Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith is closing in on a Championship comeback.

The Scotland international could be part of the 18 to face battling Barnsley tomorrow if he has no ill effects from his run out for the development squad on Monday.

Mackail-Smith scored twice against Charlton’s under-21s but the fact he played the full 90 minutes was even more significant for Oscar Garcia.

Albion’s head coach will assess his squad this morning and consider a call into the 18 for the striker who has not featured since rupturing his Achilles 14 months ago.

Will Buckley (hamstring) and Andrea Orlandi (thigh) are again absent as the Seagulls visit a Barnsley side looking to leave the drop zone for the first time in almost seven months.

Rohan Ince will be further assessed after taking a heavy blow to the knee in the 3-3 draw at Blackburn on Tuesday.

Oscar has called for an end to the blunders which have blemished his side’s impressive defensive record in the last three games.

He said: “We have not been getting it wrong tactically.

“The last few goals have included a lot of individual mistakes and these are more difficult to control.”
