Tomasz Kuszczak has backed Albion’s new signing Jesse Lingard to help end their shyness in front of goal.

The Seagulls have not scored more than once in any of their last 12 matches in all competitions against Championship and Premier League opposition.

Keeper Kuszczak, who was with Lingard at Manchester United, expects the versatile loan capture to add a new dimension to Albion’s attacking efforts at Millwall today and to lighten the load on Leo Ulloa.

Kuszczak told The Argus: “When I was there he trained with the second team and one or two times with the first team. I remember him and he was always from the beginning a young player who you could see has big potential.

“He knows how to keep the ball. He runs a lot and is skillful with the ball and he has got the pace you need up front.

“Everyone knows that in this division if you want to go up to the Premier League you have to have two or three players that score goals, not only one.

“We have to keep working on the goal record because we just score one goal, that’s it. Everyone is waiting for Leo to score but we need more people to put the ball in the net.

“Jesse is young and he is going to try to show himself and take a chance, maybe have the vision to put the ball in the net and make the whole team feel better.”

The only time Albion have scored more than once in a game since Boxing Day was in the 3-1 FA Cup win at League One Port Vale, their first three-goal haul since early December.

Kuszczak added: “I always say if we score one and we are 1-0 up and defend for thirty minutes there’s always a risk you may lose a goal. If we score two it’s more comfortable, three it’s pleasure.

“You know then if something happens we’ll still take the points. That’s why we need to score more goals and definitely that’s why he (Lingard) is here. It’s not going to be easy for him, because he doesn’t know the players, he doesn’t know the tactics, but we will see what happens.”

Rumour that Obika may not be in the squad today but with Ulloa, Lingard, KLL, March and Buckley maybe he would struggle to make the bench.
