Oscar Garcia wants Albion to borrow their way back into promotion contention.

The Seagulls’ head coach is eager to bolster his squad during the loan transfer window, which opens today.

Oscar’s bosses have pledged to back him in the loan market, in spite of the club’s near-£15 million loss last season and the constraints of Financial Fair Play rules.

Albion already have defender Stephen Ward and injured midfielder Keith Andrews on season-long loans, plus striker Jonathan Obika for 93 days.

Oscar is keen to add to the tally after missing out on targets in January but fears it will be tough for Albion to compete with some of their big-spending Championship rivals. Ths Spaniard told The Argus: “I want to strengthen the squad from the start but the club has a structure and sometimes it’s difficult to compete with other clubs for certain players. “But this is the philosophy of the club and we have to manage as best as we can.”

Ninth-placed Albion host sixth-bottom Doncaster Rovers today hoping to reverse a trend this season of better results against teams at the top than those towards the wrong end of the table.

The Seagulls have not beaten any of the current bottom four and have lost or drawn at the Amex against Doncaster’s fellow strugglers Barnsley, Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday.

Oscar said: “This is one of the things we have to improve, to be better against these kind of teams. The biggest problem is if we don’t score then they can sit back and only defend.

“If we score in the first 15 minutes then they have to play differently.

“I expect a tough game, like all the games here, because every team is playing for something. We must be focused and we have to start the game well. With the support of the fans we are confident about picking up the three points.”

Jake Forster-Caskey has a fighting chance of being involved. The hamstring injury which forced the midfield teenager off in the first half of Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Watford is not as bad as feared.
