Former Sussex captain Chris Adams insists Mark Robinson has all the credentials to be the next England coach.

Limited overs coach Ashley Giles remains favourite to be given the task of rebuilding the Test side following their Ashes whitewash this winter and the fallout from Kevin Pietersen’s controversial sacking.

But Adams, who combined with Robinson to guide Sussex to two County Championship titles and the C&G Trophy, says Robinson deserves serious consideration if the ECB decides they want a complete change.

Adams said: “Mark has done an excellent job at Sussex. England would be a big step up but I would put him in a group of very talented English coaches who would benefit from having a crack at the job.

“You don’t know until you do such a high pressure job how they will cope but Mark has clearly got the credentials for the job and the fact he is with the England Lions shows how much the ECB think of him.

“There are four outstanding candidates in my opinion. Ashley Giles looks the favourite as he is in the role already and if things go well over the next couple of months he is almost certain to get the job.

“It would be great to see (former Sussex coach) Pete Moores given another crack at it and then there is (Nottinghamshire coach) Mick Newell who, like Mark, has got a County Championship title under his belt.”
