Stephens: We need to keep Leeds hitman quiet

The Argus: Dale Stephens Dale Stephens

WHEN Dale Stephens says keeping Ross McCormack quiet will give Albion a good chance of beating Leeds tonight he is speaking from painful experience.

The Seagulls’ new midfielder has already tasted first hand the finishing prowess of the top scorer in the Championship.

Four of McCormack’s 22 league goals this season came in one game, when Stephens was in the opposition for former club Charlton at The Valley in November.

The memory of that 4-2 defeat is still fresh in the mind of the 24-year-old Lancastrian ahead of his third outing for Albion against the Yorkshire giants this evening.

Stephens said: “I remember McCormack putting four past us. Obviously on a personal note I’ll be looking to put that right. He is their focal point, their main man, and I am sure if we keep him quiet we’ll have a good chance of winning the game.

“It’s a massive game. They are another contender for the play-off spots, like ourselves. They are a good side. We’ve got to make the most of these home games coming up, starting tonight.

“If we make the most of these next two home games it will leave us in a great position.”

I'm not sure that bodes too well for tonight but here's Dales opportunity to make amends! I'm happy enough (in fact, very happy) with Upson but Greer will need to be on top of his game to keep McCormack shut out and short of opportunity.

UTA!

Better still than keeping Ross quiet ,it would be a good idea if we sarted taking 50% of our chances ,last season and this has been simmilar in that respect. Albeit we played consistently better at hm last season.
Lets match that leicester game for desire and would take the same result.

What, like no other team in the world has ever done? Good luck with that.

wow 50%, now that would be special, but I am sure that you didn't mean exactly that.
I don't think that, 'shots on goal,' can all be called, 'chances,' many are, 'attempts.' There are very few real clear cut chances to score in a match, one on one with the keeper, a clear header from a set piece or pouncing onto a rebound off the keeper or defender. Convert 50% of clear cut chances would probably see us score 2 goals in every match, still a big ask.

Good grief. Gus is back.

I know you loved it here and we all understand that you'd have loved to stay, but take a deep breath Gus and move on. Might I suggest the Sunderland Echo?

We loved you once Gus, but relationships change. We've moved on and so must you. Remember that there are laws against harassment.

I remember when we played Portsmouth at the Goldstone. Pompey's best player was a fella called Paul Walsh. Our tactic against him was for Steve Foster to stamp on his ankle on the half way line at a goal kick. He was substituted injured after 9 minutes.
It may not be the sporting thing to do, but in all honesty I want to win and care little how we do it. Sharpen up those studs Gordon.
