Late strike makes it more Hillsborough misery

Leon Best's shot beats Tomasz Kuszczak

The fans who made the long trip north

Albion suffered late heartbreak at their hoodoo ground tonight – in a game they could have won.

The Seagulls were sent to a harsh 1-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday, a club they have never beaten in the steel city.

Leon Best scored the winner in the 90th minute as a poor touch by Bruno midway inside his own half gave them chance to counter.

It was cruel on the visitors.

Albion, with Leo Ulloa, absent through illness, kept the ball on the deck in attack.

But they almost scored with an effort of which the Argentinean would have approved as David Rodriguez headed a Forster-Caskey corner against the bar on 15 minutes.

Neat approach play by Jake Forster-Caskey sent Will Buckley clean through after the break.

But Chris Kirkland stayed on his feet long enough to deflect the Albion man’s effort behind.

Tomasz Kuszczak was a spectator – until he stood strong to block a volley from the clean-through Benik Afobe.

But he could do nothing when Best clinically rolled the winner between his outstretched grasp and the far post.

The report is the same every game, we pass the ball nicely and have excellent possession however how can we be serious contenders when we don't take teams apart... Less than 50 goals this season.. Poor at home and we could be in the play offs... I have to say standard this season is lower than last year in championship.

Played reasonably well again but without scoring. Of course it had to be Bruno who had the poor touch, he can be brilliant but always liable to make a mistake and give away a goal.
Fortunately other results went our way so we need to start scoring....now!

No goals on Saturday, no goals tonight, a grand total of 39 goals in 37 matches. We don't have a single striker worthy of the name I'm afraid. We've brought in a 5th rate Spanish player who makes Chris Holroyd look great and a so-called 'Manchester United whizz-kid' who still hasn't scored a goal for us. Ulloa is our leading scorer (not that there is much competition) but the number of sitters he's missed is extremely high. We are now down to 9th and probably need 20 points from our remaining 9 matches (including Leicester away) to be sure of getting into the play-offs. Hardly likely when we can't score a single goal against Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday is it?

We won't score 50 goals this season, we don't deserve a play off spot! Watch man city, watch Leicester , they go for it! Yes they come unstuck , but they play to score! OG stated he was going to play attacking football!
The sale of Barnes showed our intent this year, the injury to crofts can't be helped, but to sell our only other goal scorer when we struggled to find the net is hard to take..
I bet kemy is on more than Barnes ever was? What a signing on a two year deal! In the casino in the afternoons in the marina ..... Shambles .

So ABSOLUTELY predictable. Very frustrating it feels like nothing changes, same old same old, was just waiting for us to miss chance after chance and Bruno to make ANOTHER error (don't bother telling me he has flashes of decent play). I've renewed my season ticket but it has to be said the Albion are lucky so many of us have because this is just boring. The Spanish boys are simply not up to it, too inconsistent and Rodriguez, well my goodness...

Why all the hype about getting into the play-offs?

We are unlikely to beat QPR over 2 legs - and if that's not hard enough we would have to beat Wigan (probably) in the final. We simply do not have a clue about scoring goals even if we do have 60-70% possession.

So it will be Championship football again next year - play-offs or no play-offs!

We definitely need another striker who KNOWS how to put the ball in the net. Whether CMS and/or Hoskins will be on fire next season remains to be seen.
There are plenty of guys in the lower divisions who know where the net is. I'm sure we can get someone suitable. Eddie Howe knows what he is doing and Bournemouth have been scoring hatfuls recently with a far inferior team to Albion's. After all when he was at Burnley he signed Danny Ings. I bet he wishes he had left him at Bournemouth now he is their manager! Sean Dyche knows the English game inside out - and is a winner. No surprise then that he likes 2 strikers working for and off each other. When we had Vokes he was on his own up front and ineffective. With Ings he is dynamic. Funny that Burnley have let in as few goals as us - but have scored twice as many!!!

When will Oscar learn something GOOD about the English game? The one classic omission from his locker - is that 2 strikers who combine well are the key to scoring lots of goals. Getting bodies into the penalty area is also a must. Good service from midfield and the wings is also essential. A very high proportion of our crosses from the wings have failed to find an Albion forward in the box.
Our free kick routines against Ipswich were pathetic. The balls from free kicks tend to be floated into the box rather than delivered at pace. There is no creativity in midfield. Agustien is the only one I have seen who is creative -but how many times has he played?
We have a whole raft of very talented players like Ulloa, Buckley, Ince, Bruno, Upson, Dunk who could all quite easily play in the Premiership.
If we don't add a quality creative midfield player, a quality striker and a winger who can cross the ball like Conway (why on earth did we let him go to Blackburn?????) our star players will leave and the whole impetus we have achieved will be lost.

IMHO We need to act soon and decisively or the consequences for the club COULD be disastrous - with a big drop in season ticket sales, loss of our star players - and a smaller budget to get the quality players required for a big push to the Premiership..
