Crawley sign Swansea winger on loan

The Argus: Gwion Edwards Gwion Edwards

Crawley Town have signed winger Gwion Edwards on a month's loan from Premier League side Swansea City.

The Wales Under-21 international is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to Preston if he receives international clearance in time.

Edwards has not made a first team appearance for Swansea but played 24 games during two loan spells at St Johnstone in the Scottish Premier League, including 17 appearances this season.

Boss John Gregory moved to bring in the 21-year-old to give his side the width they have been missing since the departure of Nicky Adams to Rotherham in January.

Gregory said: “We have been looking at Gwion for a while and we’re delighted Swansea have let him come to us.

“I have felt in recent weeks that we have lacked natural width in midfield and this boy will give us that. He has tremendous ability and a bright future ahead of him and this is another stage in his development.

“I’d like to thank Gary Monk at Swansea for letting us take him and I really think he can have a big impact for us in the remainder of the season.”

Edwards is the third player to join Crawley from Swansea in the last two seasons after the arrivals of Jamie Proctor and Joe Walsh.

He has not played since ending his temporary stay at St Johnstone in January and is looking forward to tasting action as Reds face nine games in the month Edwards will be at the club. Edwards said: “I know a few of the lads here like Joe Walsh from the Wales Under-21s and Rory Fallon, who I played with at St Johnstone, so that helps.

“I’m really looking forward to getting some games under my belt in League One and showing the manager and the Crawley fans what I can do.”
