Albion defence the best as play-off rivals falter

The Argus: Oscar Garcia's Albion have the meanest record in the Championship Oscar Garcia's Albion have the meanest record in the Championship

Albion head into Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town with the best defence in the Championship.

The Seagulls and Queens Park Rangers had conceded 28 goals apiece before ten-men Rangers' 3-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday tonight.

Harry Redknapp's side, beaten 2-0 at the Amex last Tuesday, fell behind Albion in the mean league when Richard Dunne was sent-off at Hillsborough conceding a first half penalty which Wednesday converted.

Leon Best and Lewis Buxton scored further goals for the Yorkshiremen after the break.

Rangers remain seven points clear of Albion but have now played a game more.

Albion go to Hillsborough next Tuesday.

The Seagulls' challenge for the play-offs received a further boost as Wigan were held 3-3 at home by Yeovil in their game in hand. They are only three points clear of Oscar Garcia's side.

Charlton, visitors to the Amex on April 12, snatched a late winner at home to Bournemouth to ease their relegation worries.

Not own trumpet blowing, so no need to have a dig.

Two or three weeks ago I suggested that QPR were no certain to make the playoffs, and today I think that still holds true. The top 3 for me are in, no problem. I think we can make it along with Wigan, just one place left. If QPR continue to drop valuable points and Forest have not been at their best, Reading could make the top 6 and both of the others could lose out. Ok, i'll admit that QPR do look good for a playoff place but did anyone expect them to lose so badly today, or even lose. I think the players nerves, not to mention Arry and his board, are starting to jangle a bit. Forest have a tough match coming up on saturday and QPR shouldn't have a walk in the park against Boro, in fact on current form I would say they would be happy with a point. There is still time for Arry to get fired, get someone else in to try and push them over the line. Love their new shirt deal, 40 millions worth, I wonder if a promotion clause applies.

The best defence in the Championship.
Trouble is that we need to score more goals, our difference is below those above us albeit only 3 goals but those goals could be a make or break for a play off place, hopefully we will not need to worry about GD.
Having the best defence in the Championship does not win games, it helps yes but goals win games.

I'm not so sure, I agree they are going through a massive slump at the moment but, having seen then play at the Amex, even though we beat them 2 nil I still thought they were a class side who could be very dangerous in the play offs. I would rather play Teading or Wigan.

Difficult one with QPR - we definitely want to avoid them in the play-offs so I'm not sure whether I wanted them to win last night so they still have a chance of catching Burnley, or lose so they have a chance of missing out altogether. I think Wigan's recent form has been flattering to them, and with their hectic run-in I doubt they'll catch Burnley anyway, so I was quite happy to see them drop points.

Any teams around us dropping points is a bonus. We just have to ensure we win our games and dont do the same as the others. Having the meanest defence helps, but having a potent attacking edge is also required to get the goals that win matches. Twelve 0 v 0 draws would be a great defensive achievement but would not get us in to the play-offs.
So I'm looking forward to Leo, WB and JL finding the back of the net a few times on Sat. Then I'll feel more optimistic.
I wasn't too surprised at QPR's result last night. As I posted a couple of months back, I laid them against getting promotion , so I hope their demise continues. Will be interesting to see how we do at Shef Wed next week.
For me Wigan are the strongest team outside of the top three.

It's all down now to the players staying level headed and keeping their focus on the single game as it approaches. We know that they are looking at the table and the fixtures to come, how could they not, but the, 'one game at a time,' approach is the right one.

Keeping a clean sheet is a priority placed even above scoring more goals. Win 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2 we only add one to our goal difference, and when you concede a goal there is a chance you can be beaten, a clean sheet takes the possibility of losing off the table.
With Ulloa, Lingard and Buckley on the park we have three guys who can score or at least pose a strong threat, that will keep the opposition honest. Stephens and JFC pose a secondary threat. A single goal from any of these players plus a clean sheet is 3 points, and points win prizes,

Wednesday and Boro still to play and neither one is looking for the top six place and both look safe form relegation. I would expect both of them to come at us, our scalp would be a trophy for them.
Blackburn might still think that they have a chance of seneaking into the top six, they will want a win. Barnsley, relegation fodder and that makes them dangerous, and even if we write them off and consider them relegated, they will play for their pride.
Leicester will just want to keep winning and for them to beat any of the top six contenders, will be just more validation of the quality of their squad, and they will want that as they enter the top level.
Charlton, a team in a dog fight to stay up, nothing easy about playing them.
Huddersfield, another team looking safe and with nothing to prove, another scalp hunting team.
Blackpool, might need the points to stay clear of the drop, they will battle and Yeovil will be desperate for points and if they are relegated before we play them, pride is all they will have left to play for, and that can be very potent.
Forest, by the time we play them the circumstances for some will be known, maybe even us, but this match would be a hard one to win no matter what the circumstances.

A top six place for us is going to require a few more clean sheets, as all these remaining matches will have something on them, on them in a way that they didn't have when we met earlier in the year. When getting a win for us is so vital, and also vital for those we have to play, 1-0 will do for me.

VegasSeagull

Another poster that has been accused of being me, brightonup, Scrote, albionfan33 etc etc etc. And wasn't it the mighty Hovite who offered to meet Freeloaders, only for the latter to bottle it yet bring it up every 5 minutes? Still, not much more ignoring of him to do until he's banned again.

Anyway, I'm comfortable with whomever OG chooses as his centre back pairing, but if I was a betting man I'd put cash on GG/MU. A rare nice problem for our head-coach to have :-)

Regarding last night's results - they certainly were encouraging for us.

As has been pointed out on another thread, the playoffs are within in our grasp. Ipswich's chances of a top six place are slim, but you can be sure that will be looking to get a win on Saturday - they have nothing to lose.....

No doubt we are the better side, but we will still need to maintain composure and show spirit if we are to win.
