return then.”

Barry Fry, father of Mackail-Smith’s partner Amber, made the journey from Peterborough to see Mackail-Smith in action.

The former Posh marksman did not see much of the ball in a first half dominated by Palace but he set up Brennan Dickenson’s sweetly struck equaliser and decided to gain a few more minutes game time at the start of the second half following a 24-minute comeback at Brentford last week.

Mackail-Smith said: “It was nice to have a bit of a longer run and test things. I felt pretty good. I was a little bit fatigued so had to come off.

“We've got a game plan with the amount of time I am playing. I still didn’t get anywhere near a shot! That’s almost 90 minutes now without a shot, so I am a bit frustrated about that, but it’s coming. I can feel the sharpness slowly returning."

Great to see Macca as enthusiastic as ever, but at 29 he needs to follow the programme, we need him back fully fit in the next 2-3 weeks.

Orlandi Augustien brez chicksen Obika Greer/Lopez on the bench based on recent performances.

Good post, I'd agree with that team but you know it won't happen !, what probably will happen is :
Kuz, Bruno, Greer, Upson, Ward, Stephens, Andrews, JFC, Lopez, Orlandi, Ulloa !
Usual, slow defensive tactics and players not performing, didn't OG say if players played well enough they keep the shirt, clearly that wasn't the case with AEA was it, surely the converse should be true, if you don't play well enough then you get dropped ? So bbb1969's team is the one I'd go for, but what do we fans know.

Ha ha . I do coach and even if I didn't then most of us fans agree with a more attaking formation. What do we have to lose? However as mentioned above the team will not happen so I guess we will never know.
Watford game saw lua lua and March winging it and Ulloa and Rodders up front. Looked a very good last 10 mins for me and would it not be better to start really good and attack and get on the score sheet then end good desperately chasing the game.
To be clear and as a coach; you study the opposition last 2-3 games, understand their weaknesses, pick your squad taking into account the opposition changes that they will make to strengthen. However if like Brighton you play the same formation every game then at some point other teams will see this and come at us with the same gameplan.
Don't want to lose games but would rather lose knowing this is the best possible team for the current opposition.
4-4-2 some games, 4-3-3 others; I would even like 3-5-2.

The Albion line-up is too fluid to be called any particular formation. 4-3-3, 4-5-1, 4-1-2-2-1... they all happen each match, even 4-1-3-2.

We're not giving OG a fraction of the credit he deserves.

It's a good job fans don't manage teams. Almost as bad as Club Chairmen managing teams. However, no harm in us all playing fantasy football between games. For me it is more about how the team sets up and performs and how quickly they move the ball about, rather than the formation.

I am not the greatest fan of OG, but he has had a lot to contend with and with a couple of wins we can still be in a good position. Good to see CMS on the verge of the first team squad again.

As we all indulge in a bit of fantasy league it was nice to see a snippet of real news sneak out almost unnoticed overnight. Joe Kinnear has lost his job as Director of Football at Newcastle. Yet another one gone - there are fewer and fewer cluttering up clubs. Any chance TB is keeping an eye on developments around the country...? Here's hoping. In the meantime Macca, good luck with the return to fitness... Fingers crossed. UTA.

Even if we had your line up and replaced U and R with Suarez and Pele in his prime, we would still struggle with 4-4-2, as it's our "midfield" that's the problem - with their lack of creativity and confidence. OG is working with the players at his disposal, and the fluid formation is probably a better call. The players need to pull their fingers out.

That had more to do with Joe Kinnear doing absolutely nothing in the role, rather than a problem with the role itself. Right job, wrong (VERY wrong) person.

I am happy to take on any debate about formation and it is correct the players need to ppull their fingers out but it would be better if we start with the right players. If they are not pulling their fingers out then change them. Changing the formation forces the players to play in a certain way. 4-1-4-1 is ok defending but the team picked against Watford did not include March or Lua lua so 4-1-3-2 did not exist and agree with the comments about fluidity.
I will be there at the next few games nontheless and hope to see some changes but if not I will still be shouting and getting behind the lads. At some point though we will need to do something if we do not get any results.
