Walsh: It was right to stay at Crawley

The Argus: Joe Walsh turned down a big-money move Joe Walsh turned down a big-money move

Joe Walsh insists he had no hesitation in turning down a big-money move on deadline day to stay at Crawley.

The Wales under-21 international was the subject of two bids during the January transfer window with Reds rejecting an initial offer of £400,000 before Walsh committed his future to Crawley when the club accepted an improved offer on Friday.

Reds boss John Gregory – who strengthen his squad yesterday by signing Crystal Palace duo Hiram Boateng and Sully Kai Kai on loan –believes the 21-year-old has the potential to play in the Premier League in the future and Walsh is confident that remaining at the Checkatrade.com Stadium can help him achieve that ambition.

Walsh said: “I am happy here at Crawley so I didn’t want to move anywhere. I’m still young so I’m not in any rush to leave.

“It doesn’t really bother me that I would have earned more money. I just want to keep playing football and improving and I see Crawley as the best place for me to develop as a player.

“I’ve come on leaps and bounds since I joined Crawley (from Swansea in August 2012) and hopefully I can continue to improve. The gaffer (Gregory) is very experienced and has managed at the top level so I think he can help me get better.

“It was flattering when a club offer a lot of money for you but I’ve still got a long career ahead of me so there is no need to jump into these things. We’ll see what happens further down the line but right now I think Crawley is the best place for me.”
