Talking point: What is Albion's best team now?

The Argus: Solly March in action for Albion at the Amex today. Picture by Simon Dack Solly March in action for Albion at the Amex today. Picture by Simon Dack

Albion’s win over Doncaster was not perfect but it ended a run of three league games without a victory and there were some impressive performances.

Solly March, particularly, staked a claim for a more regular starting spot and Rohan Ince also shone on his return from injury.

Transfer deadline signings Dale Stephens and David Rodriguez both made their home debuts, showing some nice moments at times.

The likes of Kazenga LuaLua, David Lopez, Kemy Agustien and Jonathan Obika had to be content with places on the bench while Keith Andrews, Jake Forster-Caskey and Will Buckley were all out injured.

With everyone fit and with Liam Bridcutt having moved to Sunderland, what is now Albion’s best starting XI?

Would like to see Leo and Spanish Dave 2 given a run to see of they can strike up a partnership, yesterday was promising. Like the fact that Solly can take on and beat his man, final ball needs work, Stephens.....probabl
y needs time to settle, but he will be important, Kaz used as impact sub, as doesn't seem to be able to play 90 without getting injured, Incey now a definite, back four as yesterday ( great cross from Wardy for the goal ), and one from Orlandi, Andrews and Buckley ( when fit ), with Kemy, Dunk, Kaz, Obika, David, Calde and Brez on the bench. CMS, Crofty and Hoskins to come back......the squad looks good, don't think we need anyone else, and if we beat Leeds and Wigan, then we're right back in it.

And therein lies the problem. We don't know and in all probability Oscar doesn't know either.

Back five almost picks itself although GG looking a little wobbly of late. With our relatively slow central defence we have to play the holding midfielder which has to be Ince or Andrews. Ulloa has to play.

So the problem is the four 'offensive' midfielders. One of the wider players must be able to get forward quickly and support Leo so that's got be either Buckley or Rodriguez starting. Maybe both? But then you can't afford the luxury of March and KLL - and they are the only two players that get us out of our seats at the moment.

Got to have two players in the centre of midfield or we'll get overrun - ideally a ball winner and a creator. With Crofts out seems Stephens is a must. So just the creator left - pick any one from Agustien, Orlandi, JFC, and Ince or Andrews depending which one isn't playing the holding role.

Who'd be Oscar right now?!

Seems to me that until we can recruit a pacy, solid, ball playing centre back we HAVE to play 4-1-4-1 to protect the defence. Any talk of 4-4-2 is pie in the sky until then.

And is Oscar really going to drop the captain at this stage of the season? Can't see it.

Priority signings - centre back and creative midfielder.

Almost impossible to determine but a couple of points. I assume Orlandi was taken off to preserve fitness and make sure he was there for a stern test on Tuesday. I thought he was becoming influential in the second half and was sorry to see him go. He is critical to our chances of making the playoffs as is LuaLua who simply frightens defences. My only worry at the moment? Greer.

The question was the best line up NOW so regret will have to rule out Crofts until next season.
Kuz and back four as yesterday.
Ince
March Stephens LuaLua
Rodriguez
Ulloa
Subs.Brez Orlandi Lopez Agustien Dunk Calde Obika.
If Buckley was fully fit I would put him in as sub and drop Lopez altogether.

I'm still advocating building a team around Andreas Orlando with one other winger and attacking player (midfield or striker) with Leo up top. Utilising a 4-2-3-1 formation. For home games I would currently go for Kus - Bruno, Greer, Upson, Ward - Ince, Stephens - Rodriguez, Orlando, LuaLua - Ulloa. Away from home switch Calde for Bruno and March for Kaz, with CMS for Rodders when Craig is back fit. I'm liking the fact that Solly can fill in the central attacking midfield role when asked too.

Excellent debate chaps, it is really difficult at the moment as we have a bunch of injuries, a bunch of players coming back from long term absence, and let's be honest a bunch of very similar so/so players. I think you could pick a range of different teams with similar attributes.

What we could do with is some players who can be multi tasked. Aren't we being a bit limited to consider a midfielder either Creative , or a ball winner? Doesn't Ince have the potential to be both? Can't players like David and Orlandi learn to tackle? :) Do we really need 2 defensive ball winners in the midfield?

I agree with the posters above, incl. Gazza, who say what we appear to be missing is a good young fast central defender , and a creative midfielder (assuming we don't think Orlandi, Augestein, or even March will be able to fill that role).

Also a word for the defensive attributes of Lua Lua. When I've seen him play he often does a fair amount of tracking back, ball winning and tackling. He is more than simply an impact player.
