Albion talking point: Who would YOU play at the back against Ipswich?

The Argus: Suffolk boy Matt Upson is available to face Ipswich Suffolk boy Matt Upson is available to face Ipswich

Lewis Dunk has stated a claim for continued involvement in Albion’s defence as they chase a play-off spot.

But he faces a real battle to keep his place when Ipswich come to the Amex on Saturday.

Gordon Greer (suspended) and Matt Upson (ill) have each missed a match of late.

But the experienced duo are both fit and available to compete for a place.

Oscar Garcia has a decision to make. But who would YOU play at the back?

Greer and Upson. I agree with the phrase "if it ain't 't broke" etc. Also Greer is club captain. I am also aware of the phrase if you are playing well then keep the shirt but Lewis is one for the future without doubt and I hope he does not feel the same way that AEA felt so his time will come in the not too distant future bearing in mind the ages of Greer and Upson.

I had Dunk down to play last Saturday instead of Greer, then Upson fell ill, so no difficult decision for Oscar. However, this Saturday, as Greer played successfully last Saturday after his ban, I would resume the partnership that has served us well of Greer and Upson. Dunk is quicker than Greer we know, but I'm definitely going for experience now at a critical time. I have no doubt at all that Oscar will play Greer.
Dunk will come to the fore next season and will still feature I'm sure this season. Very pleased with his re-emergence.

Greer and Upson definitely, Bruno is fairly dependable if a little unconvincing at times, there is a case for Dunk although his 'blotting of his copy book' shall we say, still leaves a bit of a sour taste. A real shame he couldn't have kept his nose clean because he showed real promise as a top class defender. Maybe just more time needed and some growing up to do but if he can just focus on his career then he'd be on the team sheet every game.

Consistency is what managers look for and in our back five that's what we have. Fans often complain of changes being made to a line up that won the previous match, they want consistency. I am not sure why we would even contemplate change at the back. Look at the number of goals conceded, count the number of clean sheets we have had, and then point out where we are weak at the back and need to make a change.

Dunk and Upson at home - but Greer and Upson away from home. The reason for my thinking is that Greer is far more negative than Dunk at home - preferring to pass sideways and backwards a lot of the time -and his forward passes are often telegraphed "suicide" passes. He sometimes makes appallingly inaccurate passes partly i think due to his slowness. Whereas away from home he is good at sitting back and reading the play.
Dunk is far more positive at home - and gives the team much more purposeful forward impetus.

Dunk is the future and is still learning. He won't just walk back into the first team and is cover for now. As with any talented reserve, lack of playing time can run the risk of impatience and frustration. His year in the wilderness and the threat of worse has hopefully taught him to appreciate the privileged position he is in. Greer is better than most on here think and is less likely err in times of pressure. He is club Captain and won't be moved as easily as some think.
Upson is surely thereabouts for player of the year, along with our other 'centre back' Incey wincey spider, so he is unlikely to be unseated.

Really looking forward to Saturday. Bolton was a bonus and should install some further confidence into our side that is every bit as good as last season, if not better. There are a few trips and falls to come but after the fall out from Gus's departure, a play off place will be a real achievement. And if the dream is realised, wouldn't it be ironic if Sunderland came the other way and of course a complete pleasure if the Croydon massif joined them. Anyway i wished for Palarse in the play offs last year and that didn't get me very far. So as OG would say, one game at a time. And as Nathan Jones would say 'cause winter's passed, spring and fall, you never wrote me, you never called...

So good to see an explanation of thinking rather than a hit and run comment, even if I don't fully agree. The picture you paint Vince is of a player that is a risk when playing at home, in fact from what you say he should never start a home game, but does not the record of our back five counter most of what you are saying. Yes Greer is half a yard too slow but his experience helps make up for that shortage. Wayward passes, at times yes, and from the few matches I have seen online there are others that also complete wayward passes, Bruno for one, don't all players get it wrong on now and then.
I am up for having more pace at the back, I have banged on about that fact for a while now, but for me that is a next year issue. The good, the bad and the ugly of Greer's performances are a matter of record, but so are our results, at home and away, so I think Greer keeps his place, this year, based on results.

Well thought through and clearly a popular suggestion Vince, but unnecessary rotation in my book. Nothing beats a settled back five.

Dunk and Upson would start for me, Dunk still plenty to learn yes, but has shown enough in a lot of peoples eyes to keep his place, Greer is at that age where every game takes its toll on him, hence his poor performance after his international match. I would go with Vince on this one, youth and forward vision at home (along side Upsons experience) and go with Greer away for the parking of the bus.
Upson, while being up there age wise with Greer has not had such a hard life and is in better shape imo and can still manage back to back games.

It's a difficult one, but for me keep GG and MU with LD as backup.
That's harsh on LD because he deserves a place but I'm sure he'll get some playing time.
Depending on the situation perhaps use all three with LD coming on for the last 20-30 minutes. This might then keep our more experienced defenders fresh for what is going to be a hard run in.
Whatever Oscar decides that's OK with me. UTA

Om one or two points that you raise I agree with you, Greer going abroad to represent his country and then turning out for us might have not been the best move, perhaps Dunk could have stepped in. Greer will not be asked to play for Scotland in the coming weeks so that issue will not arise.
Dunk has shown enough to start matches, I won't disagree with that but has Greer done so little to deserve being replaced at this time, regular visitors to the Amex and away games will have to answer that one.
Upson seems to be doing a Giggs, age just isn't an issue right now, playing Dunk along side Upson would benefit Dunk but, there are matches coming up against teams that are not in the mix for a top six spot that he could start in, All the time we have potential six pointers, I would rather we stayed with a settled back five.
Dunk is a star of tomorrow, of that I have no doubt, and at his age, he can wait a few months for his chance of a regular spot. If we keep Greer for one more season, I can see the roles reversed, Dunk the starter and Greer the cover and cup match CB.

The Greer and Upson partnership have given us the most clean sheets in the Division so far. As much as I really rate Lewis Dunk I would definitely go with the 'if it's not broke - don't try and fix it philosophy'.

I believe that one of the reasons that Burnley have been such a surprise package this season is that Sean Dyche has been able to field an almost identical side week in week out. I know he has had less choices than many so called bigger clubs and I think that has proved a blessing in disguise!

I sometimes wonder how much more successful we would be if we were able, and willing, to do the same!

Dunk, Upson , Bruno and Ward for me -- but Saturday against Bolton the line-up with Greer pretty much cancelled out most of the second half efforts Bolton had apart from a few saves Thomas had to make and a heart stopping free kick off the crossbar. Either way - I know everyone goes endlessly on about strikers - but Albion should absolutely NAIL down the back 5/6 as priority number one for next season because they simply are the best in the division! Poachers will come calling for them - guaranteed! You don't achieve stats like they have and not have other clubs take a keen note. Who would have thought that anyone could have replaced Bridgey? Superb team effort! Contracts NOW - the strikers will take care of themselves from now on!

As well as being a physically stronger defender & more positive in possession, Dunk's extra pace should allow us to defend a little higher up the pitch allowing our midfield to be closer to Ulloa.
Too many times the midfield get sucked in protecting a back 4 who defend too deep & when we get the ball forward to Ulloa, the closest player is at least 20 yards away from him.

Excellent thread and inputs from Albion fans. I think that recent games have shown that Dunk can step up to the mark and this augurs well for the short and long term of the team. However, our real strength this season has been our defence, evidenced by so few goals conceded. The club captain has without doubt in my view, been a key component of the defence and continues to justify his inclusion in the team. If Dunk continues to perform as he is currently, then it will not be to long before he is a regular starter, but currently I'd be surprised if Oscar doesn't stick with the two who have mostly been excellent this season. The great thing is, both Greer and Upson know that they have to keep performing with Dunk ready to jump in. Long may it last.

I'm happy to go with any combination that OG sees fit. I'm just grateful that we have three such solid centre backs to select from.

Most teams are built on a sound defence ... and that's certainly been the case with the Albion this season.

How lucky we were to find such an outstanding replacement for Wayne Bridge as Stephen Ward. I just hope that, unlike Bridge, we are able to get him back for next season.

And that's the best point yet. Having someone as capable as Dunk to step in will keep the incumbents on their toes.

And Bruce Beckett - a very good point about Ward. Considering Bridge's injuries this season we've probably upgraded.

Greer and Upson , that said Dunk a couple of good games and man in possession . Not that OG has played this with our centre backs as Adam El Abd found out having done nothing wrong and as soon as Greer was fit found himself back on the bench.

I came on here saturday to celebrate with you lot about a great win but unfortunately the site had been taken over by a troll and people willing to feed it. Tonight a great chat which has changed my mind. I voted for Upson and Dunk but now I am tending towards Greer and Upson after reading your well written posts. I particularly agree with Dunk upping Greer and Upsons game by being so good. Thank you all.

Greer and Upson for me , in fact play the best back five in the championship, it's mainly them that has given us that excellent defensive record.
Mr Dunk is a wonderful replacement if required, through injury , or if we could give GG or MU a rest coz we are 2 or 3 up !
Results were good for us 2 nite, so I am getting very optimistic about our play off chances

Shall I (a) point out the irony in the comment from the Bosch, (b) explain again about the numbers of posters and fans, or (c) just get the troll banned again.

Bosch/Freeloaders: YOU are the problem on this site. You know this. You have been banned a dozen times yet you keep coming back with random (and extremely juvenile) insults. Why? What are you gaining? You keep claiming this is a football discussion site, yet you contribute literally nothing about the game itself.

You insult every single person on here, you seem to have a pathological fear/hatred of one of Brighton's players and you can't even be consistent with the stuff you make up. You seem to genuinely think that if more than one person disagrees with you then they are in fact the same person. Just about EVERYONE on here disagrees with you, because you are rude, aggressive and extremely opinionated.

You are like the pub bore that everyone tries to ignore, and then when you realise what's happening you run up to them and shout in their faces. Then you try to pretend that actually you are not just one person and there are in fact many of you (disproved by the fact you're only on here in one guise at a time). This is sociopathic behaviour.

You need to get help, not because you are weak, but because this is not normal behaviour for an adult.

If what you sat is correct about the number of those that post, then why don't you add to the number by commenting on our past results and future promotion prospects, rather then slagging off those that do this. Why don't you just offer a reasonable comment on Dunk rather than go way over the top with what looks like pure hatred of the lad.
It seems to me that you are more concerned about saying how useless we are with our comments, but in doing so you add nothing of value to any debate.
I have never seen you offer a comment that relates to our opposition and how we might beat them. I have never seen you offer a comment as to how the subs might be used, or what you think of Stephens, JFC, Solly or Oscar. What I have seen are constant insulting attacks on just one lad, do you honestly think that you are adding to the value of this forum, will your insults persuade more people to join this site?

What and you do lol.The other day you spent all afternoon just talking with each other about painting your house man. Can't you see how sad that makes the 2 of you look.Vegas who ever you are this site is down to just about 15 different accounts now.Even you must be able to work out this Ex-pat the Old Scrote of the Amex from Worthing once semi-pro footballer has about 7 or more different accounts. This site really is his life, and his taken it to a all time low.You just think about all the great posters that have come and gone on this site because of that guy.Don't you see it got to the point it was just you and him.Even you must admit that is sad my friend.
I note that you are also prone to exagerate the truth, I mentioned painting my house once, and if my recall is right, 2 quick comments from others occured that were related, you can check if you want.
Vegas thats not the point my friend. The point is mosts storys now get just about 20 post from the same 12 or 14 user names. That my friend is very sad from a club with over 30k fans you must be able to see. This guy Ex-pat or the Old Scrote of the Amex has killed this site all by himself.
What pure rubbish i was talking about March b4 any of you.Like i pointed out there are 7 prem-league clubs already watching him.I first posted this after the Reading game at the Amex in the FA,CUP. Also many posts about JFK. Yet again you post more pure rubbish.

and how many of your coments of yesterday were of the same type as your comments on Solly. The problem is, we forget anything decent that you write because it gets lost in the personal attack comments, no matter who they are directed at. If you don't like Dunk don't write about him, write about those you do like and why.
You don't get to have it both ways, you can't slag me or others off for making a, 'non football,' comment, when your personal attacks on Dunk are constantly over the top and not considered by most as, 'football,' related but are seen as personal hatred.

I (SINCERELY) concur. The man is REALLY worrying me now.

I don't hate Lewis Dunk you silly man lol. Hate is a very strong word to start with.I just hate the fact he let the club and the fans down of which i've been a fan over 38 years. To be honest he let himself down and his family, and b4 you start thats why like Natan Jones said we had the chat. You hate me because you wish to run this site with your one sided views.
