Rodriguez: Boss showed faith

David Rodriguez has revealed how his boss assured him he had a part to play in the race for the top six.

Even when he was struggling for a goal and playing time.

The former Celta striker got off the mark in English football when he fired the Seagulls ahead at Blackburn on Tuesday.

He hopes it is the first of a few before his current deal expires at the end of the season.

Rodriguez - in contention for more action at Barnsley today - was brought in on a short-term basis.

But, he says, that does not mean head coach Oscar Garcia was lacking patience with him.

Rodriguez revealed: "The coach spoke to me and just said he understood the adaption from Spain is difficult.

"But it always helps the settling-in process as a striker if you can get a goal.

"There were games in which I didn't even participate.

"But even then Oscar told me not to worry, that my time would come, that he had confidence in me and that sooner or later I would help the team.

"Now I've scored my first goal I want more."

Rodriguez hit the bar with a header and generally looked quite bright the previous Tuesday at Sheffield Wednesday.

But was left on the bench on Saturday against Middlesbrough and his frustration was clear when the third substitution was made, meaning he would get on.

Former Newcastle defender Marcelino, who speaks excellent English and helps Rodriguez and his agent with off-field business in this country, was among the crowd at the Amex that day.

The striker added: "Everybody wants to play, especially at home.

"But I've always kept working and I feel I have some reward.

"I spoke a little with Marcelino and he said the same - to keep working and to keep believing.

"I've always scored goals at all the clubs I've played for."

Hi Tug, it has to be touch and go whether or not Rodders get's a contract for next season, but even if he doesn't, as a free agent he might get a chance with a club that comes up from Div 1. He still ha a few games to impress, and scoring today might keep him on the team sheet for the next one.
