Midfield worries for Albion

The Argus: Rohan Ince has not yet returned to training Rohan Ince has not yet returned to training

Albion have central midfield concerns for Reading’s visit on Saturday.

Rohan Ince has still not returned to training after missing the 1-0 win at Millwall with an ankle injury sustained in the FA Cup at Hull eight days ago.

Andrea Orlandi is also under treatment for a thigh injury.

Keith Andrews will make his first home start in the Championship for eight weeks if Ince fails to recover and Jake Forster-Caskey is on standby to replace Orlandi.

Will Buckley is in full training. The winger has suffered no reaction to his hamstring problems after his appearance at Millwall as a second half substitute.

Fingers crossed for Ince and Orlandi, they would both be massive losses for such a big game,Andrews in the holding role, although a poor replacement for Rowan, with Stephens,March,Buckl
ey and Lingard.

Interesting choices for OG , can he fit Buckley and Jessie in same 11?
Not good news on ince, at a push Calderon might play the holding role..
When I read the headline I thought this is step up kemy time, but he looks out of contention.
I suppose a loan move for a holding centre mid could be on? I have to also wonder about having three central defenders, not really ideal if we are chasing a play off spot.
Saturday looks like a cracking game... Reading will come to win.

Perhaps it's time to stop playing so defensively and go for the jugular straight from the off, give reading such a shock they won't know what's hit them!

Worth giving Solly March his head in central midfield (if he is fit)? Have a feeling that will be his eventual best position.

I agree. if we don't have our best defensive midfielders available then there is no point trying to play defensively in midfield. Besides, we have a very good defense and keeper, so we should be prepared to ro risk a more attacking midfield.

However if Orlandi is also unfit we'll probably have to pick Andrews anyway, and have Stephens next to him:

Kuszczak

Ward- Upson-Greer-Bruno

Andrews-Stephens

Lingard-David/March

Ulloa-Buckley

With Wigan not playing, we have got to beat Reading by 5 clear goals to go into the top six. A repeat of the 6-1 thrashing we gave Blackpool last year would be very timely.

I no thumbs down coming but!!
This seems to be reported before every game lately.
Always have the headline 'Worries for Albion'
does not seem to matter where on the pitch forward, backs or midfield there is always 'Worries for Albion'
As a pro football club we should not have these worries there should be players ready to step up and grab there chance!
One day maybe Andy will be able to write 'NO worries for Albion as we go into this crucial game!!!

Andrews, when arriving at the club was seen as cover/replacement for Bridcutt, it is only the somewhat surprising rapid claim to the position by Ince that has changed. We can trust Andrews to do what needs doing against Reading, along with Stephens.
If Orlandi is also out David can fill that spot, a choice I might actually prefer ahead of JFC. Jake, on the bench, offers cover and options as the match progresses, possibly more so that David does. David is also our penalty taker.
Buckley, Lingard and Ulloa should be able to occupy Reading's defense, and we can add the threat that Stephens offers.

With Solly, JFC and Rodriguez on the bench we will have some options.

If Rohan Ince is not available I would like to see Lewis Dunk given another chance at the back and push Matthew Upson forward to the holding midfield role. With his distribution ability and his vast experience I think he would fulfil that role well.

Wow what an interesting idea, one that is worthy as one of my, 'out of the box,' musings. I can see the attraction but having all of our center backs on the park at the same time would worry me, as always an injury issue to consider.
Would Upson have the required pace to adopt that role?

If you want to try a defender there then Calde would be a better option.

Calderon in the holding midfield role would worry me. He goes rampaging forward too often for that role and we might finish up being very exposed. I stick with my original idea with Calde being our reserve centre back. He has performed there quite well before. We also have a useful centre back in the under 21 team by the name of Rea. I think he is their captain.

Why not try Bruno in that position, he has played on the right side of midfield before so a move into the centre should not prove a step to far!

I know I could be accused of being in the "we've always lived in caves"category but Bruno has played there in his 1st season and was a disaster.

Really bad news about Ince. As I said before when he pulled up it looked like a baddy. His power against a powerful side will be badly missed. A game changer I reckon, we are far too lightweight in midfield. Stephens is not up to much, Andrews distribution is hopeless, David lacks power and all of them will get a game. We are in serious danger of being overwhelmed on the day. It's all well and good to say go for all out attack but in order to you have to have and keep the ball.
