Matt Upson believes Albion can go “all the way” in the FA Cup.

The Seagulls attempt to claim another Premier League scalp against Hull City in the fifth round at the Amex tonight.

They dumped Newcastle out of the competition in each of the last two seasons and Upson insists they are capable of extending their run beyond a first quarter-final appearance since 1986.

The former England centre-half said: “We can go all the way, why not? There’s no point us thinking otherwise, or else don’t turn up for the tie and we all stay at home.

“We can win and we can keep winning. It’s a one-off game and on that day or night anything can happen.”

Upson has drawn inspiration from Wigan, the next Championship visitors to the Amex on Saturday. They shocked Manchester City in the final last year when they were relegated from the Premier League.

He said: “The cup’s the cup and that is the beauty of the competition. That’s what makes it so exciting and historically such a great thing to play in. It’s a great opportunity for the club to have a cup run. We’ve drawn Premier League opposition, I don’t regard ourselves as being a million miles away from Premier standard and we’re at home so it will be a great tie.”

Upson, 34, asked to play in Albion’s fourth round win at Port Vale after he was rested for the win in round three at home to Reading. He said: “You never know when it’s going to be the last time you play in the FA Cup. I’ve said it before but the older you get, the more you appreciate and respect the competition. I absolutely love it.

“I remember as a kid that when you throw the jumpers down and play football in the park, it’s the FA Cup final that gets mentioned, you don’t play for the league.”
