Dunk gets the thumbs up

Lewis Dunk

Lewis Dunk

First published in Sport by

Inigo Calderon has hailed defensive sidekick Lewis Dunk for grabbing his chance to shine.

The 22-year-old centre-back Dunk was particularly impressive as Albion drew 1-1 with Premier League Hull City in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Monday.

It was a rare outing for Dunk who has found himself a peripheral figure in the squad for the last 18 months.

After being sent off after eight minutes at Crystal Palace in December 2012, the home-grown talent has featured in just two Championship games for Albion – once when he was substituted after 39 minutes against Millwall later that month and then as an 89th-minute substitute at Nottingham Forest last March.

With Adam El-Abd joining Bristol City, where Dunk had a loan spell earlier in the season, he has started Albion’s last two Cup ties against Port Vale and Hull.

And Calderon, who skippered the team against Hull, believes Dunk has shown he is more than capable of playing more regularly if required.

He said: “It is really important that everybody trains hard because when you have the chance, you have to perform like Lewis did.

“He was perfect, spot-on with the ball. It is not easy when you are so young and you have to take responsibility with the ball but he did so well.

“To be fair he didn’t surprise because I know him and I know what he can do.

“That is important for us that everybody is ready to play when called upon.”

He did play well, but don't want to put too much pressure on the lad - there are going to be future games where mistakes happen.
The main point is that he goes about his business with an air of confidence, and without being overtly pacy he covers ground with deceptive ease.
Timely and forcible interventions reminded me of a young Lawrenson, or Gary Stevens.

I agree. This article is more about Calde's importance as team member and mentor to the younger players. I hope he stays with the club in some capacity for many years.

Lewis seems to have filled out a bit, was not knocked off the ball and had a brilliant game gelling so well with Mattie. Considering how much game time he gets it proved how talented he really is. Perhaps he will get more chances as the season goes on.

Wonder if Mattie has any coaching qualifications yet? Clearly he loves the game and one feels he could go on to be a top manager.

Calde and Dunk will have more work to get thru come the replay with Hull and with Bruno now fit to play, and one would expect Greer to start against Wigan, we are lucky to have such able deputees. Ward in against Wigan and Chicksen in against Hull, seems logical. My concern is Upson, I don't see how we have any option other than to play him in both games. We all talk of how important it is to have Ulloa on the field, but for me Upson is every bit as important. I confess to being a tad surprised that the management team have not taken action to secure cover for both Greer and Mattie, Dunk is our only cover. It appears that the club is taking a big gamble on neither center backs getting injured, I don't like that bet, and looking to Upson to play two vital matches in a little more that 48 hours, makes the bet look even worse.
Ulloa will play against Wigan, and there will be calls for him to play on monday too, and like asking Upson to play two in 48, to me this could be a risk. Unlike the Upson situation we do have cover up front, now you may question the quality of that cover but at least we have it. I just want to see these next two matches over and done with, and for Upson and Ulloa to come thru unscathed.

for me dunk will play both and greer and upson will split the other 2 games between them also id be tempted to play rodders up on his own on monday as wewill need to be quick on the counter

What pure rubbish. My god his family have some power down this neck of the woods.Every national paper had him 100% at falt for their goal.Thats against Hulls lower league second choice strike force lets not forget. He was also 100% to blame for Portvales goal when he lost the guy Robertson.Lets not forget Hull hit the bar twice in the first half and Dunk was all over the place.Once Hulls second choice strikers worked out to run at him it was the same old Dunk.Like Bridcutt said god help them next season without TK,and Upson. The club is going to try and save even more money next season by going with Brez, and Dunk.He also thinks Leo and Buckley will be sold to Palace in the summer if Palace stay up that is.

What pure lies.Bristol didn't want him back i think you will find. The Albion wanted to save money because they can see season ticket sales will be down next season. So they asked Bristol if they would take El-Abd.Believe me Adam was not happy about it.Just 9 of his friends and family out of 21k fans lol.If such a good player Poyet would have come and got him with Bridcutt.Watch it again on utube he ends up on his backside for their goal, and it almost happens again straight after.

Jealousy is a bad trait freeloaders.
Were you a failed centre half in your youth?
Your dislike of Dunk is obsessive which makes it slightly disturbing.

You need to stop stalking him and get a life.

You need to get the life sad man.I can go off this site for mths and don't care one bit.I have a wonderful family life, and a great job in football still.Just 10 posts about your son from some 28 thousand fans. Now who looks stupid HA lol.The Express printed the next day a very poor game, and a very poor crowd.Even tho the club was giving away tickets for just £15 & £5 there was empty blue seats all over the ground. This in a game for a place in the last 8 of the FA,cup. It was clear the players cared no more than the fans that didn't turn up.What a great match report.I was at the game and it was pure rubbish. There was even some kids crying to their parents after it was so bad.Anyway you will all soon change your minds when there is no TK,Upson,Buckley,or Leo next season.

Thats right the club has no money but lets give every ex-player a free job for life.Thank god you people don't work for the club. Some of you people really do believe these players are your friends, and that they are real fans of the club.Like Bridcutt point out Buckley wanted the move to CPFC but the club blocked it last min.Which we all know true from the Argus.Like he also pointed out last summer in Rottingdean TK won't sign again, and Upson won't get a knew deal. The club will save money and go with Brez & Dunk.Plus hope to get big money from Palace for Leo if they stay up.The Argus has just been told to sell the fans Dunk because its a done deal and always was.Just like the training ground was.The masons run this country and only the most stupid don't see it.

Agreed Dunk is not the answer as back up central defender, all over the place on Tuesday night thank goodness we had Upson. I had more confidence in El-Abd. Probably do a reasonable job in Division 1 or 2. We need to strengthen in that department during the summer to cover for aging Upson and Greer.
